Arts & Entertainment: Stage Theaters

The intimate, actor-founded repertory theater hosts a variety of performances, from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to The Lion in Winter, in addition to stand-up comedy nights and acting classes.

Located in a 70-year-old former-vaudeville theater house, Brava (note the feminine ending) is a "professional arts organization" dedicated to "celebrating the intersection of feminism and multiculturalism that ignites social change and builds community." Diverse audiences and national recognition make Brava a paragon of San Francisco culture.

High camp, tall wigs, thin plot-lines and dense punnery characterize "Beach Blanket Babylon", the 37-year-old show running at Club Fugazi. Fans of outrageous--in the grin-inducing sense of the word--musical theater should be delighted.

Piano music, jazz, cabaret, sketch comedy and musical theatre are just of the fare you might find on any given night at the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco in the Embarcadero. Casual, cozy atmosphere, cheap drinks, and great performers strongly recommend the Eureka Theatre for lovers of live, human entertainment.

A cozy, little theatre (seats around 50-60) in the Tenderloin that lets you bring your own drinks--how much better can it get? Serious drama, magic shows, and other, more "zombified" productions compose just a small sample of what the Exit Theatre has to offer. Quality actors and a cool setting make for a great night on the town.

For more than 40 years the non-profit Intersection for the Arts has pursued its mission of using art to foster positive social change. Founded by Vietnam War objectors and socially-conscious church groups, the intimate theatre space (consisting of about 60 seats) hosts a diverse array of music, performing art, drama and gallery installations, in addition to a number of outreach programs designed to encourage artistic production in the community.
