Re: “Stopping a Climate Change and Pollution Nightmare in the East Bay

Cap and trade means that folks who live near forests in Maine breathe clean air so Richmond refineries can use those cap and trade credits to continue to force Richmond inhabitants to breathe refinery toxics. And the rest of the Bay Area is subjected to the TONS of toxic emissions from the refineries.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is responsible for air quality here--cap and trade is irrelevant to Air District mission. Let Chevron get credits for reducing greenhouse gases HERE--and then their neighbors can avoid breathing all the other toxins. The Air District Board is made up of elected officials--let them know we want the Board to direct Air District staff that it is past time to put an enforceable limit on refinery emissions in the Bay Area.

Re: “LocoL is Fast Food with Heart and Soul

Sam-profit is good. The only obligation of a business is to obey the law-health codes, minimum wage requirements, and pay taxes to the minimum levels needed and make a return for their investors. Their menu, their locations, and their slogans is their own business, not the damn government's or these elusive "communities" people proclaim. I'm a teacher- don't eat out much, but like simple and low priced food.

had dinner there last night, olivetos, with my family! Bravissimo! Incredible meats, pastas, etc. For a special occasion or just for the hell of it, this is the place to go. Very nice and quiet upstairs with terrific service. That young chef, jonah, cooks beyond his years.

Re: “East Bay Environmentalists at Odds Over Future of Eucalyptus Trees

It doesnt seem like this story has changed much since the last time it was reported on. Eucalyptus may not be native, but there's very little hard evidence to suggest they should shoulder the blame for the firestorm's devastation. The biggest factor was almost certainly the failure to clear rooftops of accumulated dry brush and the build up of shrubbery next to houses, which caused the fire to spread extremely rapidly, torching houses in its path. It takes a lot of heat for eucalyptus crowns to burn, and had the houses been adequately maintained, the fire could have been managed with far less damage. There's also evidence which suggests that Eucalyptus are naturally fire-resistant below a temperature threshold. On top of that, had Berkeley and Oakland firefighters used the same size plugs for their water hoses, they would have been far more effective at stopping the fire. In any event, clear-cutting 100,000's of trees without a reforestation plan and widely using pesticides doesnt sound like environmental conservation to me.

How about the employees buy it? Like they did at Zachary's...

Clearly Danny Hipps is unhappy about having to pay his drywall employees in Carlsbad anything close to a living wage.

Re: “Mama’s Royal Cafe Is for Sale

As a former Mama's worker and someone who got his start in the restaurant business there cleaning the kitchen, I'm happy to read that George wants to find an owner who really understands the ambiance and vibe of this place.

I want to thank George M, Spencer Moore II, Julie Moore, and George Russell, for having the imagination, pioneering spirit, and perseverance that breathed life into this incredible restaurant initially, and to Mr. Marino and everyone who's worked there to sustain it over the years.

My life would not be the same without you!!!

Re: “LocoL is Fast Food with Heart and Soul

I'm really confused about what their "revolution" means...

Is it a stretch to think they are using vague positive, social slogans to simply push their brand? How well would a new low production cost fast-food franchise do these days, especially in CA without dropping vague slogans like "building community", "empowering", and so forth? What do they actually mean? My guesses:

It seems like they kinda use Republican "job creator" rhetoric as one of their benefits. What's going on here is that you are paying people to make profit for you. If this was purely about "community", you'd use a cooperative ownership model. But, nah, it is about profit...even if they pay their workers slightly more than minimum wage.

Next, you dropped one of your initial locations in arguably the most white, gentrified area in Oakland (a block from the new Uber HQ). There are loads of restaurants affordable to techies and hospital execs who live and work around here. If part of Locol's mission is about solving the food desert issue, why build one of your few locations in one of the richest parts of the Bay Area?

The whole line about "teaching job skills" is also bogus. Every company from Walmart to TGI Fridays acts like employees who are underpaid and don't benefit from profit sharing are actually "developing job skills" or whatever. Bogus corporate sloganeering that actually means "you are benefiting from exploitation."

Not selling sodas, and the political discussion on "soda taxes" is paternalistic and frequently has racist undertones. Another item that I wouldn't say is suspect at best and far from "revolutionary."

Without any clear benefit to any of the Bay Area's most deserving communities, their "revolution" seems like nothing more than to make the owners rich. Revolutionizing their pocket books.

Re: “Oakland, Developers Look to Convert SRO Housing into Boutique Hotels

SRO's keep people sheltered and housed, tourists feel at ease, doorways are not crashpads, streets are cleaner, the city stays income-diverse. SRO's have a bad rep, but renting rooms at affordable rates to us working poor is a real civic benefit. IF the owners could maintain cleaner and more functional buildings, they would attract more young working people and artists of all ages. It's true many down-and-out folks rent in SRO's, but with this displacement going on, you can also rent to people who have good rental history and steady income who make responsible tenants -these are folks getting priced out of the Bay Area who could get a foothold in an SRO.

Re: “Mama's Royal Cafe Is for Sale

Hey Mitchell, my understanding is that the Full House chef has since moved onto Miliki (whose own future is a big question mark). But yes, Marino said he wants to find a new owner who will keep the staff — though of course it may be impossible to guarantee it.

Re: “Mama's Royal Cafe Is for Sale

Has he held onto the former chef from the Full House Café? Any talk of whether the staff (as well as the recipes) might be part of the package when he sells?

That's what happens when you have it your heart and soul and decided to spend your silver years with your the person you love and that has been by your side supporting you. Danny Hippo I don't think it is about a $3.25 minimum wage hike.

This is what happens when you hike minimum wage from $9 to $12.25 overnight.
