Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

I ask the OPD and their covert operators to not seed demonstrations with provocateurs who are the ones who start the violence and then quickly disappear, letting the cops assault nonviolent protestors.

The vandalism that has plagued Oakland protests has been virtually always started by some white thugs, then blacks are attacks by the cops. And sometimes the cops attack nonwhites, of course. But the provocateurs are hired thugs. Not the demonstrators.

Re: “Anne Kirkpatrick Picked to Lead Oakland Police. Here's What We Know About Her.

I saw that in your link to the Chicago questionnaire (thank you for it). That Kirkpatrick attributes Broken Windows theory to Bratton's success is troublesome (if not outright wrong) based on the exhaustive study by UC Berkeley Professor Zimring.

I could not read your link to the WSJ article without a subscription. That Bratton is associated with it or supports it does not mean he used it. Regardless it is not just whether one supports a theory generally, but how one applies it. As Bratton said before on a separate but related topic, the key is whether it's done constitutionally that is important.

Recall that besides ushering modern policing in with Compstat (created by Jack Maple), which uses the statistics of crime hot spots and not subjective, biased policing, Bratton did more to clean up LAPD than any other Chief before him (including firing top commanders... not exactly popular at the time within the department).

Zimring also documents that the decrease in crime in NYC under Bratton actually decreased the # of people sent to jail. And thus a decrease in long-term criminalization.

Bratton is not the buggy man that many on the far left fear. Indeed his conscience as a moderate willing to do things constitutionally, and actively engage the African American community, is one of the reasons he parted ways with Giuliani.

Back to the original point, there is no way Oakland can institute Broken Windows anyway...it simply doesn't have the manpower.

Hotspot Policing with effective Compstat is a goal that can be achieved...along with Constitutional policing under the reform efforts, and supported by holistic Ceasefire.

Re: “There's zero chance the Oakland Raiders move to Las Vegas (if they do, I'll sport a Mark Davis bowl cut for a week)

The NFL, MLB, and NBA will never allow a franchise to move to Las Vegas. If the MLB will never reinstate Pete Rose for gambling, what makes anyone think a major sports team would have a green light around some of our country's most corrupt gambler's ? Too risky, and I don't mean just player gambling involvement. Just the fact that Vegas draws a criminal element which could gain inside access to said franchise. It doesn't make sense on any front.

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

The vast majority of people in the Bay Area did not vote for Trump. Yet only a very small percentage of those people will participate in marches, general strikes or other demonstrations. The reasons are many and valid. And while we can pontificate endlessly, basically to ourselves, about violence or nonviolence, revolutionary vanguardism, etc., we actually spend very little time trying to reach the masses of people who are our allies. Here is an action that invites participation by EVERYONE. "Bang the Pots, Raise a Din" is a nationwide decentralized action that invites participation by everyone and encourages us to speak with our neighbors: the essence of organizing.

To the Lord of the Flies children who want to ignore every logical argument for why people protest against an oppressive system design to benefit privileged people... If you don't want protest then work towards creating a governing system that provides for the social needs of humanity rather than the expediency of commerce. As an example...

"Until and unless you are willing to accept responsibility for these actions,..."

... like the Giants World Series win and the massive smashy smashy and burning buses and vandalism that ensued...

Ms. Brooks, you and your organization provide a venue for others to commit acts of vandalism and violence against others. Until and unless you are willing to accept responsibility for these actions, you will lack the credibility necessary to take your comments seriously.....

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

Sandy, are you going to fund the destruction from the protests? Didn't think so.

NONE of what is going to be protest is going to matter. Trump is President whether you like it or not. That's democracy.

DEALT WITH IT!

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

No, the real children here are the people in this society who believe property, in this case windows, commercial building facades, dumpsters, newstands and police vehicles, are more important and sacrosanct than human beings, the lives of real persons. They have not evolved into adults who care more about the social needs of humanity than the unfettered engines of commerce. They ignore the violence perpetrated by racism, classism, wealth inequality and the police hired to protect commerce and the property interests of the 1%. And they ignore simple facts clearly presented and assert back mean selfish opinions.

Clearly Brooks states: "At nearly every protest, the police attacked protesters with tear gas, concussion grenades, and rubber bullets." This my dear friends is VIOLENCE. Deadly force of harm aimed at human beings. By Police.

"And some independent protesters engaged in property destruction." Property destruction is vandalism and vandalism is not physical harm to a human being. And yes she clearly says that "independent" protesters do what they are going to do. ADTP or any organized group does not exist as a police force of other people. That is the job of the police and they need to do their jobs without harming or provoking human beings.

I have personally seen at demonstrations in downtown Oakland where OPD literally moved aside from being in front of storefronts to seemingly allow people to break windows or spray graffiti. All they had to do to stop this was to line up in front of the buildings and just stand there, as they sometimes do. OPD is never seriously injured (except a cut or paint splattered) while protesters hit, end up in the hospital. It's as if OPD wants there to be vandalism and they provoke it with unprovoked (I can't tell you how many times I have seen this happen) weaponry use. Or back off and let stuff happen. Makes for good headlines against all protest and makes good propaganda fodder for the entitled 1% who own our society.

And again, MLK makes the clear point commenters here want to ignore because it is the heart of the issue and embarrasses their selfish position:

"These conditions [protested] are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention ... a riot is the language of the unheard."

Re: “Ambushed: Contra Costa County Law Enforcement Sets Up Surprise Stings To Help Federal Immigration Agents Arrest and Deport Immigrants

In "The New Jim Crow," Michelle Alexander writes: "Rather than rely on race, we use our criminal justice system to label people of color criminals and then engage in all the practices we supposedly left behind." As a society, we have to push ourselves to understand the big picture, and we have to see the HUMANITY of people who have been arrested or convicted. Folks might be victims of racial profiling, folks might have made mistakes - look at stories like that of Eddy Zheng, who committed a very serious crime while a teenager and completely turned his life around and now mentors at-risk youth. Here, we have folks who are complying with their probation and working to change their lives, yet Government officials are using deceit to lure them in and separate them from their loved ones. Meanwhile, the County's making a pretty penny off of detaining folks. Is that ethical? Once we declare some people to essentially be not human, it's a slippery slope towards all of our constitutional rights being stripped down.

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

If Ms. Brooks knows her movement history back to the time of Martin Luther King, Jr., she knows that the organizers of mass demonstrations had monitors who ensured peaceful events. Half a million people marched down Market Street in San Francisco without the vandalism at Ms. Brooks' street shows. Thanks for your statement in the Express, Ms. Brooks, but until you take specific steps of action, your allegedly peaceful assemblies provide cover for vandals and thieves.

Re: “Berkeley Social Club Is a Different Kind of Korean Restaurant

I've enjoyed the Millionaire's Bacon at Brewery Gulch Inn many times, and it's so incredibly delicious! What I find interesting is that not only is the name of Mr. Choi's bacon the same as that of the dish that's been on BGI's menu since 2001, but the ingredients for Mr. Choi's bacon look identical to the ingredients in the Millionaire's Bacon at Brewery Gulch Inn. Things that make you go "Hmmm...."

Re: “Protest Trump's Inauguration in Oakland, But Please Don't Be Violent

The headline of this piece says " .. please don't vandalize ..", however the headline is typically written by the newspaper, not the author .... and, in fact, nowhere in the piece does the author speak to vandalism. It IS vandalism that plagues Oakland protests, perpetrated by those who like to riot for sport.

I've read the first sentence of the second to last paragraph ("APTP refuses to be boxed by politicians, police, or media into a narrative that condemns any form of protest, except bodily harm") several times and still don't understand it.

What IS clear is that the author, for whatever reason, cannot bring herself to explicitly disavow and speak against vandalism.

Re: “Berkeley Social Club Is a Different Kind of Korean Restaurant

We are both amused and honored that Mr. Choi, a guest of ours in 2010, has chosen to include on his menu Millionaire's Bacon, a signature item created by our first chef and the featured item on our menu since the Inn's opening in 2001.

Its a shame because its not about this case its about other illegal immigrants they come here to work hard ,it be unthinkable of many of you doing the hard work these people do you won't do it ,its more your profile of illegal immigrants is incorrect , just because a few have committed crimes ,,we're a country of equal opportunity and justice for all ,,EQUALITY HM

Re: “Ambushed: Contra Costa County Law Enforcement Sets Up Surprise Stings To Help Federal Immigration Agents Arrest and Deport Immigrants

The premise of this article is so flawed, it defies description. It promotes the concept that illegal immigrants who have committed crimes are somehow "sacred cows" with higher rights than actual U.S. citizens. It implies that cooperation among law enforcement agencies to rid this country of such criminals is a crime. Kim, for example, was given his chance when pardoned after his conviction of a Georgia hold-up - and then he did another crime! He had better learn Korean, because that is where he should immediately be deported to. The reporter has made the case for just such law enforcement agency cooperation - no matter how many tears this article might precipitate from liberals who refuse to respect the personal consequences of law and order.
