A long-running outlet of Ben Chasny, a songwriter now based in Western Massachusetts who retains strong ties to the Bay Area, Six Organs of Admittance recently released Hexadic. A gnarled work of snake pit electric guitar riffs and idiosyncratic arrangements, Hexadic is a somewhat startling departure from Chasny’s voluminous catalog of folk-forward acoustic material, which, while rigorously skewing guitar conventions, rarely sounded as mangled as this most recent statement. Still, Hexadic features few heavy music clichés: The title refers to a card system devised by Chasny to guide his composition, a technique that’s reminiscent of Brian Eno’s “Oblique Strategies” and the chance operations popularized by John Cage. As part of Noise Pop, Six Organs of Admittance headlines Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St., San Francisco) on Thursday, with Magik Markers’ Elisa Ambrogio and Skygreen Leopards’ Donovan Quinn as openers.
