Re: “Developer Stiffs City on Permits for West Oakland Condo Project

No doubt this is a bad look for the developer (Madison Park). On it's face, it looks like the developer or demolition contractor tried to skirt the fees and the required permit process. At the same time, it is not unbelievable that a demolition contractor might have had to scramble to get barriers to block sidewalks and streets. Also believable is that those barriers came from another job site and the crew failed to remove the signs. My question has more to do with why the City of Oakland Building Department did not review a plan and require the permits for sidewalk and street closures when they initially issued the demolition permit? Additionally, if there is ongoing work on the site (grading, demolition) under permit, why was it that it was neighbors who noticed the signs and not city building inspectors? It may just be been another example of the lack of coordination between city departments (Building and Public Works).

Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

Someone needs to talk to all those folks with fancy titles who hang out in city hall about OPD, the Oakland Police Department, which is, in fact, an actual, official, Department of the city government of the city of Oakland.

Thus whatever OPD does is fundamentally the responsibility of those elected folks with fancy titles.

If the fancy-titled electeds don't know what OPD does, then what the hell are those folks doing?

Some things they are not doing is providing for the public safety, insuring ethical behavior in OPD and making sure OPD reforms mandated nearly 15 years ago are fully implemented. Not to mention being responsible for whatever OPD does with regard to protecting Oaklanders from ICE and whatever Trump comes up with.

Maybe we need a new city commission like the new Police Commission. This new commission would oversee what the fancy-titled electeds in city hall do with all their time.

Re: “Letters of the Week: 'Baconslut,' Single-Payer Health Care, and More

Jerry, and other people that fall for these right wind talking points, are ultimately spending a lot more money than they would be if we had a better welfare state. They'd rather be spiteful about those in dire straits than realize how much of their tax dollars go to making the rich richer, and how little those rich people pay.

Re: “Why Black Students Are Avoiding UC Berkeley

I have 2 sons, graduates of UC Berkeley & Princeton, respectively. An Ivy League education opens doors that a Berkeley education does not. Plus, several of the Ives (& Stanford) offer 'no loan' generous financial packages to all their students, regardless of race.
A black student admitted to one of those schools would have to either be crazy or scared to leave home to not take advantage of such a wonderful opportunity.
As a Cal graduate myself, I can say that Cal has always been very hard on their students. It's like a 'survival test'.
On the other hand, a school like Princeton goes out of their way to provide an encouraging environment for their students.
Cal needs to admit the next level of black students and give them good support. They aren't going to win the top black students in a bidding war with Harvard. Face it.

Re: “City of Oakland Replaces Longstanding Coliseum-Oracle Board Members With Uber Lawyer, McElhaney

it never seems to matter who is on the board. I would just like them to hold the Dubs feet to the fire. There was a lot of money paid into expanding Oracle in 97. They are obligated, take them to court. They are not going to be tenents much longer.

We are as human as you are.. Its not what you are that counts, but how you choose to be. Do you want a life full of interesting things? Do you want to have power and influence over others? Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

The loopholes in our so-called sanctuary city ate big enough to drive a couple ICE vans through. The city needs to take charge of OPD agreements and keep its promise to its residents.

Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

I am excited to try the Veg hub and live nearby. But I feel the need to correct an inaccuracy. The Veg Hub did not replace MacDonalds. The Dimond MacDonalds was in the space next door, and it did indeed close. In timing, yes the Veg Hub opened as the MacDonalds closed, but not in the same space. Point being, another fast food restaurant is likely to open up next door.
As a comment. I think it is cool that the Veg Hub has reasonable hours for workers, but they are making it difficult for customers. They do not open until noon. My wife and I would eat lunch there once a week at 11:30 if they were open then, but instead we go elsewhere. I think they miss out on early lunch business. And not being open on Fri, Sat and Sun is ridiculous for a restaurant in this location. Those would be the busiest days for a restaurant in this location. They should be closed on Mon, Tues.

Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

My partner and I were excited to try out VegHub and it was some of the best food we've ever had in the East Bay. We didn't experience ANY homophobia, or anything other than total welcoming hospitality. I consider myself an ethical vegan, too, and would never generalize or punish a business based on what I assume about their beliefs. And they are a black-owned business whose employees feel the shorter work week is humane and conducive to a more joyful life. I will support them 1) because the food is cruelty-free and INCREDIBLE. And also because we need to support businesses owned by people of color. Those reasons outweigh anything I might presume about their religious beliefs.

Re: “Inside Immigration Court: Are Deportation Hearings In The Bay Area Unconstitutional?

This well researched article is truly heartbreaking and even more so when you realize that all these unconstitutional shennanigans were happening under our constitutional lawyer president.
I hope folks that read this will support AB6 and SB3. Those bills, because they have a price tag, will have trouble making it through the leg much less getting our stingy governor's signature.

Re: “Keeping Goats in Oakland

Some people have a herd of 5 to 7 goats in the Dimond District. The walk the goats all over the neighborhood as demonstrated by long stretches of goat droppings all over the side walk. Laguna, Carmel, Delmer, Madeline, Coolidge....

The goats are cute, but if I have to pick up after my dog, then you have to clean up after your goats. Don't mean to be a killjoy, I can't walk on the sidewalk without stepping in the broad swath of pellets. Every hundred feet, hundreds of goat pellets cover the sidewalk.

My dog smells and eats the droppings. I get that stuff on my shoes.

Sorry, but it's unsanitary and unneighborly and... unacceptable.

Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

@ Andrew really ? because one of the former Pastors of the Grand Avenue Seventh-Adventist Church- who if I recall (I could be wrong) was instrumental in bringing such a restaurant to Oakland ( I recall talk about it a few years ago)- risked his ENTIRE career with a sermon about loving EVERYONE- including those in the gay community. Point-- Generalization ? Yes there are some- maybe many who are not as "progressive" in their religiosity. Some if not many ARE. You can have your beliefs based on your faith AND still love your brother and not JUDGE them on their lifestyle choice. It's not THAT difficult. My belief in scientific theories does NOT negate MY faith. Sure... some may not believe what I believe but it has NO bearing on MY relationship with God. I'm not a vegetarian- but I look forward to trying something outside of my comfort zone if it's as good as the reviewer says it is. :)

Re: “Oakland Firefighters Say Their Department Is So Badly Managed, Ghost Ship Warehouse Wasn't Even In Its Inspection Database

I am catching up on these articles now or would have commented sooner. With Fire Dept personnel earning upwards of $350K plus annually, more with benefits and overtime, there is NO excuse for not getting the job of running the department DONE. Some of the city salaries are ridiculously high where others (like teachers) are ridiculously low (and yes I know OUSD is a separate budget but these are city employees of a sort). Something must be done to address this disparity. I fully understand the inherent dangers of fire and police work but enough is enough. No wonder the city doesn't have money for other important projects, paying salaries like these.

I'm casting a vote for home grown - let's support promotion of worthy candidates from within the system. There is no need to spend a lot of scarce funding on national searches if we have strong candidates here - plus they won't have sticker shock when they have to buy a home here!
