Too $hort
Too $hort has emerged as an emblem of West Coast rap and Bay Area regional trends in three distinctly different decades. First, with Born to Mack and Life is … Too $hort in the late 1980s, which showed the Oakland rapper’s deft handle on funk grooves beneath an understated flow saturated with lascivious subject matter, and then in the early 1990s when tracks such as “No Love from Oakland” created a pimp-rap template that artists such as 100s adhere to today. A spate of collaborations followed, with Too $hort appearing on Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac tracks, among others, and making inroads with the Southern rap scene while living in Atlanta. Back in the Bay Area, his 2006 release Blow the Whistle contained one of the hyphy era’s most recognizable tracks, and Too $hort eventually teamed up with another regional rap figurehead, E-40, for an impeccable and didactically titled pair of albums: History: Mob Music and History: Function Music in 2012. Too $hort, who appears at The New Parish (1743 San Pablo Ave., Oakland) on Monday, earned the professorial tone long ago. $25 - $30
