Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
Thank you Ron Dellums for these much needed words of inspiration, hope, and guidance. We are fortunate that, you still care - and are willing to continue to be a voice of wisdom and justice. Alan Dones
History repeats repeats repeats-- #1 When Occupy was shoved off the Plaza 5 years ago, a huge, huge crowd of everbody showed up to protest and march back there. Cops from 13 jurisdictions had been called to stop this community--all kind of folks--from getting there. Pleasanton then too. Then, #2 When we got to 14th and Broadway it was fenced and lined with cops in SWAT gear 20 deep. A mumble on the PA, teargas shot in every direction simultaneously. Parents with strollers and toddlers and dogs were a few feet away. Many of us ran to gather them up and pull them away--many of the people wanting to support Occupy were terrified, confused. And many were sick. Children included.
Hopefully many will be able to afford our fair cities' protection.
I looked up on www.cityofberkeley.info/myrentceiling what others in my building are paying for equivalent unit and it makes me sick. Some are paying about 35% of what I am. Add this 1.8% tax, the landlords and new prospective residents of Berkeley are getting shafted pretty hard here.
Why are you showing a busted up Pleasanton cop car with a story about Oakland? Were Oakland cop cars vandalized?
No one thinks about the landlord, just the poor tenant who has a low-income job. I bought a condo in Emeryville 15 years ago (and yes, I make less than 100k) and have been bleeding money for about 10 years, only recently am i slightly cash flow positive. Also, my property taxes increase as does my HOA which is almost $400/mo and all the insurance burden is on me. What about the landlord, it's just me, I'm no big developer but I saved to buy a condo to rent and hope to use as my retirement.
Thanks, Ambierce Brose, for the Comment.
If they really believe that folks there are fine with the effects on their towns of "Corporate Governance" investing, maybe CalSTRS board and staff should travel to Canton and to Wisconsin and have a meeting with those affected. Isn't that want Responsible people would do?
I believe in the wisdom of Ron Dellums words in calling on the Left to work with Democratic leadership in defense of the meaning of America and what Lincoln called the "natural better angels of our nature."
He knows the history of Oakland and when those from the Black Community formed a coalition politics to fight job and housing segregation of the day and won extraordinary victories with that coalition politics.
Sadly Kaiser won't do much except tell you to go to the emergency room. Hmmm...I battle depression and anxiety, and you want me to sit for hours in the waiting room and then hours in the emergency room before someone ever comes to see me and you want me to pay more out of pocket for it? ...no thanks. The soonest appointment with my psych I could get was 3 months away. This is ridiculous!
God Bless ! Insh this is the unity we need to move forward- as the veils continue to lift. We will continue to stand up be heard and be more than advocates for the oppressed.

I so appreciate this article profiling theater companies dedicated to presenting diverse work. As the Managing Director of Crowded Fire Theater Company, I would like to make a clarification about the focus of our work as one stat noted is misleading.
You indicate that over "half of the works and productions [at Crowded Fire] are led by and focused on queer women of color." This is inaccurate.
We do aggressively promote diversity in the selection of the work we choose. For context, here is our mission statement: Crowded Fires ensemble produces poetic, bold theater created by new and contemporary artists. We seek to engage our community by producing adventurous work, innovative in structure, which addresses the diverse political and social concerns of our audiences.
For example, since 2009, 99% of Crowded Fire's plays have been written by women, people of color, and/or queer-identifying playwrights. Our 2016 seasons mainstage reflects 73% actors of color; 100% playwrights of color, and 75% directors of color. 75% of our directors this year are also female.
We invite you to check out our work in the future!
Tiffany Cothran, Managing Director Crowded Fire Theater
Thanks to the lady who is encouraging donations in her community.
Tom - Don't forget that this is the first election after the Voting Rights Act was gutted earlier this year. There were almost 900 fewer polling places and a number of states with histories of voter suppression did their best to set up as many obstacles as possible. I imagine there were a lot of people who "can't" rather than "don't".
Yeh he won but the popular vote did not vote for him so we do not plan to put up with this Hitler... you get over it ... dig one ditch dig two... old saying or you reap what you sow ... sow hate and you will reap.... sow love and you will reap... some call it karma...
Agree used to be a peace officer and the unions have undermined the authority of these top brass in these departments... In 1980 when I worked as a peace officer ... we had no union and you could be on the street tomorrow unemployed... Unions have jeopardize the safety of citizens and have caused more deep pocket suits against local cities who desperately need these funds to improve education and other services badly needed in communities. Not anti - union but in this instance as it pertains to public safety.... Yes.
The Oakland Police department is no different from many others. Most Police Departments are dysfunctional and detached from the communities they serve not because of the Chief. Departments nationally are held captive by the history and culture of policing. It is the middle managers and command staff who teach departmental norms and defend the "Blue Line" at all cost. When a new Chief is hired, it is usually because of political pressure from the top. The invisible command staff and managers just smile and sit back as the new Chief explains how it will be different. Because they never buy in to the changes and because of unions, they can't be fired or disciplined. They stay under the radar as change fails and another Chief is fired. The Chiefs are the easy targets, but these other folks are where the structural problems reside. Until the new Chief can come in, clean house with authority and install new people, changes will be small and incremental. Every time there is a cop shooting, the first thing we see are Police union representatives defending the cop and vilifying the victim. These unions are out of control as they fight change attempts in city after city. Politicians need to reign in these unions, fold in more community involvement and give the Chief authority to make the structural moves necessary for real change.
No weapon formed against us shall or will prosper... Like we used to say when I was a kid dig one ditch better dig two. Gird up and put on the armor....No weapon....United States and the United Nations will come to a head just like Hitler did if America stays on this path ... the world is watching along with those in America who stand for liberty and justice...
Ms Kahn notes that my comments about Ms Cappio are misplaced. However, my comments were based on the facts related to her actions, not her qualifications on paper, intelligence or network of friends. Ms Kahn offers no response at all on the substance of my comments because she has none. The fact is that in both the E12 st parcel and the coal transfer issue at the Port, her qualifications and experience did not keep her from giving the Mayor and Council improper or illegal recommendations that were ultimately brought to light by the public. A true planning professional at her level should not always say yes to power, but should use his or her experience, professionalism and integrity along with a duty to evaluate the community needs to provide the best recommendations for the public good. Sometimes the answer to politicians is no. In a previous role at the City, Cappio's specific job description was to make sure that Mayor Brown's Measure K program was implemented, no matter what. That meant that everything Jerry wanted, Jerry got. How much experience and professionalism is required Vivian, to say yes to everything that comes through the door?
Keep him home: Have the happiest, merriest, joyfullest, celebration. Marry your boyfriend! Do it for all of us who wish we could be there to celebrate with you, have fun, love you xo
