Re: “News Media Ignores Black Protests

Protesters are in the news, have the public's attention. How about some productive suggestions on what's next. Sit downs with members of city government to discuss the issues? Citizen boards from different neighborhoods working together? What can be done on both sides to implement positive change.

Re: “West Oakland Councilmember Involved in House-Flipping Scheme

Its obvious BondGraham, Wiston and Gammon are irked that LGM is beholden only to he constituents, is able to think for herself, and has yet to kowtow to the white knights of "progressivism" over at EBX, but let's consider this:

If LGM's nonprofit lent money to Reese to refurbish homes, and Reese spent that money on hookers and cocaine, would EBXs headline be "COUNCILMEMBER INVOLVED IN HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND DRUG DEALING"?

No. Why? Because that would be a simple "transgression" that all readers would understand, and no rationale person would hold LGM responsible for what Reese did with the money he was trusted to invest.

BondGraham loves reporting about real-estate investments, is that its a complicated enough businesses that you can pepper with innuendo and suspicion that readers will eventually forget what the accusation is and just be upset that someone else is making off better than themselves (I mean, what did that long segment on Reese's history have anything to do with anyway?)

And when you cant prove any motive for LGM because she did not benefit from whatever Reese did, you use her salary for running a nonprofit as a motive?

We know that EBX believes your average BART employee is entitled to making $175,000/ year, unlimited sick time, and a pension and healthcare plan paid for by taxpayers, but if LGM wants to pay herself something equivalent (without the pension and healthcare benefits, something EBX considers "middle class" when talking about BART workers) for providing a benefit to low income residents , then that is somehow beyond the pale? Who is the hypocrite now?

EBX should be ashamed of themselves.

Re: “President Obama Signs 'Ceasefire' in War on Medical Marijuana

Now it's time for local and state elected officials as well as journalists and activists to pressure local U.S attorneys in all 4 California districts for a definitive answer regarding medical cannabis attacks. U.S attorneys slithered off the hook after Cole 2013 memo. Thank you David. CP Divinity Tree

Re: “The Fight For Safer Surgeries at Highland Hospital

@an_american, I was questioning the veracity and truthfulness of your statement.

Per the article, Highland was asked for a comment and REFUSED?

If they had a defensible position, wouldn't they state it?

Highland also refused to comment on their over priced and faulty EHR system. Now, according to the Oakland Tribune Articles (links following), a third party auditor has found rampant financial mismanagement. Again a problem originating with those steering the ship. It would seem to be a common pattern?

I have a pattern of advocating for patient safety that isn't debatable.

I have upwards of one hundred documents spanning 26.5 years at Highland where I question, comment and try to facilitate safer and better healthcare practices for my patients.

Additionally, over 60 co-workers (doctors, nurses, techs) organized and presented a letter of support to CMO Peruzzi within days of my unfair termination stating that I always advocated for my patients and "refused to stay quiet." There are five anesthesiologists in this legal action, I'm clearly not alone in my thinking.

Re: “West Oakland Councilmember Involved in House-Flipping Scheme

So, a profiteering Black councilwoman can do no wrong? How many people do any of us know who gets a HUGE raise to line their nest? Shame! If she wants to profit by flipping houses for profit, then do it as a private profit motivated citizen, and leave the pontificating about the plight of people to find affordable housing only to profit from their misfortune. The councilwoman obviously does not know the first thing about PUBLIC service, but know a lot about PRIVATE gain.

Re: “The Fight For Safer Surgeries at Highland Hospital

@an_american-I will use my name unlike yourself, always suspect?

This was NOT an emergency case, and it was during the day on July 1st so I'm confused as how you profess to know "the other side of the story" if your version happened at night?

This was a patient who was being supervised in the hospital EXPERTLY by NURSING and was called for by the "operating room efficiency coordinator" BEFORE there was anyone (nursing or doctors) to take charge and MONITOR the patient for the sake of "efficiency."

This translates to MONEY OVER PATIENT SAFETY. My oath was "do no harm"

IT WAS NOT : "do only a little harm" or worse yet, "forgo the rules(designed to protect the patient) and regulations for the almighty buck"

What oath did you take?

The "paper work" you so easily dismiss consisted of drug and post op orders for the last patient I had had in surgery and whom I was wheeling into PACU.

There is no paperwork that an anesthesiologist completes that is useless or non-essential?

Are you insinuating that once the "sewing" happens the patient is good to go?

I would guess that the entire PACU staff would disagree with that idea?

You are implying that there is such a thing as "drive through" medicine and that my previous patient is inconsequential to YOUR patient?

Patients are people, they are not numbers and they are not to ever be treated as if they were on an assembly line!

The life saving operation was done AFTER this patient was properly optimized for surgery so they could SURVIVE the surgery and after they had signed all their LEGALLY REQUIRED consents.

You are correct, there are MULTIPLE sides to EVERY story-this article tip-toed AROUND some of the more horrific aspects of the patient safety issues at Highland.

Your comment has only re-inforced my belief that while I have taught 1000's of residents and worked with hundreds of good or great doctors at Highland that there are some current people steering the proverbial ship whom do not practice good medicine or provide patient centric care.

There is no excuse for this behavior and it should never be tolerated, let alone encouraged.

Re: “The McClymonds Football Nightmare

This is ridiculous. It makes me sick to my stomach that the CIF commissioner would even push this issue. Cut these damn kids a break...you already ruled the QB kid ineligible...why break the rest of the teams heart? Cruel.

Re: “Why You Should Support the Protests

I support the protests. Cops have long used excessive force, killing old ladies with potato peelers from a distance, and such.

I think the police reform should go even further. The rules should restrict escalation. That is, a raised fist, or even a brick should not be met with a shot to the head. Even further, police should always obey the same rules they enforce against us. For example, no speeding and stop sign running.

Re: “Oakland Named the Most Diverse City in America

Thank you East Bay Express for printing this article. The San Francisco-centric media still has not published this ranking which places Oakland as the most diverse city in the United States.

If this had been a "most dangerous city" ranking, the San Francisco-centric media would have given it top billing. Since Oakland is #1 while San Francisco in only #9 in this ranking, the San Francisco-centric media refuse to publish this ranking.

To be fair, the "Oakland" Tribune which is owned by the same folks who own and publish the San Jose Mercury News has also completely ignored this most diverse city ranking for Oakland. As a matter of fact, Tammerlin Drummond of the San Jose Tribune is still writing about homicides in Oakland in a year where homicides along with robberies and residential burglaries are down.

The East Bay Express is a breath of fresh air in a time of a selective corporate media who loves to define Oakland to the World on their terms. Thank goodness for EBX and social media or Oakland would still be struggling to get out from the collective and oppressive thumb of the San Francisco biased corporate media.

Re: “News Media Ignores Black Protests

Thank you for creating some media coverage equity. Great article - the listing off the names - was not of black men and women - it was of black women, men and children. Please add that black children are victims of targeted police/state violence as well. Thank you.

"Gibson McElhaney and her board members more than doubled her executive salary in 2008, raising it from $80,000 to $193,000. In 2009, Gibson McElhaney was paid $134,000."

Yep, a true advocate for the poor sharing with other poor people all the problems of making ends meet on a tiny income.
