Re: “Yelp and the Business of Extortion 2.0

Damn Yelp... I was just going to leave a positive comment for DoctorsExpress when I came across this "strong-arm" tactic ur pulling. It's a shame that a company allows their employees to get down like that. Basically, ur fucking yourself off. Just keep it SOLID with ALL businesses. Your advertisements will come... This goes for everyone... You get what you give!

Re: “Updated: Libby Schaaf Dominates Race for Oakland Mayoral Campaign Cash

There just might be a somewhat more useful way to look at who or what dominates the mayor's race. If you think only about the establishment, then perhaps it makes sense to focus on the corporate Democrat and out-of-town finance success of Schaaf. That might well be the perspective of someone who doesn't live in or know much about Oakland.

Of the twenty-something people running for mayor just three are currently members of the establishment--Schaaf, Quan and Kaplan. I exclude City Auditor Ruby because she has made a point of criticizing and taking on the establishment. We probably don't have to think really hard to try to discover why there are so many challengers.

Of the people listed here the establishment candidates, Schaaf, Quan and Kaplan, have raised a total of about $702K.

Of the people listed here the challengers to the establishment, Siegel, Ruby, Parker and Tuman, have raised a total of about $731K.

What is this money spent on? It's spent on communicating with the electorate. What are the messages? Probably something like "We're doing great" and "we're not really doing so great."

Combine the above thoughts with the way our instant-runoff voting system "works." The system divides the votes and strongly favors candidates who don't get a majority on the first count.

Seems to me many Oakland voters really want change this time around. I think this is what the evidence shows rather than that Schaaf will continue our fine traditions.

Re: “Go Away, Oyster Man — Really

#Rhys Ludlow-Did you not read the article? " In fact, he's been operating all through his legal appeals, tending his oyster beds, planting invasive species, and buzzing his boats through the estero, past important pupping grounds for harbor seals."
This is the harm: Planting invasive species and buzzing his boats through pupping grounds for harbor seals.
Since he has lost at every angle, why is he allowed to continue? Why isn't he arrested or at least cited for violating National Park lands Prohibited uses or something?

Re: “Do Or Die for Mystery Pot Law

I'm grateful for Assemblyman Ammiano's continued support of finding reasonable ways to advance patient access to medical cannabis. The 7/2/2014 version of SB 1262 (page 21, lines 33-36), gave law enforcement 100% veto power to obstruct all licensing throughout California if a license might "tend" to create any "problem for law enforcement" (perceived or real), including law enforcement in other states. Effectively that would have shut down all cultivators and dispensaries under SB 1262. That latest mock-up of SB 1262 (to be amended soon), is even worse and violates Fourth and Fifth Amendment civil rights over search & seizure, and protections against self-incrimination. SB 1262 is a mess!

Re: “California Medi-Pot Regs Lose Major Support

Because ASAP won't exist anymore if we actually get regulations. Promoting and supporting counterproductive legislation ensures continued existence for their organization and hence, paychecks

Re: “Thursday Must Reads: OPD Ordered to Reinstate Cop Who Shot at Scott Olsen; Black BART Workers Subjected to Racist, Violent Threats

The public has every right to know why the OPD officer who recklessly fired a flash-bang at people were trying to help a fallen comrade was reinstated.

The excuse of, "he was just following orders" is not in any way acceptable. Nazi war criminals at the Nuremberg trials used the same defense for their actions, but it didn't work. Why should it work in Oakland, or anywhere in the United States?

Re: “It's Time to End the Death Penalty Nightmare

The time has come to end the death penalty in California, once and for all. The fact that both Gov. Jerry Brown and Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris are dragging their feet, even after a Republican appointed judge ruled it unconstitutional, is just more evidence that both of these two elected officials are guilty of betraying their credentials as liberals.

What true liberal, which is how both Brown and Harris have always identified themselves, tolerates executing anyone? The anti-death penalty stance has always been a mainstay for any person calling themselves a liberal.

Another thing, I don't see how sentencing a convicted murderer to spend the rest of their life in prison without the chance for parole is allowing him to get away with anything. I can't imagine a worse punishment than to spend the rest of my life locked away in an 8' x 10' room until I died. How is that possibly being "soft on crime?"

Re: “It's Time to End the Death Penalty Nightmare

Neither Harris nor Brown are particularly courageous for opposing capital punishment in California. After all both were elected after their opposition was well-known. The death penalty should be abolished not because some people don't deserve to die or the method of execution is inhumane, but because in a class-ridden society almost all the people executed are poor people and/or people of color.

These environmental groups along with Democrats are the direct cause of water shortage in California. In the effort to save a delta smelt fish, they destroyed millions acres of farms and let fresh water drained to the Pacific.

We don't need a bunch of arbitrary and capricious restrictions to medical Cannabis. We need legalization. Make it happen.

Re: “Books Are Dead. Long Live Books.

Excellent story. Thank you for highlighting the East Bay arts scene so well. Power of poetry, music, art, books is renewing our spirits, drawing people to downtown Oakland and other spots, and building community. Exciting time to be living, working and both creating and enjoying art in this area. People crowded into poetry readings is a wonderful thing, and the poetry is marvelous, too!

Re: “It's Time to End the Death Penalty Nightmare

Jerry Brown denies people's right to "open carry" guns in public. Jerry Brown is a traitor to the United States' Constitution which he had sworn to defend. The federal courts just overturned DC's ban on handguns in public as a violation of the 2nd Amendment. Brown is a coward for passing unconstitutional laws to restrict citizens' rights to defend themselves against tyranny of government and thugs. Down with Brown!

Re: “It's Time to End the Death Penalty Nightmare

I think the firing squad would be a welcome sight, to people who have lost a loved one. To allow people to get away with murder is cruel. We as a society need to punish those who have no regard for life. Will it be messy . What about having them dig a hole first then stand in front. When they get shot they fall in and no mess. We are to soft on crime. Look our prisons are full. If we go back to breaking rocks and firing squads, maybe, just maybe, will get back to normal. I know you want them to get better medical then most voters, better food than most citizens and a gym and controlled heat and cooling. If their on death row shoot them lets get something done stop this gridlock.

Re: “'There is No Such Thing As a Child Prostitute'

I've known commercially sexually exploited children who explained that they would rather have sex with strangers than be raped by family members or molested by a foster parent. Some of them have the illusion of control and feel they have made an independent decision, rather than being manipulated and controlled.

And why doesn't this article mention the fine, upstanding citizens who buy children for sex? Chances are they molest their own children as well, being pedophiles and/or ephebephiles. (An ephebephile is an adult who is attracted to young teens. They generally don't want kids who can pass for over 18, either. It's the vulnerability of youth that attracts them. ) They should be charged as child molesters and put on Megan's List, in my opinion.
