Re: “Alameda Sheriff Deputy's Arrest of Street Fruit Vendor Goes Viral and Draws Criticism

He is violating the law. No license or permit is a violation of law. Police officers take an oath to enforce all laws so if one enforces the against a fruit vendor he is doing his sworn duty. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT GET THE LAWS CHANGED, OTHERWISE STUFF IT.

Re: “Alameda Sheriff Deputy's Arrest of Street Fruit Vendor Goes Viral and Draws Criticism

These sidewalk fruit vendors are not self employed. They are working for a company that drives them to different locations normally on weekends to sell fruit. I live in Sacramento and there is one here every weekend. He told me he is driven here each weekend from the Oakland area to sell fruit. He is picked up each evening and brought back the following morning. He sits out in the sun all day until his ride comes for him.

They'll have to explain how a lemonade stand operated by two ten year olds doesn't do the same thing. Both "crimes" are identical.

Re: “Alameda Sheriff Deputy's Arrest of Street Fruit Vendor Goes Viral and Draws Criticism

Once again, if you are poor, brown or black, you are an easy target for the system to remind you that you need to stay in your place. I remember when "taco trucks" were viewed like this guy, nothing more than health, zoning and business license violators who should be cited and harassed. Then, young white chef's, who could not afford to lease commercial spaces, copied the food truck concept. The response of the system was that it was a new exciting culinary alternative sweeping the nation. Cities quickly wrote ordinances allowing them and renamed them "food trucks". Every day in America, young brown and black men are given lengthy jail terms for marijuana related offenses. At the same time, white "venture capitalists" are making so much money growing and selling marijuana that they have no place to put all the cash. The same federal laws apply to both. For the last 50 years, heroin was viewed as an urban problem in America that mainly affected "those" people and the only possible solution was incarceration. Now, white kids are becoming addicted to cheap heroin and the response of the system is that it is a public health crisis. All of a sudden, jail is not the solution, we need more counseling and programs to help these sick, not criminal white kids. It's the same old story in America. If you are brown, black or even white and poor you have no money and no power. You continue to be an easy target for a system that intends to do everything possible to put you in jail. This man is no threat to anybody and certainly a sheriff in Alameda County has way more important things to do.

Re: “Alameda Sheriff Deputy's Arrest of Street Fruit Vendor Goes Viral and Draws Criticism

This is not a drug dealer he is selling fruit for Gods Sake! People have a choice of buying or not buying the fruit. I doubt if he is going to put a dent in the local Safeway's Budget! Is this what our taxes are paying for?

Re: “Alameda Sheriff Deputy's Arrest of Street Fruit Vendor Goes Viral and Draws Criticism

How many times do we need to be told something by the law enforcement establishment -- "the car drove aggressively at the officer" -- that turns out to be a complete coverup lie until the public will stop trusting them altogether? I'm well past that, personally.

And we need more cops on the beat to keep us safe from those people who dare to
1 make a living
2 deliver produce straight to the consumer

Cops are concerned about safeways profits ?
Or catching the low hanging fruit

Re: “Alameda Sheriff Deputy's Arrest of Street Fruit Vendor Goes Viral and Draws Criticism

Clearly the Sheriff has far too many deputies if all they have to do is arrest people for selling fruit. Perhaps a few retirees could not be replaced and the money used to hire immigration defense lawyers for the County, oh Board of Supervisors?

Re: “Oakland Fire Department Hits Hills Homeowners With Erroneous Inspection Bills

These inspections where voted down by the voters a few years ago and yet the City continuous to inspect. Instead of abiding by the majority vote and halting this program which in reality serves no real purpose! The City does not maintain the City owned public lands, EBRP does not maintain theirs, CalTrans, etc etc!!!

How soon we forget who allowed the fire which started the Firestorm to get out of hand due to lack of training and expertise! Same almost happened last year off Keller till public phone calls reminded the OFD that they should get their --- back up to the site and monitor it!

This is discriminatory in nature by the City and the Fire Department. It is time that a Property Owners Association be formed, to represent the property owners throughout Oakland, with an elected board that can then represent the facts, educate and give political clout to the ones the City sees fit to gauge consistently. Because Oakland can't get it's act together and attract sales tax base businesses to fill the coffers in a cash strapped government we, the property owners, are expected to pay and pay while the different city departments do nothing and Oakland is depicted as a city from the third world!

It is also time to revisit all the Property tax assessments that Oakland property owners have been asked to pay over these many years and yet receive no services in return. The City is in a mess and the Leadership has not a clue, yet keeps coming up with "new" programs that return nothing to the City but line pockets of a few at our expense!

Oakland needs to be audited by an outside agency to find out where all our monies are going! The Oakland Fire Department has been flush with money from the many grants and millions given from monies voted on my voters, believing that things will change! The fire department does the footwork by going door to door to sell the various Measures that have been on the ballot over the years and reap in a fine share of the proceeds as their reward!!

Re: “Oakland Fire Department Hits Hills Homeowners With Erroneous Inspection Bills

This is what you should do when you make a mistake, Campbell Washington said about the departments new plan

What they should do is compensate citizens for the systemic time-burn created by their errors and omissions. Only then will there be real change, as presently there are no consequences to their issuing false fines and fees. A citizen not having to pay an unjust fee or fine that they never should have charged in the first is hardly a win.

Here's a thought - work with your community and educate them on fire safety - and communicate clearly what the rules are. I am shocking how many up here are enraged, confused or stressed about this matter

Meanwhile - the City cannot fill pot holes, resolve homeless camps or illegal dumping or clean up their own lots, and we do not see them "fining themselves" do we? Instead we see their acting CEOs (Chief Excuse Officers) providing various "messaging" about why they cannot or will not fix things.

Re: “After Anheuser-Busch Buyout Of Wicked Weed, Is It Time To Retire The Term 'Craft Beer'?

I despise the Bay Area's "hoppier than thou" approach to beer, but even more annoyed when something I love is bought by InBev - Goose Island's purchase in 2011 broke my heart.

Re: “The Port Bar

The Port Bar is great. It's the only straight-friendly gay bar in Oakland that's open 7 days a week. They have good drinks, hot bartenders, DJs spinning music, and go-go boys and girls. On Sunday evenings there's #Blessed Cabaret with hostess Carnie Asada. #Blessed Cabaret isn't just a drag show. Each week there are different live performances by performers who sing, rap and tell jokes. It's fun!

Re: “A New Plan For Oakland’s Planning Commission

"We want an Oakland for all. Currently, planning commissioners are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by City Council, our elected representatives.

"Too often, these nomination decisions are made behind closed doors and benefit both their personal friends and political donors."

Well put. Oakland needs to elect a Mayor and Council Members who serve the ordinary people of Oakland, all of them, not just the wealthy and priviledged, out-of-towners and transplants. Those folks can take care of
themselves, and do.
