Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education The California Chapter
Playwright, actor and educator Anna Deavere Smith turns her attention to “the school-to-prison pipeline” in Notes From the Field: Doing Time in Education, the California Chapter at the Berkeley Repertory Theater (2025 Addison Street, Berkeley), now playing through August 2. In the first act, Deavere Smith performs a series of monologues inspired by interviews she conducted with more than 150 individuals affected by the pipeline, which pushes children, a majority of them Black, from the classroom into the criminal justice system. Sweet and somber melodies from jazz musician Marcus Shelby accompany Deavere Smith throughout the performance, making for a compelling and emotionally evocative show. Things get even better during Act Two, when Deavere Smith breaks the fourth wall and invites the audience to engage in a unique discussion about what it means to be an agent of social change. $25-$89
