Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
Our neighbors in Alameda watched a man watched a man die due to union interference against common decency. Then a union boss with the UFCW called criticism of that interference “disgusting”. How long before the union curse hits Oakland? If these unions don’t bankrupt us, they’ll kill us.
Phony lawsuits, worker intimidation and pressure from the union-bought politicians was no match for the workers' free will. Again. Poor Big Mike. Maybe now the Safeway workers are motivated to also take the decertification route to better wages and benefits, without forking over Local 5 payola each month.
Take heart Big Mike, you are still the #1 "union scam" on the GOOGLE.
Don't be so paranoid, BigMike! No one games Google and Search Engine Optimization is another useless scam that you probably waste dues $ on.
No, I smelled a rat, as anyone here can and tried generic terms. But I do stand corrected, it was over 9 MILLION results that you topped. I guess you just can't stop fingerpointing, like a pickpocket using misdirection.
Speaking of what's publicly available, how's your raid of the Local 5 Strike Fund coming along? http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2010/02/2…
Local 5 is a non-presence at Wal-Mart, Trader Joes and Whole Foods. Too hard? Let's take a look at Local 5's 2009 DOL LM-2: $14 million in dues, $228,000 in political activities, $159,000 in loans, $1,718,494 to officers, $4,470,106 to employees, strike fund = $0.00 etc.
The Bowl workers now stand with Valley View Farms, Pinheiro Dairy and Milanesio Farms, Esteves Dairy and Neldam's Bakery in finding Local 5 to be, well, not a good investment in their future.
Everyone should fact check, BigMike! When I google "union scam" without quotes, I get over 920,000 results in 0.25 seconds and guess who is #1?
Out of all the thousands of unions, in all the world, your Local 5 campaigns have put you at the #1 union scam. Congrats and quit the whining. Blaming others is so 1950's. Go ask the Delano grocery Local 5 brothers and sisters that lost their jobs in this poor economy just what BigMike did for them. Oh my, he spent their last dollars on legal fees fighting ANOTHER decertification, not saving jobs.
Reeling from Local 5's stunning loss by decertification, primarily due to lack of performance by the union stewards, Henneberry has spent tens of thousands more of workers $$$ (dues) in legal costs trying to force what they could not earn. This UFCW doesn't respect the worker's voice or vote. It simply (and desperately) needs more workers forced to pay more dues in these tough times. Those free cars and paid trips to Japan don't come cheap unless you are on the inside management "team" of Local 5. Gotta save that Golden Goose for the separate (but not equal) Executive Board health care plan (again, paid for by worker's dues).
Sorry, have to correct your story on 2 facts.
Jean Quan was instrumental in trying to put Farmer Joe's OUT OF BUSINESS unless the owners signed away the workers right to a secret ballot vote. The workers prevailed when the UFCW union admitted that that they were never asked to represent the workers and that the Quan backed attack on workers rights was an attempt to get enrollment fees and dues, not provide representation. The Berkeley Bowl recently decertified the same union, principally for lack of performance.
As to the Hillcrest Motel, Dimond heroes Marcel DeGross and attorney Leila Moncharsh made that renovation possible, not Jean Quan.
Jean Quan has just a much special interest baggage as anyone in this race and Oaklanders know it. Robert Gammon should be able to communicate that but has mislead the readers here.
The $700 donation to Rebecca Kaplan by the Instituto Laboral de la Raza Treasurer Dan Rush must be raising some eyebrows. Doing double duty as the UFCW Local 5 chief enforcer has elicited this enlightened comment by a newly compromised Oaksterdam University employee:
"Actually, we employees of Oaksterdam University were railroaded into signing our Union cards; and threatened with dismissal if we didn't join the Union. We never asked for their support, and were pressured by management into joining Local #5. Dan Rush is a common scum bag. June 18, 2010"
some endorsement. wonder where he took the $700 from?
