Re: “Veggie Lee in Hayward Goes Beyond Standard Chinese Vegetarian Fare

Yes, count me in! Margaret and I had a great banquet style cabbage dish at a fancy Peking duck place in Beijing...one of my most memorable food memories from China. Would love to try this fancy cabbage thing.

Re: “Oakland's Dive Bar Aficionados Adapt to the City's Changing Bar Scene

The thing not mentioned about the reopened publik house is that Scott worked in that neighborhood, on that same block none the less, since 1994. That he's been serving that neighborhood from the coffee shops to the neighborhood gastropubs for the majority of his adult life and had patroned Ye Olde Hut since the day he arrived in Oakland as a 22 year old dropped off after making a cross country move with the money in his pockets. Scott is exactly who the tired old bar owners should be turning their businesses over to because he isn't some tech douche gentrification piece of shit.. He opened that space with love and adiration and the utmost respect for that bar and the glory he wanted to bring back to make it the place it was when he stepped in there (when you pilar were in kindergarten and have no concept of), a lively fun approachable neighborhood watering hole with quality drinks and friendly faces.

Re: “Will Revenue From Legalizing Marijuana and Passing Proposition 64 Mostly Go To Police?

Thank you, Mr. Downs, for this straightforward and concise response to all the wack disinformation and fear-mongering from weed dealers collaborating with the cops and others to prolong the monsterous crime against humanity that is cannabis prohibition while hypocritically hiding behind patients in order to line their own pockets free from regulation, taxes, and especially competition from legitimate businesses.

Maybe next you could likewise eviscerate the “Big Marijuana” bogeyman being pushed by, coincidentally(!), *both* the weed dealers and cops, etc.; you know, the “corporate takeover” of the industry that hasn’t happened in Colorado or Washington, and isn’t happening in Oregon or Alaska, despite none of those states’ regulatory regimes including the protections for small cannabis businesses found in Prop 64, like no grow licenses over an acre until 2023 …

Re: “The End of the Oakland Fence Saga

Yet another fine example of Oakland city department wasted money, and another reason to say no to measure KK when they say they need more money to maintain infrastructure. When they can stop wasting the money they already have taken from us taxpayers, we will perhaps consider if they should be allowed more.

Re: “The End of the Oakland Fence Saga

Poor Mr Harkinson, caught in the web of idiots at the City of Oakland. Two years of staff time, multiple departments in conflict with each other and at the end of the day, no path provided to a solution. Nobody has the balls or intelligence to make the right decision, so the public just gets passed off between departments. The bottom line concern for the City should have been to make sure that the situation is safe for the public and nobody falls into the creek. That was Mr Harkinsons concern and why he replaced the fence in the first place. Instead, the City is stuck in confusion about permits, revenue and liability. First of all, a 3 foot, split rail fence does not require a building permit. But it does require an encroachment permit because it is in the public right of way. Instead of the City being concerned about the long term deep pocket liability of somebody being seriously injured or dead from falling into the creek and filing a major lawsuit, they focus on the liability of the fence itself. The simple solution was for the city to replace the fence themselves and find the money somewhere in the creek improvement budget. Or allow Mr Hutchinson's fence to be considered as a replacement of the previous fence that had no permits. At the end of the day, the public interest is not in the permits, it is in the safety along this portion of the creek. Two years wasted on something this simple and at least that long and no decision on a simple bust stop relocation at 30th and Telegraph. These idiots are not capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time. Things that happen in most cities as routine items are a big deal in Oakland because the multi layered management staff is incompetent and there is no leadership. How many other simple things around town are not being resolved. Does anybody down there see the illegal dumping and potholes? I guess if you cannot charge anybody fees for permits, it's not that important.

Re: “Cooking Other People's Food: How Chefs Appropriate Bay Area 'Ethnic' Cuisine

I appreciate Luke's reviews and articles, not that I always agree with him. If the point of this article was to expose "whitewashed" ethnic cuisine, perhaps he shouldn't have used Asians (hapa Korean guy and Japanese woman) cooking kebabs as an example. Just about every country/culture has it's version of kebabs or meat on a stick. And yes that includes Europeans/white people: Greeks, Italians, Serbs, Russians, etc... You know parts of Europe were once parts of the Ottoman, and Persian empires, and that influenced the cuisine. I get the whitewashing complaint. I'm a white guy, but I was annoyed when they cast Tilda Swinton (still a great actress) to play 'The Ancient One' in 'Doctor Strange'. But as far as "cooking other peoples' food goes": If I'm having dinner in a Korea town restaurant, frankly I don't give a shit if the cook is Mexican, as long as the food tastes good. But that's never a complaint, only when a gringo cooks ethnic food does it become "cultural appropriation". It seems that term has become a default negative in the minds of some of my fellow liberals. I suppose I shouldn't celebrate lunar new year with my Asian family, because it's cultural appropriation. Give me a break. People migrate, cultures and cuisines mix. Having said all that, If white rock star chefs insist on opening these ethnic restaurants, I prefer they at least employ some Thai (as an example) cooks and staff. When I go to a Chinese restaurant, and there's a white waitress who can't speak a word of Chinese, I'm not going to trust the food.

Re: “Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson Hit in Face with Pie at Event, Assaults Protester in 'Bloody' Scene

A little context might be helpful. KJ was instrumental in getting a quarter-billion dollar subsidy for the NBA Kings to stay in Sacramento. The City gets the stadium, so no property tax revenue, and absolutely no control over the Kings, so in spite of a $9 million hole in the City's budget, it has no leverage if the Kings decide to extort *another* stadium from the City (this new one is the second such act of extortion).

JFYI, professional sports has an anti-trust exemption, so it can charge monopoly rents. Heck, Al Davis has extorted financial concessions from both Oakland and Anaheim for the Raiders.

Most hilarious of all are the commenters calling KJ "liberal" -- you know, sympathetic to working people. This entire scheme is an enormous gift to the plutocrats who own the Kings. Forbes reports that since the stadium's approval, the Kings are worth roughly double what Vivek Ranadive and his merry band of plutocrats (over)paid for them!

Not enough? David Cay Johnston reports that 75% of George W. Bush's net worth comes from a stadium deal in Arlington TX. Yep, KJ is liberal all right...and I'm the queen of England!

One more bit of business: The entire Sacramento oligarchy (from news media to elected officials) conspired to suppress an initiative requiring a popular vote about this stadium deal. The stadium would almost certainly have lost, too.

So... Pie in the face? I say KJ is luck it wasn't a guillotine.

Isn't this the last year that it will be on Treasure Island? I thought I heard that somewhere. I'm sure they will continue to have it, as long as it makes money, right? No such thing as a music festival that's a one-time thing. Woodstock doesn't fit today's value$

Re: “City Told Developers to Fix Infamous West Oakland Artist Warehouse. Instead, They Demolished It.

property owners who illegally raise the rent will not be stopped by more laws - they already don't care what the laws are. It will still be on their renters to report the abuses, as it is now. This law may not be designed to punish law-abiding property owners but that is the effect.
Instead of Oakland collecting higher fees for more laws, why don't they enforce the ones they already have?

Was directed to this story by USAToday, when they attributed facts to "alternative weekly newspaper East Bay Express" on the front page of the sports section last Friday. Isn't USAToday distributed nationally? Not too shabby.

Re: “Plan Would Require City of Oakland To Be Part Owner of Any New Marijuana Business

Shame on Oaktown! The City is already "profiting" from unlawful businesses (dispensaries) "selling" the controlled substance marijuana by "taxing" the illegal activities! Now they want 25% ownership too, I'd like to hear them explain to Uncle Sam and the IRS how a governmental entity can blatantly violate current state law and federal law! Can't anyone see what the hell is going on here in California? They'll put individuals and organization lives, assets and livelihoods at risk of potential prosecution just so they can "cash in on our use"! Our own lawmakers have turned the "Compassionate Use Act" upside down and made it the "Compensation from our Use Act"! Wake up cannabis community and smell what our local and state governments are cooking! California has created its own drug cartel from the grey area they created, if you can't beat the "black market" just form your own "grey market" and take over the industry with corporate and government greed!

Sincerely Concerned,
