Employment Opportunities

Restaurant Reviewer & Food Writer
Join the award-winning Express as its next restaurant reviewer.

We’re looking to hire a weekly food critic and regular contributor who can deliver more than just a conversation about what’s on a plate.

Yes, an understanding of culinary craft and the restaurant biz is crucial. And of course we want someone with a thumb on the industry’s pulse. But we also value a thoughtful writer who can spark discussion about issues such as the intersection of food and community, and the socio-political and economic aspects of eating.

In the tradition of our food-and-drink coverage, we also value a critic who cares about off-the-radar eateries spanning the entire East Bay, and who will seek out undiscovered spots and under-represented cuisines.

This might be a full-time staff position or a freelance opportunity — we're flexible!

How To Apply:Please include in your application: 1) a link to two examples of food writing, 2) a résumé, linked or attached, 3) your thoughts on how food writing at the Express should distinguish itself from what you will read at other Bay Area media companies (in less than 150 words).

Email applications to Editor-in-Chief Nick Miller at Nick.Miller@EastBayExpress.com. Please write "RESTAURANT REVIEWER" in the subject line. No phone calls or follow-up emails. Deadline is April 7.

2017 Editorial Internships
Join the award-winning Express as a Summer 2017 intern!

New Deadline to Apply: April 14, 2017

Specific positions include: News & Investigations Intern, Entertainment and Arts Intern, Social-Media Intern, Photography Intern, Design Intern.

This is not your typical, traditional-media newsroom experience. We are a small staff, and during your internship, you will work closely with our editors and writers. You'll be part of the core editorial team, sitting in on management and staff meetings, and helping make decisions about daily and weekly programming. You'll learn firsthand about everything, from how a paper goes to print and records work, to interviewing artists and programming a music and entertainment section. Some graduates of our internships even leave with Cover Story clips on their resumé.

The intern program also includes regular journalism-training seminars.

All interns must earn college credit. The commitment is 10-15 hours a week. We are flexible and understand that you have academic priorities.

Apply in March for the Summer 2017 Internship! Please include in your application: 1) a 150-word paragraph on why you should be chosen as an intern at the Express, 2) your education and employment history, 3) specific journalism interests. Send this email to Editor-in-Chief Nick Miller at Nick.Miller@EastBayExpress.com. Please write "SUMMER INTERNSHIP" in the subject line.
