Re: “Former Black Panther Party Newspaper Staffers Discuss Social and Racial Justice

Congrats on an article well done. Since I was not living in the Bay Area at the time, much of what we read and saw on TV in LA was heavily biased. We knew it, but had no access. Your interview points that out and emphasizes the relevance of improved communications to #BlackLivesMatter and other activist groups. When I later became a social worker with the homeless in San Francisco, my mentor, Betty Crowder, always credited Willa Gray, her professor at San Francisco State and the Black Panthers for her training. Thanks for your hard work. See you at OMCA and Power to the People!

Re: “Oakland's Street-Repair Deficit is Deep. The Mayor Says a $600 Million Bond Needed to Address the Problem.

I oppose the City of Oakland’s $600 million ‘Bond Measure KK’ because the property tax that pays for it will be twice the stated cost of the bond. The bond is for $600 million but the property tax is $1,179,640,700 [approximately $1.2 billion]. [See Measure KK ‘TAX RATE STATEMENT’ ¶4] This doubling of the cost is due to the fact the bond omits the financing costs. Oakland’s presentation of Measure KK is deceptive because the only mention of the true property tax cost [$1,179,640,700] of the $600 million bond is buried on the last page of the measure hidden among many other numbers such as parcel property tax rates. Nowhere in Measure KK does Oakland state the finance cost of the bond, as law requires.
I oppose this $600 million ‘Bond Measure KK’ because Oakland is not capable of administering a contract wisely. The Alameda County Grand Jury found that Oakland totally mismanaged the recent $50 million garbage contract resulting in a 50% increase of our monthly garbage bill. [See 2015-2016 Grand Jury Report @ on p.39] Now Oakland wants $600 million of taxpayer money to dole out and manage in contracts. Oakland has proven that it cannot manage money wisely and should not be trusted with large budget until it has proven ability to manage small budgets.
I oppose this $600 million ‘Bond Measure KK’ because the taxpayers were not consulted either as to the importance of the projects or the costs of them. The Bond Measure and the supporting documents refer to budget items such as ‘Streets and Roads Projects, in the amount of $350 million’ for repaving repairs. Oakland refuses to release documents that show the existing repaving budget, the existing funds for the repaving or the why more funds are needed.
Congress Representative Barbara Lee has done a fantastic job of bringing home Federal funds to repave Oakland streets. City Administration Office has made no attempt to inform the property owners why Oakland needs more money for paving than the Federal funds and the Oakland ongoing paving budget already provides. Oakland has failed to explain the $350 million shortfall in the paving budget. The Bond documents merely states the problem without informing the taxpayers the existing resources that solve the problem.
Oakland’s infrastructure improvements need to be done incrementally. The taxpayer must evaluate the value received before additional tax money is supplied. All new property taxes should be spent on Oakland’s infrastructure; not 50% given to Wall Street financiers.
Vote ‘NO” on Oakland’s waste of our tax dollars! Vote ‘NO’ on Measure KK!

Re: “Letters for the Week of October 19, 2016

I also think that the Board including in its 12 year $120 parcel tax the provision that increase in the Board's middle school charter school enrollment, over and above any District middle school enrollment increases, will trigger a redistribution of District pay raises to fund addition pay raises for mostly non-union Board charter school employees is going to upset Oakland Unified School District employees when they see their pay checks being reduced.

Whomever thought up this redistribution of employees pay raise to charter school employees for Measure G1 should be fired. And, passage of Measure G1 means that this dumb idea will be in place for 12 years.

Anyone want to join me in voting NO on Measure G1 dumb parcel tax?

Re: “Vote With Us! The East Bay Express' Endorsements for Election Day 2016.

Hmm, all that text and only one mention of climate (in the endorsement of Eric Swalwell, who sadly is no position to do much that isn't just rhetorical). I didn't watch all the video, but did the subject even come up?

Surely the critical issue of our time deserved more attention than that?

Re: “Vote With Us! The East Bay Express' Endorsements for Election Day 2016.

Your analysis of the results of K1 in Alameda failing are grossly incorrect. It will not "blow a $5 million hole in the general fund." There are two items in the measure:
1) an advisory vote on the transfer of over $3M/yr from Alameda Municipal Power to the city. Pass or fail nothing will change.
2) A vote to update the UUT to cover more items. If it fails the current UUT will continue to be collected, so no change. If it passes the UUT will be extended to new services and the funds generated will increase.

You have done a great disservice to people looking for voting guidance by saying the city will lose $5M from the general fund if K1 does not pass.

Re: “Vote With Us! The East Bay Express' Endorsements for Election Day 2016.

I don't understand your Alameda endorsements. At a LWV Candidate Forum, Marilyn Ashcraft explicitly endorsed L1, not M1. Vella failed to endorse either, but explicitly opposed L1. How is Ashcraft better on Alameda Point development than Daysog? Vella a "Labor Leader"? She has only been a lawyer for barely 4 years, and her first job seems to be as a lawyer representing Teamsters, but she has never been a union laborer herself. how does that limited experience make her a "labor leader"?

Re: “California Traffic Tickets Amnesty Program Leaves Many Behind

I would like to bring this to the notice of the public about how i met Anz Jackson Financing PLC after i lost my job and being denied loan by my bank and other financial institution due to my credit score. I could not pay my children's fees. I was behind on bills, about to be thrown out of the house due to my inability to pay my rent, It was during this period my kids were taken from me by foster care. Then i set out to seek for funds online where i lost $3,670 that i borrowed from friends which i was rip off by two companies. Until i read about: where i was granted a loan to pay up my debts and to start up a business. You can as well give them a call or text at: +18437769340. Why am i doing this? I am doing this to save as many that are in need of a loan not to be victim of scams on the internet../

Does the Harris family receive private school scholarship money funded by the Roger's Foundation or their affiliates?

Re: “Vote With Us! The East Bay Express' Endorsements for Election Day 2016.

I'm voting no on G1, another $120 OUSD parcel tax. Yes, another, the last one just went into effect last year. OUSD doesn't seem to be able to budget for more than a few months at a time. And the processing of exemptions to the last parcel tax for seniors and low-income people was so badly bungled
they're still working on it. OUSD did not provide adequate notification to eligible homeowners of the application process for exemptions. Finally,
Oakland's parcel taxes are flat, regressive taxes--only city in the area to fail to try to base them on size/value of property.

Re: “Vote With Us! The East Bay Express' Endorsements for Election Day 2016.

Vote No on Oakland School Board $120 per parcel Measure G1. This is the third parcel tax and the worse of all three.

If you read G1 extended text on how Measure G1 funding is allocated between annually between the Board's 37 charter schools with mostly non-union employees, and the District's union employees, you can see the Measure is written to take funding from District employees pay raise and redistribute that pay raise funding to the Board's charter school employees. The language of Measure G1 requires that each year the percentage of G1 funding that funds employees is divided between District and charter employees based on the enrollment of middle school grades 6, 7, 8. Oakland charter friendly School Board keeps approving more and more charter schools. Tomorrow night they will approve a 6 through 8 charter that will reduce the funding that could be offered to District employees in a pay raise if there where the current 20 charter middle schools.

Millions are being released by the Federal government to grow more charters and as the middle school charters grow funding flows to the Board's charter school employees.

In the middle of a teacher shortage it makes no sense to be reducing the pay of Oakland School Teachers and increasing the funding of the Board's charter school employees. But, buried in the text of Measure G1 that is what voters are being asked to vote on by the Oakland School Board.
