I remember asking him once do you hate hate? Yes he replied. Kind of a double negative isn't it? I hate your double negatives!

He was truly a Berkeley character!

Re: “State Sen. Nancy Skinner: Latest Fatal Oakland Fire Was 'Preventable'

@Anika, if what you said were correct (which is not borne out by copious evidence), then the property owner could have still made repairs anytime prior to the new provisions coming in on February 2017. And had there truly been an inability for the property owner to make the necessary repairs and still realize a positive net operating income, he could have petitioned for a hardship waiver. As the article states, allegedly there were numerous code complaints from tenants over a number of years, but the property owner elected to do nothing.

Re: “There's zero chance the Oakland Raiders move to Las Vegas (if they do, I'll sport a Mark Davis bowl cut for a week)

So will you keep your promise and get the hair cut? it's also funny reading these comments of people being so certain the Raiders wouldn't move. You were all wrong.

Re: “Corporate Beer Overlords AB InBev To Open Golden Road 'Craft' Beer Garden in North Oakland

To be fair AB InBev can do whatever they want, but they should identify them selves, as they can open a local business that never technically need to make money. For this reason I am not a fan of false flag craft breweries as they effectively seal market share from actual homegrown businesses.

The permitting application can be seen here:
To share your comments on the permitting process contact:
Planner Rebecca Lind at (510)238-3472 or by email: or district 1 councilman Dan Kalb Phone: (510) 238-7001 Email: addressing Bureau of Planning/Zoning case #: PLN17004 : the proposed beer garden by Golden Road at 320,322, 330, 40th street Oakland.

The public comment period ends tomorrow 4/3/17.

Re: “The Beat Won’t Go On: Chicago Landlord Evicts Coffee With A Beat, Longtime Adams Point Shops

I used to have a weekly Spanish group at the cafe and I remember how Justin would accommodate us. I remember being so happy to see myself every Sunday I came. I saw myself in the staff of Coffee with a Beat. When we talk about trauma and loss, this truly represents it. I am hurt, angry, sad. What struck me the most about the article is that Mr. Nate cannot pass this cafe-legacy down to his sons.

Re: “The Beat Won’t Go On: Chicago Landlord Evicts Coffee With A Beat, Longtime Adams Point Shops

Fourteen years ago, on the morning of the first day after we moved to Adam's Point, my husband, Joseph, and I walked down Perkins Street and got a coffee at Coffee With a Beat. Nate was the very first person we met in the neighborhood, the first person to make us feel welcome here. Nate, his family, and Coffee With a Beat have been the warm, vibrant center of this neighborhood for 16 years, and I know I'm not the only person around here who is genuinely sickened by this loss. Shame on Laramar Group and the greedy, soul-less companies like it. Shame on them all. What we are losing here is so much more than simply a coffee shop; we are losing the heart of our neighborhood; we are losing part of our family.

Re: “West Oakland Fire Survivors Say City's Response Is Unacceptable and Victim Assistance Is Lacking

"Some positions in the fire prevention bureau, including the job of fire marshal and assistant fire marshal, were already funded, going on years. The city's administration simply failed to hire for the jobs."

Sounds a lot like the Trump administration which doesn't think that Secretaries of the various Departments need their regular staffing.

The Department of State for example is 'way understaffed so that some observers think that important diplomatic opportunities may be missed with the result that military action would get more emphasis.

If the Fire Prevention Bureau is short-staffed, an Oakland administration might expect more people could die in fires.

Guess what happened.

Re: “Pardoned 'Crack King' Darryl Reed Says He Wants To Unite Oakland Neighborhoods

As a "Returning Citizen" aka Formerly Incarcerated man from Oakland, & personal friend of Darryl Reed, Too Short, & sever others in attendance at what I considereda monumental event, because I know that Darryl feels that his actions of the 80's led to what's happening with the younger generations, & the violence not just in the Bay Area, but throughout the country is a result of all of our actions when we were their age. Darryl & several other Returning Citizens choose to find what are the best practices & models that will reduce this youth violence. I have chosen to find additional resources for those that are Formerly Incarcerated & who still are that want to continue on with their education. Or from incarceration to institutions of higher education. In essence, those of us who have made mistakes, & have paid our debts to society want to contribute back to society in a positive way.

Respectively Yours,
LaMont "Monty" Jackson

Re: “Eating Chinatown: A Walkable Guide to Oakland's Most Delicious Neighborhood

No love for Shooting Star Cafe and Pacific Renaissance Plaza's Gum Kuo and the new and improved Cafe 88? Also, Saint Anna's best kept secret is their Hong Kong style sizzling plate steak set dinners which are served all day. They cost much less than what you usually pay at Outback, Texas Roadhouse or Black Angus but twice as good.

Re: “The Beat Won’t Go On: Chicago Landlord Evicts Coffee With A Beat, Longtime Adams Point Shops

We keep making more people. If we don't keep making more places for them to live, shop, and do business, the non-wealthy will keep getting pushed out. It's not like we don't know how to make more homes or how to make more places for business. We just keep choosing not to. Why do we stop making new buildings? To hurt rich people? It just makes the current landowners richer. The culture of Oakland, the culture of the whole Bay Area, does not come from keeping the same exact buildings everywhere. The culture comes from the people. We keep making more people. We better start making more places for those people to live and work.

Re: “The Beat Won’t Go On: Chicago Landlord Evicts Coffee With A Beat, Longtime Adams Point Shops

I'm so sad to hear this. I didn't go hear often - but I can honestly say it was one of my favorite places in the Bay Area. This is the kind of business that every community needs. This is what every business in every community should feel like. In all of the gentrification stories I hear - this one feels very symbolic of what Oakland's losing.

Re: “The Beat Won’t Go On: Chicago Landlord Evicts Coffee With A Beat, Longtime Adams Point Shops

I actually revived my debating chops down in what I called pit which was at the lower level of the shop.

There was always a lively discussion going and all people and topics where welcomed.

Besides the lively debates I also was able to lobby and influence some of older cats not only to consider but to actually accept some of things that represented my particular cohort (after slapping them tons of empirical evidence and YouTube videos).

One the things that I was looking forward to with my new work schedule was getting back in pit, this time to brush up on being a wise-ass.

Nate, Joyce, Nate Jr and Justin were more than just family who ran the shop they were family to all who showed up which why they were not just open on Thanksgiving, New Years day and Christmas but they served home cooked holiday meals with all the trimmings free charge so that the Coffee With A Beat Family could do what family does.

The highest and best to all y'all!

Re: “Will Oakland Become First U.S. City To Ditch Wall Street And Establish A Public Bank?

The real issue here is that municipalities, regions, states and even the nation establish Public Banks to serve the needs of the 99%. The usual pro-business anti-socialist, pro-capitalists protect their pyramid scheme turf because they stand to loose their privilege to wealth and may have to actually compete with talent equally enabled. The US banking system is a private system enforced by a government controlled by Bankster1%. This is why we now face crisis upon crisis as the 1% just cannot get the idea that a truly free market enabled to EVERYONE equally policed by the people's government can establish a fair system with nominal loan and savings interest for EVERYONE. Money is the property of the people, created through OUR authority allowing banks to manufacture it 10x+ held assets. It is now time we assume this authority for the 99%, under the scrutiny of the people for people. The profits are rolled back into more loans and savings interest securing the Public Commons with a future.

Oh and now we must hear the whining R1%CH and their sycophant wanna bees protecting profit turf with the usual ungrounded fear-mongering and cries of "socialism". Socialism? Like fully self-funded SS and Medicare (no matter what they say this is a fact)? Yes... and let's get on it!

"Too Short" welcomes this man who ruined countless lives. TS, you recall, was appointed a career counselor by the Youth UpRising agency (where Jean Quan kicked off her mayoral campaign).
