It’s time again to paint the town rainbow for Oakland Pride. Now in its fifth year, the annual celebration for the LGBTQ community and its allies is hosting a parade and festival that serve as a much mellower counterpart to the one across the bay. Beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Broadway and 14th Streets, the parade will be an opportunity to cheer, dance, and take over downtown. Following that is the nearby festival, between 17th and 23rd Streets. This year’s theme is “Pride is Oakland, Oakland is Pride,” a broad and inclusive declaration that aims to highlight the ways in which Oakland integrates support for the LGBTQ community. Fulfilling a dedication to inclusivity, Oakland Pride is a particularly family-friendly event — appropriate for the city with the highest concentration of LGBTQ families with children in the Bay Area. This year’s festival headliner is Sheila E, the Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and percussionist who is known for her dramatic drumming performances. Filling the rest of the bill will be Xelle, Moon Candy, Canarios, DJ Porn Star, Aisha Fugashima, Tania Soto, and Omega Rae. It’s bound to be the largest, loudest, queerest Oakland Pride to date.
