Rock Paper Scissors Collective (2278 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) recently announced that it will soon shutter its current location because of a major rent increase. Should the collective disappear for a bit, one of the things that will be sorely missed about this incubator of underground culture is its extensive zine library. With a catalogue of hundreds of zines that span many subcultures, RPS is the go-to place in the East Bay to geek out on this form of DIY print media. On July 28, Rock Paper Scissors will host the Zine Reading Rager, a participatory event in which everyone is invited to work on or share his or her zine. After a zine-making session and open mic reading, Kelly Dessaint will present his narrative nonfiction zine series, Piltdownlad. Dessaint is writer who moonlights as a taxi and rideshare driver, and Piltdownlad contains witty, poetic observations from life on the road. Dessaint’s commitment to zines and small press publications has been steadfast since the Nineties. He is the founder of Phony Lid Books, a small press that has published Piltdownlad, his novel, A Masque of Infamy, and works by various other underground authors.
