Re: “Hayward Police Chief: There Is No Video of Fatal Police Shooting of 16-Year-Old Elena Mondragon

Of course, Hayward police department needs to get off their hi horse and get some retraining skills Meaning ETHICS, compassion, patience logics. Because they are so sure of themselves that they have the right person, innocent people are being overlooked and automatically accused judged thrown in jail and now even killed. Re: “Community and Labor Groups Say Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Has Stacked the Planning Commission with Real Estate Industry Reps

If you know your history, you would know that the makeup of the Oakland Planning Commission has been dominated by real estate developers, architects, land use attorneys, economic and urban design professionals at least since the 1970's, if not longer. This did not start with Libby Schaaf and that inference is really unfair. More importantly, the lack of commission membership historically and currently, from the flat lands of East Oakland or West Oakland is overwhelming. There is no question that having some kind of background in economics, architecture, land development or urban design is an advantage. Planning commissioners are tasked with reviewing complex technical reports from applicants and city staff in order to arrive at decisions on development projects and policy. This is not an easy job and many lay citizens would, at least initially, be overwhelmed with the volume and detail of the information expected to be absorbed. With that being said, when the work of the commission is compromised because of conflicts of interest, there is a problem. Without a doubt, members of the commission not working in the development industry will always bring a much needed community perspective and reality check to the public debate. A healthy representative balance of community members is the ideal mix. We should not forget that Planning Commissioners are unpaid volunteers who spend many, many hours reading reports, visiting sites and talking to the public about planning issues. This job requires the type of personal commitment of time and energy that many across the city are not ready to make. It should be no surprise that those who are educated and experienced in related areas of work tend to be the folks most interested. That is true in most cities. The Mayor and the City Council need to make a better effort in reaching out to all communities to identify those that would provide the balanced perspective that the commission needs. It is especially important now, when Oakland is going through an aggressive bubble of land use and demographic changes.

Re: “City of Livermore Continues To Hide Records Related To Former Police Officer Accused Of Sex Crimes In 'Celeste Guap' Case

I'm no fan of cops. I am a fan or process.

Were the accused in this anyone BUT, law enforcement Burris would be screaming at the top of his lungs to close off an investigation conducted in this manner.

Please note, I said accused. Innocent until proven guilty? And you don't get to go fishing to prove guilt; else the riders would still be in operation.

Re: “Oakland's Poorest Neighborhoods Will Be The Most Susceptible to Flooding Due To Climate Change And Sea-Level Rise

Yes, the Oakland low lands are screwed... So are Long Island, Martinez, Concord and Miami Beach (all of Florida for that matter, but is THAT a loss, really?).

Rising sea level WILL effect everyone not just "the most vulnerable" (jeeze! what an emotionally manipulative string to pull). It won't matter if you have money or privilege or not. Everyone get's screwed. Blatantly manipulative attempts like this cost credibility. They don't motivate anyone.

And please do notice, I say will, not if.

Re: “Community and Labor Groups Say Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Has Stacked the Planning Commission with Real Estate Industry Reps

I'm not too sure where else developers or architects (landscape included) tend to work BUT in the that industry.

Again, a half written, innuendo laden partisan smear; without even a pretense of solutions. Just "you did it wrong!!!!!"

Re: “Community and Labor Groups Say Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Has Stacked the Planning Commission with Real Estate Industry Reps

Why even bother to have the pretense of a Planning Commission?

Re: “Queer Camp!" Family Camp

I love Queer Camp!

I attended a few years ago to one of the first weekend camps that was held. I found myself in a wonderful balance of childhood activities like lanyards and tie-dye along with adult discussion sessions around family connections, self worth & cultural diversity. Hiking and dancing, music and singing, so many chances to be creative and to find my true self.

I highly recommend attending Queer Camp, regardless of your age and orientation. It's a welcoming place for all people.

Re: “Ethiopian Café Anfilo in Oakland, Where The Food Is As Strong And Bold As The Coffee

the restaurants are more than they were a couple of decades ago when i tried the coffee in what seemed to be the only one on telegraph avenue. i have ethiopian ancestors. i am more sure of ancestors ethiopian than i am descendants as the older people in my family seem to connect easier in the african area than the younger generations in my family. my family is literally all over the san francisco bay area, especially oakland.

Re: “Oakland's Poorest Neighborhoods Will Be The Most Susceptible to Flooding Due To Climate Change And Sea-Level Rise

Despite the likelihood of rising sea levels affecting low-lying neighborhoods in far fewer than 100 years, planning ahead is hardly a task for which Oakland's government is prepared.

Looking ahead even one year regarding serious social and environmental problems would be most unusual for Oakland.

Of course our pols do look ahead at their coming elections. Within a few months of being elected, our current Mayor was busily raising money for her next campaign. Her out-of-town developer sponsors are taking no chances.

Re: “Oakland's Poorest Neighborhoods Will Be The Most Susceptible to Flooding Due To Climate Change And Sea-Level Rise

"Oakland's Poorest Neighborhoods Will Be The Most Susceptible....by the end of the century".... Hmm... that is some 83 years from now.
I'm sure that the disadvantaged residents of those neighborhoods would place this important concern at about #147 on their list of potential problems they will have over the next 60 years.

Heck by that time nearly ALL of those neighborhoods will have been gentrified and re-gentrified... Thus the number of poor in those neighborhoods will be reduced to near zero.,
It will be entirely a upper middle class or wealthy person's problem, not affecting more than a handful of poor people.

As far as poor people go this rising sea level in Oakland neighborhoods is a non issue for decades to come.

Jean, here in the East Bay we don't say "the 880" and "the 580." That's so L.A.

Re: “Oakland's Poorest Neighborhoods Will Be The Most Susceptible to Flooding Due To Climate Change And Sea-Level Rise

Excellent article. Tepperman's research on the hazards to the East Bay's most vulnerable communities is as disturbing as it is excellent. Luckily, there are many activists like Margaret Gordon and Brian Beveridge in these communities, aware of the threats and working to build sustainability. But it will take all of us in the East Bay to prepare for what's coming.

Re: “Oakland's Poorest Neighborhoods Will Be The Most Susceptible to Flooding Due To Climate Change And Sea-Level Rise

As I have been saying since the '70s, it's time to dike & lock the Golden Gate, protecting infrastructure & property all the way to Sacramento. The water from the Delta should be canaled back to the southland (not tunnels). It's cheaper and easier on the environment. Homeland Security should be on board as it protects our Bay from nefarious activity. Historically, the Bay was fresh until about 8000 years ago, when the fading Ice Age caused enough ocean rise to wipe out the waterfall (comparable to Niagara) and made the Bay what it is today. linus.hollis@gmail.com
