Why was he hit in the face with a pie????
Why are people supporting a sexual misconduct scumbag? And a pie in the face equals beating the shit out of someone? Disagree. You're all just internet thug toughguys.
Wasting a perfectly good pie on a basketball goon. What a crime.
Three cheers for the mayor. About time guys like this 32 year old idiot got a knuckle sandwich. He's lucky he wasn't shot during the assault.
That is what the Secret Service would have done if Obama was being attacked.
Why the nutty double standard by a few too many posters here?
Seems they condone physical assaults when you don't agree with someone.
Thing about the past and living an improper life it is gives one a chance to champion those behaviors and lead a proper life. Those who have remained improper will remain in the past with those behaviors and accursed of all those who have changed.
Kevin Johnson should be in prison for sexual abusing a teenager but just like your beloved cops public officials always gets away with crime committed.
Karma will eventually bust mofo Kevin Johnson in the face.
All right by me. Disrupting a community, non-political event, assaulting the mayor? Need to discourage this type of behavior. Good job, Mr Mayor.
Mayor was hit first & then verbally disrespected or abused perhaps, thus he had a right to defend himself. Did he go too far, I don't know. The person is still alive & has no broken limbs or broken bones right? If u step like a man & step up to another man like this person did, well, then he got treated like a man!
I've got a pie for you. Let's discuss what a proper response is to being assaulted.
Pie to the face aint shit homie, if they did that to one of the vatos be more then blood shed be getting jumped and head smashed like pimpkin . The mayor went easy for a public disrespect street charge
They guy gets a pie in the face and that gives him The right to bear the crap out of the protester? A pie in the face doesn't equal 12 punches. I'm sorry it doesn't, then again one of our presidential candidates is trump..
Anyone who assaults a public official should be prepared to pay the price. In this case you might get a bloody nose.
Good on the Mayor. Anyone can say something, but this "Protestor" attacked him, and that was not a wise move.
Welcome to the farm to fist capitol!
The face of Sacramento, covered in a cream pie.
That's my mayor!
Wow. I have had ulcerative colitis for 30 years. I asked my GI Doctor about this. He said that right now the cost is prohibitive because my insurance company would not pay for the donor testing. How did you do it at home?
Thank you, Nastia, for documenting yet another great loss of authentic culture in Oakland...The article ends with there being only one sure thing: that until market forces change, Oakland's underground scene will also keep going into the ground...Well...there might be one other sure thing:
Oakland has deep roots in organizing!
And that is what we'll need to do to help remind our political leaders that "WHEN there is a will, there IS a way" to preserve our culture, to ensure affordability, and to prevent more displacement.
I lost our shared space when our rent went up 40% and also closed at the end of this July. But for the the past year, our neighborhood artists and business owners have been figuring out how we can create Cultural Arts Districts that might skip street banners and go straight to regulations and incentives that preserve what's unique about Oakland.
We're at the start of forming a city-wide effort to get these policies into place, like cultural zoning overlays and development guidelines for developers who, BTW, don't make much money on ground floor uses anyway, to really do something different to provide opportunity and access to spaces that remain affordable.
Plenty of other cities and states have succeeded. (SOHO and DUMBO are NOT good examples, but Seattle is doing something interesting!)
So 2 THINGS YOU CAN DO: please check out this petition that supports creating a cultural arts district in Uptown and asks the City to create a task force for Cultural Arts Districts for ALL NEIGHBORHOODS in Oakland. The more people who participate and get involved, the more chance we have at moving from policy recommendations to policy ACTION.
The CA Arts Council is going around the state to get input from folks on how to roll out a statewide framework for Cultural Arts Districts! (How about that??) They're coming to Oakland:

I am deeply concerned about what gentrification is doing to our city- the people and our cultures. I manager the Niebyl Proctor Community Library at 6501 Telegraph here in North Oakland. I would like to help with making our spaces available. We are a non-profit and we do charge a fraction of the rental rates around here. Feel free to reach out to us at (510) 595-7417 or (510) 290-5595 ask for Brotha Clark or Mama Cassie.
