This airy, high-ceilinged campus hangout offers coffees, teas, Italian sodas, pastries and sandwiches — and, perhaps more important, plenty of outlets.
The birthplace of the caffe latte and a meeting place for everyone from academics to artist types, Caffe Med serves up a satiating mix of coffee drinks, teas, breakfast fare, sandwiches, and more.
Whether you're looking to socialize, study, or people-watch, Caffe Strada provides the venue (including a large outdoor patio) and the location (directly across the street from campus) to do it. Its cafe mochas aren't bad, either.
Kip's used to be campus' most unabashedly skeezy bar, complete with neon-colored liquor, auspiciously sticky floors, and unfathomably cheap pitchers. Now, it's cleaned itself up a little and sells such delicacies as salads and imported beer along with those aforementioned $7.50 pitchers of PBR. We'll leave it up to you to decide whether this is an improvement. Either way: KARAOKE!
French for “The Drunken Boat,” Le Bateau Ivre is a restaurant and coffeehouse located just a few blocks from the UC Berkeley campus. With its brick interior and garden patio, Le Bateau Ivre takes you back to 19th-century France. Live music happens every Wednesday night.
This fancy cafe and classical music store, located across the street from UC Berkeley's Sproul Plaza, is one of the few venues in downtown Berkeley where you can eat scones and sip lattes while listening to live chamber music or cabaret.
Your classic, competent campus sports bar, Pappy's (formerly Blakes on Telegraph) is home to approximately one million television screens; lots of football fans; a more ambitious food menu than you'd typically find at a campus-area sports bar; and, it should be noted, a very cheap happy hour.
Aside from a wide selection of coffee and tea (and Mexican hot chocolate!), the cafe has vast breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. The bagels are a must-try, and the open-faced options are mostly named for local cities. What's on the Berkeley bagel, you might ask? You'll have to see for yourself.
This boba tea house is located just south of the UC Berkeley campus. It offers many different kinds of teas and boba milk, along with various flavored iced drinks. It is also open late-night.
