Arts & Entertainment: Performance Venues

Shows don’t happen often enough here, but when they do, it’s usually a treat. The Berkeley Community Theater, on the Berkeley High School campus, is a Grecian-style seated venue which is quite intimate and elegant for a school auditorium. This 3,500-capacity hall features a large floor section and an upper and lower balcony. Located close to bus lines and the Downtown Berkeley BART station.

A recently reinvigorated hip-hop and dance club located near UC Berkeley campus that attracts a youthful, party-forward audience. Berkeley Underground is located beneath a pizzeria and offers bottle service.

The Jazzschool offers lessons for would-be-musicians and music affcionados of all ages and skill level. Options include privet lessons, group performance workshops, and lectures on the history and theory of jazz. There are also live shows.

A beautiful, multitiered auditorium, the 2,000-seat-capacity Zellerbach Hall on the UC Berkeley campus features the finest in high art, including dance, music, and other cultural performances, with a focus on the international. From jazz to chamber music, classical piano recitals to opera, Zellerbach – one of the many stages for Cal Performances – isn’t just a venue for the financially inclined either. Discounted tickets are available to UC Berkeley students, faculty, staff, and alumni, seniors, non-UC Berkeley students, and members of KQED and the East Bay Arts Card. The only drawback is the lack of parking around Telegraph. There are a few lots, but they fill up fast, so plan to arrive early or wear comfortable walking shoes as the Downtown Berkeley BART station is quite a few blocks away.
