Zine Reading Rager

Tue., July 28, 6:30-9 p.m.
510-238-9171
Zine Reading Rager
Rock Paper Scissors Collective (2278 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) recently announced that it will soon shutter its current location because of a major rent increase. Should the collective disappear for a bit, one of the things that will be sorely missed about this incubator of underground culture is its extensive zine library. With a catalogue of hundreds of zines that span many subcultures, RPS is the go-to place in the East Bay to geek out on this form of DIY print media. On July 28, Rock Paper Scissors will host the Zine Reading Rager, a participatory event in which everyone is invited to work on or share his or her zine. After a zine-making session and open mic reading, Kelly Dessaint will present his narrative nonfiction zine series, Piltdownlad. Dessaint is writer who moonlights as a taxi and rideshare driver, and Piltdownlad contains witty, poetic observations from life on the road. Dessaint’s commitment to zines and small press publications has been steadfast since the Nineties. He is the founder of Phony Lid Books, a small press that has published Piltdownlad, his novel, A Masque of Infamy, and works by various other underground authors. Free

Bites Off Broadway

Fridays, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Continues through Oct. 9

Bites Off Broadway
There might be bigger food truck gatherings, and ones that attract slightly trendier vendors, but for our money, Oakland’s first officially sanctioned “food pod,” Bites Off Broadway (365 45th St., in front of the Studio One Art Center), is still one of the most charming of its kind. A veritable smorgasbord of face-painting, balloon-twisting, and hula-hooping should keep the kids entertained — and maybe help those of us who are only young in spirit to burn off some of those extra calories. Bring your own lawn chairs and picnic blanket. Free

Craft Night

First and Third Sunday of every month, 6-8 p.m.
510-238-9171
Craft Night
Sometimes drinking a bar after work to unwind gets a little old. Wouldn't you rather get together with an all ages group of creative people for a crafting free for all? Rock Paper Scissors Collective gathers crafting supplies precisely so you can do that, although you are free to bring your own supplies as well. Meet new people, listen to music, and get your DIY on, all for free. Also, tapping into your creative juices won't leave you with quite the same hang over when you have to get up for work on Friday. --Sarah Burke Free
