Paul Kalkbrenner is an electronic music producer from Berlin who regularly performs before massive crowds in Europe. In the United States, he’s lesser-known, which is why he’ll be performing at Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., San Francisco) on his first solo tour here. Kalkbrenner makes uplifting, minimalist techno music that tells stories of transition and movement: His tracks — including those heard on the album Self and the soundtrack he created for the film Berlin Calling — put listeners in a peaceful, reflective state. They’re also equally good to dance to. But as trance-like as his music can be, his live sets are notorious for being dynamic and unscripted. San Francisco-based house music duo Bells & Whistles will open the show.
