Re: “Congresswoman Barbara Lee Discusses Trump's First Week As President

I am yet to see what Barbara Lee has ever accomplished besides talking and giving interviews to a receptive and fawning press. Oakland has continued to have increased crime, poor schools, numerous out of wedlock births, and increased poverty for the African American community. What has she done for the African American people -- NOTHING. She is all talk and no action. Nothing creative. Nothing of value. Yet, the un-thinking electorate votes her in year after year. What a shame.

Re: “Time To #DeleteUber In Oakland

Note that Lyft also continued to serve JFK during the strike, and also turned off their surge pricing.

Historically surge pricing has been reviled in times of need; in fact I saw many comments before Uber's announcement re: turning off surge pricing saying how gross it would be for surge pricing to be ON during the strike. It would have resulted in Uber making *more* money on the backs of the strikers, not less.

I am not here to defend Uber beyond this. It just galls me when folks I generally agree with lose their critical facilities when it suite their world views. :(

Too bad southern Thai food isn't being served in the flats and at a more reasonable price.

Re: “Time To #DeleteUber In Oakland

@Dan De'Ata, UBER hasn't done anything to bring downtown Oakland back to life. Maybe you haven't noticed that their building hasn't even opened yet? Kinda hard to revitalize if you're not even present and when they do open they will most likely dodge taxes like they do everywhere else. Some revitalization!
Downtown Oakland has seen great things happen because of the arts, artists, and galleries. Then guess what happened? They're being pushed out to make way for tech companies and the high end restaurants that cater to their employees. The New Oakland completely disregards all the intrepid artists and working and middle class people who've been here for decades. And calling people "knucklehead" for disagreeing with your views? Pure genius.

Re: “Oakland Asks Judge to Throw Out Coal Lawsuit

Surely it is time for Phil to move forward and work on his project without wasting time and money on this stupid litigation. It is obvious that coal is on the way out as an energy source. China has realized that particulates in the air are making their cities toxic. Considering that he is a dedicated scuba diver who loves clear waters, Phil is paradoxically unwise on this issue. The almighty dollar is not a good reason to poison us nor our planet.

Re: “Time To #DeleteUber In Oakland

Some people have praised with loving kindness Uber for making a financial decision that no doubt benefited them because of the perks and tax breaks they would receive. They have to admit it was not because the company counted how many Oaklanders were using Uber. But if they seriously worried about the city's economy, why are they not protesting all the Federal dollars that Trumputin will retract from Oakland for being a sanctuary city?

Re: “Time To #DeleteUber In Oakland

How could anyone possibly oppose one of the largest injections of revenue and jobs our city has seen in decades? There are many more constructive ways to address concerns such as this besides running Uber out of town...beginning with engaging in a dialog with company leadership (which, by every indication, they are more than willing to do!)

Re: “Hawker Fare Aims to Go Out With a Bang

Agree with the first three commenters...and also a white boomer "gentrifier." I chose Oakland because I love it. Mostly its diversity and food scene. I don't want another San Francisco, as cool as it is to have the city across the bay accessible.

Re: “Architect Eugene Tssui Might Be the Most Interesting Man in the East Bay

--"When Tssui first drew up his plans for the Ultima Tower in 1991, he estimated that the project would cost $150 billion and would take 25 years to complete. What public official would want to make that pitch to the people? "

That's no problem, he should talk to Gov. Jerry Brown.
He already sold a similar project to the people... its called California High Speed Rail. Jerry's "high-speed" rail could run from termite-mound to termite-mound. Just 40 of them could house the entire population of California...(a 21st Century version of the California Missions)

Re: “Time To #DeleteUber In Oakland

I canceled my Uber account on Sunday and opened a Lyft account. But I did so reluctantly because my fellow-Oaklanders are as important to me as immigrants and refugees. So I found this article all too typical of EBX's simplistic black and white view of the world.

I canceled my account to make a point about the actions of Uber's CEO, despite knowing that the company will provide jobs and public tax revenues for my city. I canceled my account despite suspecting that many people who work for Uber feel exactly the way I do about immigrants and President Gaslight Anus Mouth.

My hope is to influence the future behavior of Travis Kalinick. I hope that he will give me a reason to return my business to Uber someday. I would advise Oaklanders to tell Uber exactly how you feel. Vote with your wallet. And watch for changes. But understand that there's gray in the world before wish Uber will go elsewhere. Don't cut off our noses to spite your face.

Re: “Time To #DeleteUber In Oakland

Trump is happy to support his Uber friends. They are just as against worker's protection, rider protection and fairness as the Trumputin. We just have to get over thinking that it's always okay to get the best deal and at the same time think we can stick with good values. The Taxi drivers aren't playing us, those that want us to turn a blind eye to exploitation and the destruction of any consumer protections always try to pit us against each other.

Re: “Time To #DeleteUber In Oakland

Jay Youngdahl, what a knucklehead...
Oh great, chase Uber out of Oakland. A company that is finally bringing downtown back to life after decades of being a wasted desert in the middle of a booming Bay Area.
With more insane suggestions we can assure everyone Oakland will sleep through the next 20 years, devoid of improvement, jobs, and tax revenue.
Uber moving to Oakland is a far greater event than even saving the Raiders, A's, and Warriors would be.
Oakland is finally peeking its head out from doom and dispair and here we have Jay Youngdahl trying to drag the city down again.

Re: “Time To #DeleteUber In Oakland

Lyft management also has deep ties to the new administration. Be careful on deleting Uber because Lyft management is questionable as well in the extreme - it seems that this was covered up preemptively by the ACLU donation - you don't have to dig very deep on Google to find this: http://freebeacon.com/issues/lyft-goes-ant… I for one will continue to use both services when needed until the news is more horrible than what I'm reading here. Who is to say that commercial Taxicab companies do not support (he who shall remain nameless). Uber and Lyft are great services for our many young people (and older people as well) "out on the town" needing a safe ride home from any location LATE and AFTER DARK after a fun evening. #notmypresident

You're being played by the taxi lobby. Opposing the creation of 3000 new jobs in Oakland is a privileged thing to do.

The Trumpization of America marches on with money and homogenization and privilege as the themes. Keep 'em out if they're different. Keep out their amazing talents that truly made America great. More white bread please. Make American White again. And I'm a white baby boomer who brags about Oaktown and our amazing diversity of people and food. Sad, Boring. Tears.

Re: “Time To #DeleteUber In Oakland

Kudos to EBX for exposing Uber for what they really are. When Uber first came on the scene, everyone jumped on their bandwagon, touting them as an example of the "new economy". I have never seen such outright media spin of the facts. The facts are that Uber from it's inception, has continually shown that their business model is based on greed, lies and a refusal to follow rules others in their industry are forced to follow. Despite the rogue business activities, Uber was embraced by many, including Mayor Libby Schaaf, desperate to have positive headlines of any kind during her struggling early term as Mayor. The facts on the ground say that Uber was getting rich on the backs of hard working cab drivers and their own employees. Yes Uber, I said employees. Despite Uber insisting that they are a car service, they own no cars and are not legally liable for insuring their drivers or customers. Uber is not and never was a sustainable business model. They are now paying millions of dollars in fines and settlements all over the country and have been banned in several cities around the world. No wonder they support Trump, who believes that all regulations are bad for business. Oakland should stand for livable wages, public safety and competitive business practices for all those in the same industry. Once again Mayor Schaaf your ready, shoot, aim style of decision making is exposed.
