Re: “So It Begins: The California Legalization 2016 Primer

MPP's proposal simply perpetuates prohibition by imposing draconian restrictions on how much individuals are allowed to grow and possess.

Re: “Sierra Club Threatens Legal Action Against Oakland Council Candidate Jill Broadhurst Over Campaign Mailers

wow - she must not have much faith in those polls showing her with the lead, because this is not a front runner move, it's a desperation move. I guess I'd be nervous too if my opponent had the sole endorsement of, not just the Sierra Club, but the police, firefighters, League of Conservation voters, every member of the school district, Alameda Democratic party, etc...

Re: “Can Black-Owned Restaurants Combat Gentrification?

"It was incredibly hard to get past all the cloaked prejudice, and complete misunderstanding of the concept of gentrification."

There was no cloaked prejudice. There were blatant preferences and ideas stated - preferences and ideas you clearly don't agree with. That's your prerogative. But there are many in the city that agree with what these owners are saying and doing.

To your point about gentrification, in 1980 (the year that I was born in Oakland), the city was roughly 50% Black. That said, it is turning into a version of Brooklyn with mass gentrification and what spurred this was to lure techies from SF with more affordable housing. Well, who are those techies? It's very easy to discern from looking at their employment demographic numbers.

And no one in this article misunderstands the concept of gentrification. I think you misunderstand the REALITY of how that plays out and what it looks like. Typically, cities are not invested in improving communities of color, or improving areas that they don't think will see an influx of new residents. This is why you don't see a lot of growth happening in East and West Oakland proper. What you see is a revitalization of Downtown Oakland (complete with new BS names like "Uptown" - it's still Downtown Oakland).

Downtown, the Lake/Adams Point, and Temescal, especially, are turning into sets for "Girls" on HBO with the hipsters. The actual soul of these areas is being forsaken, and no one seems to care. What makes Oakland Oakland is dwindling. But as long as there's a Starbucks and new wine bar nearby, I guess no one is bothered...

Re: “Bay Bridge Steel To Be Made Available For Reuse In Public Art Projects

That is terrific news and along with others, I have been wondering if there was any possible use of the steel in art projects and other public facility spaces.

Re: “Now Open in Berkeley (and Serving Monday Brunch): Handlebar

Just had the burger last night. Really want one this morning! So delicious. The toasted housemade bun is the perfect compliment to the patty. Oh and the accompanying truffled tator tots......out of bounds good. Ask for the garlic aioli to dip them in.

$50 seems kind of steep for paella, but maybe.

Hmmm.....I feel like this is pigging backing off the efforts and successes of KONO without any recognition. That's kind of lame.

Re: “Berkeley Versus Big Soda

Since it doesn't directly raise the price of soda, and it doesn't directly fund any health or school programs, can you please explain exactly how Measure D will do anything about this country's obesity epidemic?

Re: “Berkeley's Unequal Punishment of Teachers

The purpose of PAR is and always has been "to reduce the cost of dismissing tenured teachers, which can otherwise be very expensive." It is a CYA for bully principals to use teachers to take out other teachers. It is NOT about helping teachers or children. I was a PAR "coach" for one year. I was very naive when I signed up to do it. I thought I would take a break from the classroom, get a little extra money and help teachers. It became very clear that we were not there to help. We were there to do the dirty work for the district and cover them from any future lawsuits. It looks better for them if a teacher gets rid of another teacher then for a principal to do it. If the principal does it, then that principal could become scrutinized and they don't want that. This whole program me is a scam. I don't know why anyone would go into teaching nowadays. When I started many years ago it was a vocation. Now it is people jockeying for power and control and it is just a political mess. Stay away from teaching an stay away from people who are affiliated with PAR.

Re: “Sierra Club Threatens Legal Action Against Oakland Council Candidate Jill Broadhurst Over Campaign Mailers

Much ado about nothing. It seems like a minor mistake to me in the grand scheme of things. I find it much more telling that Campbell-Washington's team is trying to make so much hay out of this. Seems like a desperate hail mary type of move to me.

Re: “Sierra Club Threatens Legal Action Against Oakland Council Candidate Jill Broadhurst Over Campaign Mailers

And now she is blaming it on her consultant who allegedly "used the logo unaware of the trademark violation". What does this say about her judgment at the least hiring someone who doesn't know the most basic rules of campaign mailers, and more to the point she is unwilling to take responsibility for the actions of her own campaign without dishing it off on someone else? What does that presage about her behavior if she were elected? Yes - she "sort of" took responsibility, by blaming her consultant. This was a play on her part, and she got burned.

Re: “Sierra Club Threatens Legal Action Against Oakland Council Candidate Jill Broadhurst Over Campaign Mailers

Ms. Broadhurst is responible for the same deceptive thing on an April Montclair Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) mailer sent to everyone in Montclair, and on her website when she claimed to be "the founding member" of the Montclair NCPC. She was forced by Nick Vigilante, one of two actual founders, to change her website. Now, Ms. Broadhurst's website reads "a founding member." This is still somewhat misleading because she was not involved in the beginning efforts to form the Montclair NCPC in 2002 and before she was elected to the inaugural NCPC Board in May 2003.

Re: “Sierra Club Threatens Legal Action Against Oakland Council Candidate Jill Broadhurst Over Campaign Mailers

"Broadhurst was trying to enhance her credibility with voters."

That's what pols do. That's what chums Jean Quan and Annie Washington do.

"Deceptive, self-serving behavior.."

Uh, huh. Do a little research on Quan's public statements over her four years as Mayor. Look up Annie W's work as a mouthpiece for Quan.

Still seems to me that a pol might well claim an interest in the environment by saying, truthfully as far as I know, that she is a Sierra Club member.

And for those of you most naive about environmental matters, the Sierra Club is not always the most dependable spokesperson for the trees. Remember that the founder, David Brower, quit to form a new group which was far less politically "adaptable." The Sierra Club, like the Democratic Party, isn't always what some people imagine it is.

Gotta do some critical thinking every now and then, sorry.

Re: “Zoo Gone Wild

I just spoke with Mayor Jean Quan's office and they say that this issue has been going on for years and that the neighbors have stood their ground and that the Zoo will have to follow federal procedure's in order to complete their land grab. Richard in Mayor Jean Quan's office said if he lived near the Zoo he would be against it also. He said that the Zoo should follow Friends of Knowland Parks revised expansion plan. He also seemed to talk like they were only the mayor and that there is not much they can do....Stop the Zoo from sprawling. The Zoo should be focused on making their facilities better before they cant handle this big expansion plan.
