Recreation & Outdoors: Gyms & Health Clubs

24 Hour Fitness offers a wide range of work out equipment and instruction open 24 hours a day.

Combining strength, cardio, and aerobic elements in a streamlined thirty-minute circuit-training workout that starts with a warm-up and ends with a cool-down, the Curves plan is designed with women's bodies in mind.

Offers serious workouts for the seriously committed, with a focus on bodybuilding. The facility has cardio and strength equipment, including free weights and Nautilus and Cybex machines. Also has a sauna, personal trainers, nutritional counselors, massage therapists, smoothies, and a boxing room.

Offers community programs for children and adults to build partnerships through sports and physical health.

Offers boxing, calisthenics, martial arts, running, and nutrition; partners with schools and CBOs to offer off-site boxing programs; and facilitates and organizes all-female self-defense classes and workshops.

Unapologetically old-school and Rocky-esque, this is an Oakland staple — presided over by Charles King, who has trained at least two state champions and many other pros since he started this line of work in 1984. Facilities include one boxing ring, several speed bags, and various weight machines. No childcare is available.
