Mike Hadreas’ first two albums as Perfume Genius — Learning and Put Your Back N 2 It — combine lilting, frail vocal melodies with spare piano accompaniment. Hadreas’ artful arrangement of limited elements and deeply confessional lyrics made the albums feel devastating. For this year’s Too Bright, which he will perform on Tuesday at The Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco), Hadreas got a new look. The cover depicts him with a sour facial expression and wearing a golden sequined top, like a resilient glam gladiator. The music is embellished and expanded with harsh keyboards and aggressive vocals. The lyrics follow suit. No family is safe/When I sashay, he proclaims on “Queen.” In the fantastic video, Hadreas struts down a boardroom table in heels. His early strengths in craft and compositional finesse meet audacity and pride on Too Bright. The effect is devastating — and exhilarating.
