Re: “Two Highly Touted Oakland Charter Schools Quickly Closed, Now Owe the District Money

Nice to learn about the charter school hedge fund-like operation. I think charter or public, schools cannot be expected to fix all of societies ills. Want to improve educational outcomes? Give families free preschool, decent housing, jobs, healthcare, etc. After all, socioeconomic status is the best predictor of educational outcomes. Not that poor students can't learn - they just need the same basics as anyone else to allow learning to happen. So, with our limited resources as a community, what is the best, most effective use of our resources to equitably educate all our precious children? Public education is not perfect, but it gets my vote for the choice that at least has democratically elected leadership that the public can hold accountable.

Re: “We’re Still Working: The Art of Sex Work At SOMArts

Can sex workers be artists? You ask. That is a really ridiculous and outdated question. Lots of sex workers are artists. Sex work is a bigger funder of the arts than the NEA, which will likely be ended by the Trump Admin. Looking forward to tonights show. PS--I was a prostitute and porn star 22 years full time. I'm proud to say I'm one of the artists in Documenta 14, the biggest most important art expo in the world. (Kassel Germany). There is a long history of artists who did sex work-Karen Finley, Maya Angelou, Diamonda Galas... So this question in fact has definitely been answered. YES. Sex workers can be artists.

Re: “To Undermine Sanctuary Cities, Trump Orders Cuts for Lead Safety, Homeless Shelters, Childcare, Many Other Programs

According to Professor Bill Hing at the USF School (who was interviewed last evening on NPR/KQED) the only money Trump can touch is related to security related concerns. There are laws which govern what types of monies can be withheld by the president. Because immigration falls under Homeland Security only funding for policing, security, etc can be withheld.

But, I suppose we'll see....

Also they're not allowed to leave the US since they're carrying around somebody else's ID and SS#.

Re: “To Undermine Sanctuary Cities, Trump Orders Cuts for Lead Safety, Homeless Shelters, Childcare, Many Other Programs

I know a guy who came here illegally from Mexico who had to go through a rigorous process of getting into the US within a Mexican human trafficking group. He said majority of those trafficked through the US are indeed gangbangers but I'll save that story for another time. Once they arrive to a border town (between US/MEXICO) somebody from the black market provides them with a social security # and ID from some random average Joe in the US. This allows them to have access to these clinics/healthcare and other benefits we legal citizens receive. I

Re: “To Undermine Sanctuary Cities, Trump Orders Cuts for Lead Safety, Homeless Shelters, Childcare, Many Other Programs

Teddy how does illegals have anything to do with these programs? When you're not documented or how you like to call it illegal you CAN'T get any assistance unless you have a social security number these are federally funded programs. People with a mentality like yours is what's wrong with our country!!!!!! You're justifying these cuts as sending illegals back you're so ignorant and uneducated. These cuts affect poor people and those in so much need like our senior citizens. Oh wait let me guess the money is better used building a wall.. oh wait Trump said we'd get reimbursed by the Mexican government which is total lies!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: “To Undermine Sanctuary Cities, Trump Orders Cuts for Lead Safety, Homeless Shelters, Childcare, Many Other Programs

Well, he does believe that torture works! The only worse thing he could do for Oakland is to erect billboards of his face posted all over the city - that stupid-looking face would be enough to keep illegals and legals alike from coming here.
Bill Wylie - just follow the rules of etiquette and stop shouting your ignorant and grammatically incorrect drivel!

Re: “Were Oakland Police's Tactics Against Anti-Trump Protesters 'Excessive'?

No one got hurt and only a few fools vandalized the city and nobody had their business or car smashed to bits. For a change, Oakland had a powerful and peaceful assembly. Everyone I know who participated thought it was great and felt safe. I'm one of many Oaklanders who went to DC to march. There was a general unease among many of us from the Bay Area that Oakland would get out of hand and provide Trump with ugly, unruly evidence against those who oppose his agenda. Thank you to everyone who came out and made our city proud and to the cops who safeguarded her citizens and streets.

Re: “To Undermine Sanctuary Cities, Trump Orders Cuts for Lead Safety, Homeless Shelters, Childcare, Many Other Programs

This is hardly shocking. These are programs that the GOP hates and thus would have been cut anyway.
Couple this with the fact that California, overwhelmingly, voted against the thin skinned, petulant, narcissistic, snowflake in chief and one could argue that such reprisals were inevitable.

Re: “Protesters Join Hands Around Lake Merritt in Oakland to Protest Trump, Hate Crimes

IT DOES NOT MATTER, HOW MUCH, THEY PROTEST, OR WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY. WHILE OBAMA WAS DESTROYING THE USA, WE FOUGHT HIM, USING THE LAWS & THE COURTS, & HE COULD NOT, BE STOPPED!!! ...BECAUSE HE WAS "THE PRESIDENT"....
YOU CAN DO NOTHING NOW, TO STOP PRESIDENT TRUMP.
HE IS, GOING TO MAKE, AMERICA, GREAT AGAIN!!! ... AND YOU, WILL NOT, UNDERSTAND, HOW THIS WILL WORK OUT, UNTIL
AFTER IT HAS BEEN DONE; BECAUSE YOU LIBERAL PEOPLE ARE COMPLETELY IGNORANT REGARDING HOW A NATION, MUST OPERATE AS A WHOLE IN ORDER FOR IT TO THRIVE AND TO SURVIVE...OK? GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Re: “To Undermine Sanctuary Cities, Trump Orders Cuts for Lead Safety, Homeless Shelters, Childcare, Many Other Programs

JUST FOLLOW OUR USA LAWS AND SEND THE ILLEGAL'S BACK TO THEIR OWN COUNTRY'S AND THE CITIES WILL GET THEIR MONEY; THE LAW OF THE USA MUST NOT BE BROKEN BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE WANT TO BREAK IT
BECAUSE IT SUITS THEIR OWN PURPOSES...THE LAW IS THE LAW FOR
EVERYONE...

Re: “Two Highly Touted Oakland Charter Schools Quickly Closed, Now Owe the District Money

The charter extremists spent big money to defeat me and the 3 other challengers to the GO Advocates dominated board and management.

Here we are in the same school year and we have the budget in a mess, the superintendent job hopping and poor charter oversight reaping it's rewards.

All of this was said before and during the election, but reporting has been scarce.

Where have Cat Brooks and KPFA been? The other media? Local news needs to report on local government and except for Darwin, it hardly does.

Re: “Ambushed: Contra Costa County Law Enforcement Sets Up Surprise Stings To Help Federal Immigration Agents Arrest and Deport Immigrants

I guess the threshold for deportation cooperation should be raised really really high. What should we raise it to? Armed bank robbery, rape, arson of a residence? Apparently some people think multiple "minor" crimes are not enough to allow cooperation with ICE.
If I was undocumented I'd be unusually careful about obeying the law.
How hard is that to do.... I don't know, but I've gone 60+ years without an arrest. I guess its not that difficult.
BTW, according to the data in the most recent ICE annual report, if you are one of the 11 million undocumented, and you have not been convicted of a serious crime, your chances of being deported from the "interior" (25 or more miles from the border) of the USA, are in any given year, one in 700.
Yes, the data shows only one person in 700 gets deported as long as they have not been convicted of a serious crime.
Meaning for most who don't commit crimes, their chances of being deported during a entire 35 year working career, are about 1 in 20.
Essentially next to zero deportations unless you are involved in criminal activity.
Say what you want, that is what the data shows.
No need for most undocumented to be "living in the shadows" like we hear about in the news. Those living a crime free life, are all but free from deportation.
I seriously doubt even Trump is going to be deporting them.
