The East Bay Express has an immediate vacancy for the entry-level position of clubs editor, the person in charge of compiling the East Bay’s most comprehensive weekly music listings. Our ideal candidate is someone with an interest in and awareness of the vast Bay Area music scene — not just indie rock and hip-hop, but also electronica, country, world, folk, experimental, metal, and classical. The clubs editor will also write one 150-word show recommendation per week, plus two 250-word CD reviews and either two 850-word music stories or one 1200-word music story per month. Applicants must be organized; detail-oriented; discerning; have an aptitude for data entry; and be able to write clean, compelling content. This is a part-time, 16-hours-a-week job without benefits. Applicants should send a résumé, three relevant clips, and a letter explaining why you’re right for the job to Co-Editor Kathleen Richards at Kathleen[dot]Richards[at]eastbayexpress[dot]com. No phone calls, please.
The Express is seeking several interns for the summer semester. Interns will be responsible for a broad range of newsroom tasks — including blogging, reporting, photography, database management, research, and various other projects — to be assigned based on experience and interest; those who show initiative are welcome to pitch and write stories for our news, culture, features, and music sections, for which they will be paid our standard freelance rates. Many of our past participants have finished the internship having produced cover stories, though the program is designed to appeal to people with a broad range of writing interests and experience levels. To that end, interns will work closely with our editors to come up with a personalized set of duties intended to develop their writing, reporting, and organizational skills.
Prior journalism experience and familiarity with the East Bay are strongly preferred but not required. The internship is unpaid; interns must be able to receive school credit and be available for at least ten hours a week. The deadline for the fall internship is August 1. Please send a resume, cover letter, and three writing samples to Ellen.Cushing at EastBayExpress.com.
