Rockin' Papers, Swingin' Scissors: Papercuts by Ryohei Tanaka

When: March 6-April 5 2010

Silhouettes cut from folded paper with scissors have lost their 18th-century cameo portrait connotations lately and gained American art-world credibility -- thanks to the incendiary images of Kara Walker -- but papercutting is an art form widely taught in Asia, so it gets no novelty points there. Even so, the people and creatures of Tokyo artist/cartoonist/illustrator/musician Ryohei Tanaka, combinations of wide-eyed anime cuteness and Ultramantokusatsu (special effects) weirdness, are knockout products of global hybrid culture, both kid- and adult-friendly, and perfectly executed, even if Tanaka protests, "I am all over the place. My room is a mess. My brain is a mess." (We prefer false immodesty in the mysterious West.) Some titles: "Oakland Zombie," "Sweet Cakes," "Wide Face," "Yoga Girl," "Mr. Quiet," and "Shocking Pink Bite." Book available.Rockin' Papers, Swingin' Scissors runs through April 3 at Rowan Morrison Gallery (330 40th St., Oakland). 510-384-5344 or RowanMorrison.com
