Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

@ Andrew really ? because one of the former Pastors of the Grand Avenue Seventh-Adventist Church- who if I recall (I could be wrong) was instrumental in bringing such a restaurant to Oakland ( I recall talk about it a few years ago)- risked his ENTIRE career with a sermon about loving EVERYONE- including those in the gay community. Point-- Generalization ? Yes there are some- maybe many who are not as "progressive" in their religiosity. Some if not many ARE. You can have your beliefs based on your faith AND still love your brother and not JUDGE them on their lifestyle choice. It's not THAT difficult. My belief in scientific theories does NOT negate MY faith. Sure... some may not believe what I believe but it has NO bearing on MY relationship with God. I'm not a vegetarian- but I look forward to trying something outside of my comfort zone if it's as good as the reviewer says it is. :)……

Re: “VAMP Record Shop in Oakland Celebrates Fourth Anniversary

We love VAMP and I don't stop by enough now that it left our neighborhood. Best of luck and success in the future. I really miss you here on Athol. It was great having some life on that block after hours.

Re: “Oakland Firefighters Say Their Department Is So Badly Managed, Ghost Ship Warehouse Wasn't Even In Its Inspection Database

I am catching up on these articles now or would have commented sooner. With Fire Dept personnel earning upwards of $350K plus annually, more with benefits and overtime, there is NO excuse for not getting the job of running the department DONE. Some of the city salaries are ridiculously high where others (like teachers) are ridiculously low (and yes I know OUSD is a separate budget but these are city employees of a sort). Something must be done to address this disparity. I fully understand the inherent dangers of fire and police work but enough is enough. No wonder the city doesn't have money for other important projects, paying salaries like these.

Re: “Should The Next Oakland Unified Schools Superintendent Be Homegrown?

I'm casting a vote for home grown - let's support promotion of worthy candidates from within the system. There is no need to spend a lot of scarce funding on national searches if we have strong candidates here - plus they won't have sticker shock when they have to buy a home here!

Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

I wonder, Andrew Zollman, if you know the religious affiliation of all restaurant owners in the Bay Area? My guess would be no and probably many would offend you as well. Heck, there could even be, gulp, republican restaurateurs. . Do they espouse their religious beliefs or just serve good vegan food there? Have you been?

Re: “Inside Immigration Court: Are Deportation Hearings In The Bay Area Unconstitutional?

they unlawfully enter the country, then commit crimes, get convicted and want to stay here.
How can there be any question as to the fact they will still be in the country unlawfully?
They have to go back.

Re: “VAMP Record Shop in Oakland Celebrates Fourth Anniversary

It is amazing how almost any smallish business like Vintage Art and Music for the People are obligated to use Fakebook for publicity. It is even more amazing that the Express puts that fact on the front page of the story.

Re: “Town Business: Developer Wants to Stick MacArthur BART Tower's Affordable Units Entirely in Bottom Quarter of Building

More mindless drivel designed to fan flames of class warfare. BFD that the subsidized housing does not include a penthouse suite.

What a terrible thought that the "elites" that live there will need to pony up an even greater premium price to get the views. Should we give them more lower floors so that the elites pay less money for a pretty view and drive the total revenue and viability down?

I think Darwin cut his math and economics classes and spent his time learning magical thinking.

Re: “Town Business: Developer Wants to Stick MacArthur BART Tower's Affordable Units Entirely in Bottom Quarter of Building

Another EBX article to stir the pot. Who gives a %^@$* where the units are ? If this was any other city in the USA there wouldn't be an option of affordable housing. Please EBX, try to stop fanning the flames.

Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

For ethical vegans (and anyone else who supports social justice), the fact that they are Seventh-Day Adventists (who are against LGBTs/marriage equality, and don't allow women to be ordained) could be an issue. I'm not comfortable patronizing them because of that, which is unfortunate because of the other positive aspects. There are many other vegan restaurants in the area who don't have oppressive beliefs (to my knowledge), who I'd rather support.

I've reached out to them, and they don't denounce these aspects of their religion (although they curiously claim they don't believe LGBTs or women are "inferior").

Re: “New Oakland Police Chief Talks Cultural Change and Compassion for the Homeless

I would love to see a large ship, i.e. a retired cruise ship, parked in the turning basin and made available as a homeless shelter. The land will always be used up for more and more expensive property development projects, but our waterways could serve as a very good platform for safety and shelter. Who wants to work on that, and fund it?

Re: “City of Oakland Replaces Longstanding Coliseum-Oracle Board Members With Uber Lawyer, McElhaney

What is the point of enjoying Oakland and working to improve it, when the likes of Reid and McElhaney run it?

Re: “A Black-Owned, Woman-Owned Craft Bottle Shop Is Coming to Uptown Oakland

Wishing you success. Then hoping you and your family bring some of that success and expand in East Oakland. We could use some shops out this way too.

Re: “The Bay Is Brutal: A Love Letter To Concrete and Brutalism in the Bay Area

Joseph Esherick is also credited for Wurster Hall's design, with Vernon DeMars and Don Olsen. Good, playful piece -- those of us who spent years either studying or working in a brutalist building, for me that's Wurster Hall, particularly will appreciate the cognitive dissonance that brutalist structures create in their inhabitants. I love/hate Wurster Hall, and there certainly not enough character spaces for me to tell you the many ways. However it remains the Jungian archetype of architectural building form -- forever imprinted in my subconscious as a beautiful, evocative, leaky, cold space. As I write, I think of all nighters at the drafting board almost three decades ago, and really want an espresso from Strada (Roma). I will be curious to see what happens to Campi's celestial wonder, the old BAMPFA, a seismically challenged structure (google "non-ductile concrete"). Campi took his inspiration for the building from the heavens.

Re: “Donald Cried

NorCal natives Kyle Espeleta and Jesse Wakeman co-wrote this funny, unnerving, and touching dark comedy. Shot for just 40k over a total of 14 days, DC is definitely one not to miss for indie film buffs and mainstream moviegoers alike. Won't be in theaters long so get out and go see.
