Re: “Skates on the Bay

I loved the clams and mussels at happy hour. And the Margharita was sweet and potent. Long live happy hour. Seeing sailing and motor boats as well as birds and people gliding by on their gliding apparatus was a wonderful plus.

Re: “Gaumenkitzel

Fresh and local! so far had breakfast, lunch, and (early) dinner there. While the menu reads quaint and descriptive (typically German!) all dishes were absolutely fabulous and delicious, and surprisingly reasonable.

The salmon was buttery and melting in your mouth, with a nice crispy pan-seared crust on top. The rainbow chard (usually not my taste) was surprisingly flavorful, slightly on the spicy side (good!), and with great texture.

All breakfast choices were fantastic - try the jams and meats! Delicious home-made rolls, with tasty and zesty marmelades, soft and flavorful cheeses, and buttery eggs from the oven with home-made quark. Yummi! Together with the very kids-friendly service and environment a great place to go - alone, with my family, with friends.

Re: “Sonoma Coffee Cafe

Awesome photos! They perfectly capture how I always pictured Berkeley before I moved to the bay area.

Re: “Sonoma Coffee Cafe

Great show! Documentary photos of Berkeley in the 1960's,
with many shots of the response of CA Governor Ronald Reagan to
the People's Park protest - he ordered the National Guard to take
over downtown Berkeley and the UC campus. Also interesting photos of Tim Leary, dancing and music in the streets. Photos are for sale.

Re: “Disco Volante

Lousy service - and they do not keep their committment to the musicians and pay them what was agreed upon in email.

I do not recommend this place as I said, the owner Damon was rude - demanded I give up the table I had been holding waiting for a friends to join me for dinner - no sooner did I give up the table when my friends came in. Because I had one of my artists performing their that night and had asked several people to come out to support I could not very well leave - we wound up standing in the back eating dinner standing up at the end of the bar - when I had sufficient seating for us - just 5 mins before their arrival! I had promoted telling my friends to come out and support this new business! DO NOT SUPPORT THEM!

Damon agreed to a $10 cover for the bands I booked - and refused to charge more than $5 - I understand venues are hurting - but when you agree to something you must keep your word - I even reached a compromise and communicated with the musicians - they still did not honor their word on the compromise - he was insulting to me - insulting to the musicians - and I strongly advise not going here - the only redeemable thing about this place are the corn nuts!

The food at Pepe's is good tasting. I wish you had asked a few questions like is the pasta made fresh and where does the cheese come from? Thanks anyway.

Great neighborhood bar with the East Bay's best patio. Good selection of booze for great prices and the jukebox rocks!

Re: “Cole Coffee

If you like the kind of coffee that puts hair on your chest and is missing that burnt-been-sitting-here-for-hours taste, then look no more. No matter if you buy the beans or come in for a cup, Cole consistently has the best coffee in town. This is not the weakstuff in which you can see the bottom of your cup. This is colon exercising brew that tastes delicious!

Re: “Cock-A-Doodle Cafe

GREAT CUBAN FOOD...RIGHT HERE IN OAKLAND!!! FInally, my prayers have been answered. A friend told me about this place, so I decided to check it out. I showed up almost at closing time and to my surprise, I was greeted warmly by Sandra and Fermin, She runs the restaurant, he cooks heavenly authentic Cuban food. And I do mean authentic. I was born in Cuba, so I know what I'm talking about. Were it not for the fact that it would have been very unseemly I would have licked the plate clean when I finished my lechon asado. We're talking lechon the way my grandmother and mother did it. Dios mio, it was good. And the tostones....ahh, I could have eaten 3 more plates of them. Sheer pefection, with a little mojo sprinkled on top! They're open for dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I can't wait to go back again and introduce my friends to this little slice of Cuban heaven in the East Bay!

Re: “Keter Salon

Keter is the best! Aviva Morger gives awesome haircuts!! I know this because I've gotten more positive comments to her haircuts than any other in my life. Her style can be sassy, down to earth and or high style. The salon is upbeat with friendly people. The location is ideal. What more could you ask for?
