The Express is seeking a full-time Account Executive to sell print and digital advertising to Bay Area businesses and nonprofits. The ideal candidate should have previous B2B sales experience; strong knowledge of Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda; strong sales drive; and familiarity with Express. Though there are many categories of advertising business this position will pursue, we are prioritizing someone excited to focus on local bars and restaurants, wine and spirits, and events.
A typical week includes the following tasks:
• Canvassing neighborhoods for leads and to make connections
• Meeting with business owners at their establishments to sell advertising
• Calling and emailing current and prospective clients
• Researching leads online
• Writing proposals that meet client needs
• Helping clients conceptualize ad content and design (though you won't do the ad design)
• Collecting payments for advertising
• Meeting internal deadlines in order to ensure smooth and accurate production of the paper
• Participating in training meetings and team meetings
• Keeping the CRM database current
Successful candidates have stellar interpersonal skills, enjoy selling, and are eager to see their clients succeed. Also, they must have a passion for what they are selling -- the East Bay Express. Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must. Attention to detail, the ability to multi-task, and self-determination to meet goals is critical.

Do you have a passion for design and journalism? If so, the Express is looking for an experienced graphic designer and art director to join its newsroom.
The AD’s duties will focus primarily on editorial design, including weekly front covers and editorial layout. The AD also will be in charge of design for the Express’ marketing and branding campaigns, and will occasionally support the production manager with ad design and management.
Strong-level fluency in Adobe Creative Suite — specifically InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator on a Mac platform — is crucial. Photography, illustration, and typography skills are a plus. Experience working with freelance photographers and illustrators is preferred.

The East Bay Express, a free weekly newspaper, is looking for help with the following responsibilities related to its distribution department:
• Cleaning metal news boxes inside and out, removing trash and graffiti
• Repairing damaged news boxes, replacing parts and/or repainting them as needed
• Auditing routes to ensure drivers are delivering papers accurately and racks are in good repair
• Assisting in the warehouse on distribution day, Wednesday, helping drivers load their vehicles
• Delivering routes on Wednesday if a driver fails to do so
• Cleaning and organizing the warehouse on a regular basis
• Other odd jobs as needed
You do need a reliable vehicle for this job - no exceptions. However, we have access to a van for larger capacity jobs.
Schedule is somewhat flexible with the exception of Wednesdays. Please indicate your availability when interviewing with the Distribution Director.
This job is 16-20 hours per week and pays $20/hour plus reimbursement for personal vehicle mileage.
No experience required - you will be training on all duties. You must be able to comfortably lift 50 pounds and be willing to work around graffiti-removal chemicals and spray paint (while wearing masks). All equipment and supplies needed to do the work are provided.

Specific positions include: News Intern, Entertainment and Arts Intern, Social-Media Intern, Photography Intern.
This is not your typical newsroom experience. During your internship, you will work closely with our editors and writers, learning firsthand about everything from breaking-news reporting and records/investigative, or interviewing artists and programming a music and entertainment section. Some graduates of our internships even leave with Cover Story clips on their resumé!
The intern program also includes regular journalism-training seminars.
All interns must earn college credit. The commitment is up to 20 hours a week. We are flexible and understand that you have academic priorities.
