Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
Remarkable production. Thought provoking.
Six utterly different fabulous portrayals of women and relationships told by riffing on familiar classics. Heartbreak alternates with tender connection, satire, redemption, rebellion, and outright situation comedy. A delightful way to spend an evening gasping, laughing and crying. Beautifully rendered, often surprising, intellectually absorbing,
A wonderful assort of short plays that go from an incredible portrayal of evil to really funny.
What choices would you make to take back your power?
The legendary characters of In Plain Sight will risk almost anything.
Inspired by classic tales such as Medea, Cinderella, and the Iliad, five Bay Area playwrights explore beyond the margins of your favorite stories, revealing hidden truths of gender and power. By turns harrowing and hilarious, this anthology of short plays ranges in tone from whimsical comedy to Southern Gothic.
Those Women practice Radical Hospitality: All shows are pay what you can.
This was so much fun when we did it last month. People met each other!
A new form of live entertainment has been quietly growing in the Bay Area. At least ten different true, personal storytelling shows call the East Bay their home. Have you heard of "The Moth"? Or "Snap Judgment" (both on NPR). Welcome to the newest and most fun story show yet: Spontaneous Storytelling.
Spontaneous Storytelling is an interactive event combining the fun of meeting new people with hearing and telling true, personal stories. At the beginning of the night there's a silly interactive game to get everyone mingling and talking to each other. Get curious about other people and fill up your game card.
You'll soon be thinking about all the stories you could tell. (No obligation, you're welcome to just watch and listen, too.)
Then when everyone's warmed up, we'll narrow down a theme related to everyone's favorite bar topic, dating & relationships. Using this idea as a jumping-off point, we'll tell 5-minute stories from our own life. Win drink tickets for telling a story, and prizes for meeting each other! It's a fun, casual alternative to the dating scene.
None of it's obligatory--you're welcome to just listen and enjoy. Everybody has a story about dating. If you're up for it -- come tell yours.
This is the best 'no booze - no shoes' dance in the East Bay! Great vibes, great music, and comfortable sound levels, no earplugs needed!
Hi there, I run Showga and I just wanted to let you know that Showga is on Wednesdays now, not Mondays. Same time. Same location. And it's now $15-30. Thanks!
Great Venue for music and comedy!
In “Wild Like Wanting”, Emma Webster refashions traditional landscape painting and allows a fresh discourse with the unknown to enter the work. Her free-form idyllic scenes explore communion with nature in an attempt to find answers about the creative and sublime.
The artworks hearken to a romantic age, when we searched for inspiration, meaning, and transcendence in nature. Within Webster’s verdant greens we find mystery, danger, and temptation, both savage and familiar. Like the shock of awe itself, the atmospheric scenes are unknowable and inhospitable.
“Wild Like Wanting”’s abstract tapestries are magnets that pull subjective imagery and colors into the space through the veiled force of painting. Yearning to fill the void – resolve answers – certain horror vaccui fuels the paintings, which are saturated with expressive marks and remnants of the artist.
We uncover visual windows within the paintings, and unable to resolve what lies beyond these portals, we are left to linger at their thresholds—projecting our imaginations onto what lies beyond.
