Re: “Oakland Firefighters Say Their Department Is So Badly Managed, Ghost Ship Warehouse Wasn't Even In Its Inspection Database

The lesson that responsible grown-ups need to enforce responsible and lawful behavior is utterly lost on Demotro Polis and his or her red fist. Next time you think about calling police...don't. Just stand right there and defend yourself with your little cartoon fist.

We need all those police AND all those firemen. Was there not enough money to pay for these employees? Let me tell you this...if a warehouse has an assessed value of 43k but that warehouse is worth 6k in rent every month with absolutely no improvements or upkeep then something is drastically wrong with the assessed value in the first place. And that is where the taxes come to pay, for example, firemen.

If the warehouse was being used as an apartment then back taxes should be paid for all the years of under-the-radar unzoned usage.

Re: “Artists Who Survived Oakland Warehouse Fire Discuss The Tragedy, Those Missing, Need for Safe Underground Spaces

I live on the East Coast in SC, I loved Green Day in my teens. I feel like there is an amazing culture of artists that I know nothing about. I am not artistically inclined, but I enjoy the products of those that are. I am the mother of a 20 year old son and a 17 year old daughter. I do not condone drugs, or rule breaking... but I have to say Wow! I wish there were a place for these guys to go.

I have been following this with a heavy heart since seeing the headline a few days ago. Perhaps, Oakland can come together, in order to preserve such a unique culture of individuals. I can't say that I understand how these guys live, but a small part of me wishes that I could!

These individuals seem like a family of their own. How wonderful to be accepted just because you are human, so sad that this resorted in catastrophe. Now as the "grown up" side of me comes back.... I think what was an older man at 47 thinking??? I know that the blame is not at just his feet and likely more complex than I can understand just by reading about this. But seriously... once you begin having your own children to support there does come a time when your life is more about watching your own children grow instead of forever throwing caution to the wind???

I wish peace to all that has been affected. Know that there are so many of us that truly appreciate talented people. I also believe that artistically inclined individuals need places for gatherings with other like minded people. I think that is the real question here... what is going to be done to help this community of young talented people? Forget drugs, raves, and everything else that I really can't speak about from here in small town America.. but I love the idea that there is a broader picture and I want my life to be enriched by the talents of others. I am a Medical Assistant in school for nursing, I can help others but if I had to sing or entertain the world would not be a better place. Good luck, Oakland! And all that you stand for

Re: “Stop Blaming Artists and Musicians for the Ghost Ship Fire. Blame People In Power Who Screwed Up.

EBX's editor, @nicmiller510 really needs to read through the comments here, such as LJ Schneider and Nick Bolla's and consider revising their position.

The "low-income creatives" who ran Satya Yuga are primarily to blame for the 36 deaths that resulted. They're the ones who created the hazard. Certainly officials and the owner and his daughter bear some responsibility too. But the creatives were able to furnish and build the amazing art that was in that place; they certainly could have made a small effort to address safety too.

Hopelessly plugged ears and eyes with eyeshades.

This JohnNoMoniker is still unable to engage in a conversation without slurs. And now, ensuring safety and promoting maturity are "capitalistic" in nature and therefore wrong.

I guess he is the troll not to be feed...........

Re: “If Oakland Cracks Down On Underground Warehouses, It Will Snuff Out The City’s DIY Soul

Mr. Good: To be honest, I still consider you a troll, just one that uses the loaded language of a very specific definition of "reason" to push a callous agenda - as evidenced by your comments on this thread and others. A current example: no, I cannot put up dozens of displaced friends in my small living quarters, I wish I could - I would rather they not be displaced immediately from their generally quite-safe current homes because their landlords looked the other way for MANY years with regard to zoning specifics. To suggest nothing else as recourse for them (many of whom are highly marginalized people who will likely end up homeless), and that this is implied as somehow an acceptable outcome, is callous and trollish. Especially when you consider that many of them are currently grieving the loss of loved ones and roomates.

That said, your trollishness is nothing conpared to the likes of Sar Wash above, who simulataneously sent his "prayers" out to the victims of the fire and called them fake artists who don't have "real jobs" (most of the artists I know work other jobs full time and are still poor here). These kinds of comments evidence zero comprehension of the type of collective culture that is under assault here, other than resentment towards it - probably because of its anticapitalist nature as much as anything else. You all should really stop trying to turn Oakland into Walnut Creek.

Re: “Friends Remember Integral Bay Area Artists, Musicians, and Sound Engineers Still Missing after Ghost Ship Fire

Charles, I can understand why you might assume that, but I can tell you honestly and confidently that they weren't high. I knew many of these people and had gone to many shows with them. They would have been there for the music, not for drugs. The very good music that their friends and community members were putting on for them that night and the chance to be in the company of old and new friends was the draw for them. Just like it has been for me many nights, if I had known so many friends were showing up to this that would have been all the draw I needed to get myself out of the house and go see what everybody was working on and listening to. I'm not trying to claim that everybody who goes to music shows in the world is an angel, but these people specifically were genuinely some of the cleanest, kindest, hardest working and most decent people and artists you would ever meet.

I agree that Derick seems like a genuinely awful person, and I do blame him for setting up this space that my friends couldn't get out of. I think he was too myopic and self-obsessed to take the responsibility that too many good people unwittingly trusted him to have taken.

Re: “An Open Letter to Our Community, From the Former Residents of the Recently Closed LoBot Gallery in West Oakland

The Former LoBot Gallery Residents' friends at Ghost Ship / Satya Yuga are clearly guilty of manslaughter. The evidence in the press, and that I saw first hand, is overwhelming, as I see it.* That they say "To our friends at Ghost Ship: We are with you" is despicable. Shame!

Former residents: You explicitly ally yourself with people who hosted events that attracted large crowds to spaces that not only didn't come close to meeting the codes for assembly spaces, they didn't even come close to the much more lax codes for business or residential space - or even the codes for warehouse space, which are the most lax of all. Worse than that, you want to CONTINUE TO DO SO. Damn you. 36 dead isn't enough? Dead bodies are not art.

If you want folks not to call to have your space red tagged, don't say "We want our spaces retrofitted for modern fire-suppression systems, exits, and alarms." If you'd said, "We want a little time to retrofit our spaces with as much safety features as we can afford - modern fire-suppression systems if we can, but certainly sufficient well-marked exits, fire extinguishers and alarms." I'd be with you.

*Unmarked and locked exits, extremely unsafe electrical wiring, no working fire extinguishers or smoke detectors... There are numerous reports that the residents who ran Ghost Ship laughed at people who raised safety concerns.

Re: “Oakland's Ron Dellums on President Trump: 'Step Forward'

Just another broken minded liberal thinking that their self-importance should be heard by everyone, when in fact nobody cares. He wants us to believe that he has a firm grasp on this matter, when in reality he keeps spouting the liberal nonsense that is prevalent on the #fakenews from CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, CBS and sometimes at FOX. All of America sees a fool on a mission that can't see the truth in front of his very face. Hillary is the one that stole the votes, which is the only reason that it seemed close (3 million proven illegal immigrants voted in California alone). On this fact alone we, the United States of America, will change the law where you idiots will go to prison when you break it next time. Only legal residents should vote, but the moral high road liberals think it's okay to let the whole world vote in our elections. I have never heard of anything so idiotic in my life. Keep up the stupidity and we will be forced to enact laws that will make your liberal minds explode! Annexing the California vote is certainly a viable option.

Re: “Oakland Firefighters Say Their Department Is So Badly Managed, Ghost Ship Warehouse Wasn't Even In Its Inspection Database

thanks for this . it's time to reduce police budget, to require police to be individually insured and boded, and force them and their union to pay out 'settlements' and lost lawsuits due to police misconduct and brutality

these funds will be plenty to pay for as many first responders and firefighters, along with training, as we need

Re: “If Oakland Cracks Down On Underground Warehouses, It Will Snuff Out The City’s DIY Soul

At a minimum, we need immediate eviction of anyone who is occupying a building without his name being on a formal and legal lease. The only way to honor the victims of this renter and squatters is to shut down all of these warehouses. These fake artists, who refuse to live where they can afford or get a real job, need to take responsibility. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of these squatters and this renter.

Re: “Oakland Warehouse Fire: 'It Was A Tinderbox. I Don't Recollect Anybody Coming Out.'

Here is lack of tact for you from a crusty adult....if Derick and his wife were getting foood stamps then they should be investigated for food stamp fraud on top of all the manslaughter charges and code violations.

I would wager Derick flees the country and leaves the wife holding the bag. Anybody remember Martin Pang and the Seattle warehouse fire circa 1997?

Brazil. He fled to Brazil.

Detain this guy ASAP

Re: “'I Genuinely Thought I Was Going To Die': Reddit User Describes Terrifying Escape From Oakland Warehouse Fire

I am going to keep bringing this issue up...were Derick and his wife getting food stamps while claiming to be broke....while growig pot and flying to Bali on vacations? Collecting rent....partying....putting nothing into fixes but sleeping on gigantic hand-carved beds from Bali?

I bet Derick gets SSI for his obvious bipolar hoarder he can't work and then he is the little rent collecting diety if this "scene." If there is welfare fraud in addition to manslaughter...let it all cime to light, the sloth and hedonism all funded by taxpayers.

How were the kids stayig at a hotel before the fire? I bet Child Protective Services or Section 8 was paying for the hotel.

Re: “Oakland's Top Housing Official: There Is No Affordable Housing Crisis

There needs to be a bum Enforcement agency all to itself to clean the scum off the streets and more evictions and repairs to dilapidated shithole properties and individuals in order to make way for more vibrant and productive citizens to move in to this champion city. We can Give the grime there own little part of town and move the st Vincent down there next to it, and the recycling yard as well, give them a place to be so!what sane and clean up there own shit. Agencies like police fire department housing parks and rec sanitation and others need to start to collaborate and make solutions for the taxpayers. We aren't paying them To go through to motions. Developers and likes in the public sector can start to meet with officials and form there own public agencies to make Oakland great again. Meanwhile artist who can't afford to live here can always look elsewhere. You have no right to claim residence somewhere because that's where your most comfortable. Get lost!

Re: “Oakland Firefighters Say Their Department Is So Badly Managed, Ghost Ship Warehouse Wasn't Even In Its Inspection Database

Real firemen are snuff-chewing, spitting, swearing, politically-incorrect he-man manly men.

It is obvious this particular department is emphasizing something besides putting out fires and a whole class of warrior fire fighters have stayed away rather than pursue a job in a department where they will inevitably run afoul of the PC police.

Did you see that Saturday Nigjt Live sketch called The Bubble? Remember who didn't want to live in The Bubble?
