Bars, Clubs & Coffeehouses: Coffeehouses

The mellow cafe recently opened on Piedmont Avenue and is already gaining a following for its chai tea, fruit- and vegetable-based smoothies, and its outdoor patio.

Seize the day at this small Dimond District coffee shop, where the iced drinks come reinforced with coffee ice cubes and the wi-fi is free.

Cute neighborhood coffee joint next door to the Grand Lake theater with Dia de Los Muertos-themed decor and a menu serving hot dogs and sandwiches in addition to typical coffee shop fare like pastries, drip coffee, and espresso drinks. This isn't a get-in, get-out morning pit-stop kind of place, but rather one that invites and encourages patrons to stay awhile. Don't miss Smokey, the beloved and knowledgeable proprietor.

"Community in a cup" is the mantra at Farley's, a cozy coffee hub with a local art gallery and a plethora of magazines awaiting your bleary-eyed perusal. The food menu includes plenty of classy salads — pine nuts, arugula and goat cheese are just a few of the ingredients — and paninis both hot and cold. There's even a store with beans and Farley's T-shirts. Free wi-fi.

The many tables set up throughout the late-night coffee shop attract regular crowds of laptop-using coffee drinkers, and the resulting people-watching opportunities are arguably almost as good as the coffee.

A cute little cafe that's just spacious enough to afford some seating indoors and out front. The cafe's name denotes an effort to combat the daily barrage of bad news with some caffeine-infused positivity. Aside from coffee drinks, customers can order up smoothies, energy drinks, bagels, sandwiches, and more.

L'Amyx offers customers not only a wide range of premium whole-leaf brewed beverages but also a sense of "tea appreciation... and awareness." Visit L'Amyx and learn how to pair the right tea with the right food, or get a brief history of the bar's beloved Monkey Tea. Tea connoisseurs can sip their drinks and kick back in an "oasis of relaxation" and a "friendly, sophisticated setting."

The Montclair Village shop serves organic coffee, pastries, and fresh sandwiches like egg salad and turkey.

You can rely on Rooz for your morning drink of choice and pastry, or grab a seat, take advantage of the free wi-fi, order a lunch sandwich, and stay a while. Beer and wine are available too, and for cheap during the weekday afternoon happy hour.
