Encinal Nursery is a medium-size nursery tucked away in Alameda. It has about an acres worth of inventory including Japanese maples, soils, sods, perennials, gardening equipment, and fertilizers. It also has a greenhouse specifically for houseplants and tropical plants. Encinal delivers.

Ploughshares is a retail and wholesale nursery specializing in locally grown California native, drought-tolerant, and edible plants. It carries organic mulch, soil, soil containers, seeds, and herbs. Its trees come in standard and dwarf sizes, including hard-to-find varieties. Ploughshares is a nonprofit business venture of the Alameda Point Collaborative and the supportive housing community. It occasionally hosts educational workshops, too.

Thomsen's is a medium-size nursery housed in a converted Victorian home. The parking is street only. But what Thomsen's lacks in size it makes up for with quality of service. It has a knowledgeable staff, a coffee shop upstairs, and a fairly wide selection of outdoor and indoor plants.
