Re: “Mid-Week Menu: R.I.P. Genova Deli

Genova's Deli is mediocre at best for the outrageous rip off prices paid for a sandwich with hardly any meat and just a pinch of veggies, so you pay $9 for the bread. Their lowest price per pound for sliced deli meats is $17! Raviolis are tasty but mostly pasta dough and sauce is good but a medium sized container is like $20! Total con artist scam going on at all their locations especially walnut creek. Another rip off example is all their prepared dishes or soups. One of the last time I bought a chicken tortellini soup for $12, it didn't have any chicken, not one piece! Freakin people give you nothing and empty your wallet! I do see the workers giving heaping portions on orders to their friends near closing time and some people didn't pay either! I hate Genova's and would never go there again and don't recommend it to anyone unless you like being robbed! They were probably good at one time and now use and abuse that past reputation to get away with robbing people and so many stupid idiots wait in line for hours for a piece of shot sandwich!

Re: “AS B-Dama's Chicken Paitan Ramen Is the Perfect Antidote to Winter

Keizo Shimamoto once wrote that tori paitan broth just meant "boiling the dickens out of chickens."

I've had good versions in SF at Kirimachi and Mensho Tokyo.

Re: “Oakland's Toxic Lead Contamination Isn't in the Water. It's in the Buildings and Dirt, and It's Bad.

Have facts ever mattered to EBX? The comparisons to Flint is false and unethical. Tens of thousands of kids were tested in Flint... in Oakland ~500. Those samples are not comparable. Yes, the fact that Fruitvale is a hot spot matters, but Oakland as a whole is not like Flint. Reuters didn't even mention Oakland in its report -not once. While ~5% of nearly *all* children in Flint had elevated levels, several Flint zip codes (where thousands of kids were tested) showed +8% and +10% of children with high lead levels! In just one zip code in Flint 8,000 children were tested (Fruitvale ~500) and over 10% of those Flint children had elevated lead levels! That is not the case in Oakland. If Darwin had bothered to mull over the data he'd have noticed that more kids tested with elevated lead levels in SF's Southeast districts than did in Oakland. But please, please drag the spotlight away from deserving communities to sell ads or whatever.

Re: “Poetry Express Readings

Featured readers are often well awarded and published poets, yet the sessions in a private room in the restaurant are receptive and this is a good place for Open Mic where even a 1st-time reader can feel comfortable among the more established voices.

Re: “Casey Affleck A Misfit Again in Manchester By The Sea

This Review is spot on! The movie was hideous; and what's all this "but that's what life is about" commentary? Really? I thought the movie showed the Lonergan/Damon/Afleck disdain for New Englanders, by heaping absurd amounts of tragedy in winter blizzard fashion. It was a ridiculous film that over did every aspect, including the cheesy interjections of stark New England coastal scenery. Yuck!

Re: “Barry Jenkins Walks Out in the Moonlight

This is the best picture I have seen in 2016. It is kinda holy, in addition to being superbly written, acted and directed. Like life itself, its all about love. I've seen it twice so far and will likely buy it when it is available for sale. I am glad we are seeing more and more films about black lives. Now show me some Latino stories and Asian stories. Please.

Re: “Casey Affleck A Misfit Again in Manchester By The Sea

Saw the movie last night and did not enjoy it. What are all those nuances allegedly missed? This was raw, profane entertainment??? Hard to find enough redeeming qualities to overcome the reasons to tell this story. As a movie it succeeded in moving me to tears but it is too close to life to take me out of it or show me a part with which I am unfamiliar. Character development is good.

I am a 71 year old man who has bladder cancer. I have been using cannabis oil for over a year and my cancer has not spread, and in fact, the tumor has shrunk in size. My doctor told me that if I did not have my bladder removed and do chemo I would be dead in 12 - 18 months, and that was 2 years ago and I am going strong.

Re: “Casey Affleck A Misfit Again in Manchester By The Sea

Wow. This review glosses over everything that's deep and real and beautiful in this stellar movie. Who cares if the lead actor often portrays characters who are in pain? Manchester By the Sea focuses on what matters most in life, unlike this vapid, meaningless review.

I will happily pay to get an MMJ card but I am from out of state. Any suggestions on where to go or who could help with questions. Just a mom wanting to have a reduced pain day to go do Disney with my family.

Re: “Oakland's Toxic Lead Contamination Isn't in the Water. It's in the Buildings and Dirt, and It's Bad.

A ground breaking lead paint liability lawsuit was won by several Cali governments a couple years ago based on lead in paint that's a primary cause of childhood lead poisoning. The companies Kelly More, Du Pont, BP and others were supposed to fund remediation programs in the state to rid houses of lead paint.

Re: “Oakland's Toxic Lead Contamination Isn't in the Water. It's in the Buildings and Dirt, and It's Bad.

So sad building owners of the past chose to use lead house paint in the Fruitvale area. Not like in the rest of oakland where they had the foresight to use only lead free paints.
