Re: “Oakland Nonprofit Sues Coca-Cola, 'Big Soda' Lobbyist Group Over 'Following The Tobacco Playbook'

Great campaign by the Praxis Project, although given the power of advertising in the United States, it's difficult to curb the deceptiveness of ads. Free speech in this country has for the most part become the freedom to engage in commercial speech. Last year, for example, ad revenues totaled about $320 billion -- nearly 60% of what we spend on public schools K-12.

Re: “Dakota Access Pipeline Opponents Call on CalPERS to Divest

Absolutely agree with all positions opposing continued funding of DAPL(and any other fossil fuel infrastructure investments)for all the reasons mentioned.
To those who say staying invested is more powerful in terms of changing their activities, I say on the contrary: Divesting until such time as the company complies with the wishes of its investors(the people ofCALpers)will be a much more powerful way to effect changes that leaves the way open to reinvest.
Secondly, it is the money of the people of CALpers. They get to decide whether the place they invest it meets their ethical and moral standards. Anything else is placing profits over people and life. Get busy finding and funding Green Infrastructure to look at long term benefits, which are not necessarily measured in dollars, to the people who recive CALpers.

Do you crypto-anarchists really think the mayor is aware of every action going on at every level? Why is this article significant?

Re: “High-Level City Staff Knew of Police Sex Crimes Months Before Oakland Mayor Says She Was Informed

Thanks to Belinda for providing the documentation which provided the foundation for this article. These revelations are very troubling and underscores the lack of accountability on the part of the City's administration. We deserve better and so do all victims of the misconduct and incompetence that have brought harm to many Oakland residents.

Re: “Will Oakland Finally Build Some Affordable Housing in the Hills — or Will Leaders Squander the Opportunity?

Oakland doesn't need to finalize its policy in order to do the right thing with this land: build low-income housing - that remains low income housing forever - on the entire city-owned parcel. Neighbors don't like it? Too bad. Time for the hills to accept their share of low income housing.

Re: “Did An Oakland Cop Kill His Wife?

Wait, it's "mishandling evidence" to have a typist transcribe recorded interviews with a suspect? Unless Gannt is a terrific typist, someone else definitely should have transcribed the tapes. And no matter who transcribed them, the transcript could contain errors. So presumably the tapes are still available, because THEY, not the transcript, are the "evidence."

As for the rest of these allegations, everyone knows OPD is totally corrupt and that the City and the DA allowed or enabled this corruption for many years.

Re: “Town Business: Affordable Housing in the Hills; $300,000 Police Chief; Cell Phone Surveillance Policy

IMO, the news from Darwin BondGraham about the new police chief's salary lack important context.

So what that she is being paid more than her predecessor? Why would that be important? Is she actually more qualified and experienced? Is the new wage actually more appropriate and competitive?

People with different levels of experience, competence and potential get paid different amounts.

How much do other police chief's get paid in City's of similar size? I would say similar size and crime and reform issues (should be paid more because the challenge is greater) but it is so bad here that there may not be any comparable data points.

Is the pay at the median, at the top, at the bottom? There is this thing out there called a competitive market. If we are paying the new chief compensation that reflects the market norms, then so be it.

If she is being paid well above those norms, then there is a problem. Given our problems and challenges are likely way above the norm, somewhat above may actually be OK.

Without this kind of information, all Darwin is doing is throwing out a hand grenade for someone to jump on.

Re: “Will Thousands of East Bay Patients, Workers Lose Coverage, Jobs Due To Trump's 'Obamacare' Repeal?

I've been lucky enough to be covered by my employer and still am. Still, the stories of people filing for bankrupcy because of medical issues have not been in the news lately like they used to be.
The article is good but readers should also know that repeal can be done with 50 votes. Replace will need 60 - that means some dems will have to go along if replacement is going to even happen. AND Trumps people have a few very watered-down replacement plans that are FAR inferior to Obamacare (even with all its flaws), but will be much cheaper for the government. So Dems may be put in the postion of having to help pass some very bad legislation or be blamed for blocking Trump's precious "replacement" plan - it's a lose-lose.
BTW without coverage, people use the ER for primary care, which costs everyone a lot more money than if they could get actual preventative health care.

Re: “Will Thousands of East Bay Patients, Workers Lose Coverage, Jobs Due To Trump's 'Obamacare' Repeal?

Over 200,000 people may lose their jobs and/or healthcare in CA-- 6,000 people in Alameda county alone, and somehow they can be accused of not planning ahead and/or will soon be sucking the govt's tit for all that great free stuff that's so casually handed out to anyone who wants it? Not everyone has bootstraps to pull up!

Count yourself very lucky if nothing unexpectedly harmful has ever happened to your family member or friend that was beyond their control and insurance wouldn't cover expenses; or that you weren't laid off or had your company eliminate health insurance because it was too expensive; that you aren't self-employed and your insurance wouldn't cover needed surgeries; that you have never had to choose between rent, food, or an exorbitant medical bill; that you've never been in need, homeless, or jobless.

The US govt unnecessarily spends billions on the military that, in part, could go to providing free healthcare to every US citizen. But some "undeserving" person might benefit from it, so let's scrap anything remotely to do with creating a just, healthy society and let our current President and his billionaire cronies, who have no plan, wreak havoc on the populace.
