Established in 1873, the Clayton Club Saloon truly echoes its Old West heritage with beat-up cowboy boots dangling from the ceiling, wood-plank floors, and patrons who look as if they’ve been bellying up to the bar just as long. The Harley-Davidson-clad customers at this establishment don’t wait for nightfall to start partying; they’re smoking cigarettes on the dirt patio out back, playing pool, or listening to some of the rock ’n’ roll bands playing in the back of the bar. For this small community of about 11,000, the saloon is one of the few, if only, nighttime entertainment options in the quaint, rustic “downtown.” And that’s just as well, since this secluded town at the end of Ygnacio Valley Road doesn’t have its own gas station.

One of six independently owned Panama Red Coffee Co. houses in the Bay Area, the Concord site faces Todo Santos Park, where people in the community gather for the farmers' market, live music, picnics, and play. The cafe also plays an active role in fostering community, showing the work of local artists and hosting acoustic open mic night on Saturdays starting at 7 p.m. Relaxed servers are more than accommodating, going so far as to attend customers’ musical performances. Two patios, many windows, and a large main room give the space an open-air feeling, though you can also cozy up in one of several oversize chairs. Servers and customers alike are jazzed about “the conos,” individually ground and cone-dripped coffee servings. Many organic and Fair Trade selections, supplied by Tony’s Coffee and Teas. Also an excellent selection of smoothies, frozen coffee drinks, and fresh baked goods. Free wi-fi.

Karaoke at 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Sunday. DJs spin on "Gorilla Thursdays." Local bands play a wide variety of rock-oriented music on Friday and Saturday, cover usually under $10 (most shows $6). Large beer garden. Two pool tables, five TVs, jukebox, dance floor, and stage.
