Re: “Woodfin Manager Says Eviction Warranted

It's hard to read the immature shrill comments about this eviction. What galaxy do you live two live in? Activism is one thing. But as a guest in the hotel "Acting" against the hotel? No. Sorry. Unacceptable. That's not how adults behave and I can't imagine you hold a job with that sort of thinking. For the sake of your daughter, please grow up and stop setting a bizarre example. If you keep acting like a teenage, how is she supposed to learn how to act and get around in the world If you were true to yourself and your values you would have left the hotel long ago. But hey, someone else is footing the bill right? Hypocrisy 101. What does Republicanism (if there is such a thing) have to do with this? This is about rules and breaking them and you really blew it. Here's a non-Republican, run-of-the-mill fellow citizen advising you to end the verbal diareah. Its only adding to the distasteful mutual masturbation all you cranks are performing in front of the rest of us who are simply trying to live our lives in Emeryville...a beautiful, low-crime, thriving, new city.....there are two neighboring cities--Berkeley and Oakland that are seedy, crime-ridden and disorganized and sure could use some loud mouths to get their leaders moving. So why not try there?

Re: “Emeryville City Council Meeting Hot, Hot, Hot

Wouldn't it be interesting if the Woodfin federal case ended up before the Supreme Court in DC. I am a liberal by birthright (I am a gay man from Massachusetts) and ordinarily despise Anton Scalia and his right wing on the court, but the Emeryville City Council is getting a little big for its britches--acting like spoiled teenagers flouting federal law. A civics lesson would not doubt be in store by the esteemed justices. Social Security fraud is illegal – lets hear the voices of those legal citizens whose numbers are used by undocumented workers. Where’s the back-story of the nightmare involved with having some one using your social security number? If the IRS and the INS and Homeland Security get their act together, they will find a lot of work in Emeryville with this issue. Who knows it may be in the wings. The feds work slow, and need to cut through red tape and bureaucracy…. they may be watching, listening and waiting. And then after the fines, jail-time, and deportations, and truly sad family tragedies, the activists will blame the Woodfin, when it was they who attracted media attention to the social security violations in Emeryville; they will have done the IRS’s bidding. How hard these people worked is not of primary concern to the law. Illegal, undocumented workers are not afforded rights under Measure C or any other city, state or federal law, no matter how you twist the facts, no matter how many robed Franciscans, Berkeley City Council Members, little children and elderly hippies you parade up and down Shellmound Street. This national issue is not going to end well for illegal workers until congress of Bush get serious about recognizing the work these people do and affording them some sort of loophole to work legally; amnesty anyone? The people you need to confront are Bush’s politicos who are persuading him to build fences and walls instead of getting creative and realistic. The culprits are not small hotel chains who are beginning to buckle under and apply employment law. As for the woman evicted from the Woodfin. Organizing hotel employees in her hotel suite, while staying as a guest, at no financial cost to herself is absolutely grounds for eviction. The fact that she remains in the hotel as a guest while such a vocal critic is disingenuous and the fact that she is whining in public should embarrass her. Authentic liberal voices who can speak reason to this mater, who care for immigrants of all kinds and who want to see them succeed as our forebears did, legally, are drowned out by the shrill chants of the fringe whose primary reason for being, it seems, is to stir up messes, whether their issues are based in solid investigation or not.
