I agree that the Murmur has been a great thing for art, artists and Oakland. It brings tons of people to the area and supports restaurants, stores, as well as galleries. People who are complaining about it sound like a bunch of kids complaining that it's not just them and their friends. Cool people sometimes put their kids in strollers, y'know.
This is exciting. with the cool galleries near here like Mercury 20 and Front right across Broadway, this could really help bring up this great corner of Uptown. Once Bakesale Betty's and the new coffeehouse open, this corner of Oaktown will be swingin'. Now we just need live jazz....
Well, I need to revise my comment. BTW, I wasn't blaming them because I left my card there. I blamed them for then losing it and not responding when I called and came in. However, since I left this comment, the management contacted me and is sending me a new giftcard. I am really pleased, because i did enjoy the food, drinks and atmosphere there on my visit. Now I feel i can happily return and begin again with Mua. As a 14 year restaurant worker, I am really aware of the importance of customer service. Mua just started over with me. Good job!
I agree the place seems a mess. I left a $100.00 giftcard there by accident, (because the machine wouldn't process it). When I called, it was there, and they said they would keep it for me. When I showed up three days later to get it (I live in Martinez), no one could find it. When I called twice to speak to a manager, he or she was never there. I would have hoped they would at least give me a free meal or something, but no one ever called or took any furhter responsibility. Leaves a very bad taste in my mouth!
Wow! I found this exhibit to be completely overstuffed, and in desperate need of editing. I would also say the same about Black's paintings, as well. I really appreciated Linda Race's pieces, but they were, unfortunately, swamped by the exhibit. I think I liked Crippen's photos, but hanging them 15 to a wall did them no favors. Edit, edit, edit needs to be the mantra for the curator of this show.
Fantastic show! Van Duren's small dress castings are haunting, and I loved the book cover assemblages. There is some beautiful work in the back gallery, too.
Re: “Mercury 20 Gallery”
Such a great space! Big improvement over their Grand St. space, and the work continues to be some of the most interesting art at the Murmur. A must see venue.
