I've seen this show in various incarnations as it was being developed and have brought various friends to it and, amazingly, I am never bored for one second. It's so funny, so intelligent, and so moving. And you really don't need to have kids or dogs or a husband or wife of your own to get it. Anyone who has led a busy life with unexpected crises and relationship complexities will see themselves in this. Sometimes that will make you laugh, and sometimes it will make you squirm. Lots to discuss and think about afterwards, so it's a great show for friends, a book club outing, a date night with an established partner, an activity with your parents. Date Night at Pet Emergency is a great example of what I love about solo performance; it stimulates conversation and self-examination like no other art form. And you'll be laughing all the way.
Probably the last time I can remember laughing - so much - out loud...and for the best reason: I recognized very similar questions and struggles. Made for a great date night with plenty to talk with my husband about (he enjoyed it very much too!)

At once funny, touching, and very human, Ms. Rothman paints on a large canvas, using recognizable, everyday situations we can all sympathize with to explore bigger themes: the nature of love, the challenges of present-day marriage, and whether we are destined, despite our best efforts, to repeat the patterns set by our parents. Love, of course, wins out, as it must, but the real star of the show -- Ms. Rothman's smart, slick performance aside -- is perseverance.
This is a big story, a validating tale for couples wondering why "having it all" costs so much, a cautionary tale for couples who think they'll be able to skate, and in general a most entertaining journey for everyone. Will continue to prompt smiles and/or good conversation, long after the final bow -- or, in this case, the final bow-wow.
Imagine someone who fights on the front lines for voting rights, reproductive rights, a livable wage, affordable housing, and an overhaul of the criminal justice system. Marie Equi did all that nearly 100 years ago. And she was a lesbian -- one of the first publicly known lesbians on the West Coast. As well as an early woman physician. She served time in San Quentin for speaking out against WWI. ......
Reads like an historical novel but is solid history with political context and extensive citations.
Some of these plays soar with good humor: a birds' eye view of Cinderella, or the wife of Bath's witty verbal flights. Others dig under the skin, particularly those about women who turn on the powerless, or show generosity in dire straights. Thoughtful, with fine performances.

Remarkable production. Thought provoking.
Six utterly different fabulous portrayals of women and relationships told by riffing on familiar classics. Heartbreak alternates with tender connection, satire, redemption, rebellion, and outright situation comedy. A delightful way to spend an evening gasping, laughing and crying. Beautifully rendered, often surprising, intellectually absorbing,
A wonderful assort of short plays that go from an incredible portrayal of evil to really funny.
What choices would you make to take back your power?
The legendary characters of In Plain Sight will risk almost anything.
Inspired by classic tales such as Medea, Cinderella, and the Iliad, five Bay Area playwrights explore beyond the margins of your favorite stories, revealing hidden truths of gender and power. By turns harrowing and hilarious, this anthology of short plays ranges in tone from whimsical comedy to Southern Gothic.
