Re: “These Bay Area Businesses Want to Build Trump's Border Wall

The American Steel "Studios" you mentioned recently changed ownership in October 2016. I'd like to point out that the NEW owners of the American Steel building did not acquire the use of the name "American Steel Studios" and their business choices do not represent the artists and other tenants there.
The building itself is now called "American Steel" and the property management company is Ventura Parners, who I'm pretty sure are NOT placing bids on building a border wall. Tenants there do not know the identity of actual owners so don't bother asking.
However, the PREVIOUS OWNER of the building is more likely to be the "bidder" of a border wall since he is a known racist and Trump supporter which is a fact, not my opinion.
He owns half of West Oakland industrial land so, I'm sure you can easily find his name.
But, I strongly suggest you get all your research information straight before bashing the reputation of a collection of underappreciated local artists and fabricators, or the real estate management company that takes care of them.

Re: “Skate Or DIY: Why Is It So Damn Hard To Build A Skate Park In Oakland?

There is a legal skate park in this neighborhood already - the opposite end of the neighborhood - but still - Town Park at 18th near Poplar is legal and not that far - particularly if you are on wheels already...

Re: “These Bay Area Businesses Want to Build Trump's Border Wall

American Steel Studios is a collective of some 300 individual artists not a singular business that could or would take on such a project. I think you just got pranked. Better reporting please. And if some artist or business inside Am Steel did agree I would fully support boycotting them.

Re: “Oakland Officials Question Police Partnerships with Federal Immigration Agents and FBI

Just points to the need for effective oversight of the police. We have a new chief. Will she do it? Let's see.

Re: “Developer Stiffs City on Permits for West Oakland Condo Project

As a neighbor I could care less about a sidewalk no-one walks on. I am more concerned about the heroin camp under the freeway, now that we have gotten rid of the Alliance problem. I love how you throw about the term "developer" as if it is a four letter word. Good job on uncovering this HUGE conspiracy tied to both the mayor and the governor! Strong work. This Protopappas character MUST be someone to watch out for if he is a "developer" and has friends and connections. He must have used those extensive connections to sidestep this incredible flaunting of the this fake news?

Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

I'm having trouble buying these two claims:

* That the Dimond's "older residents" (or any patrons, really) who went to McDonald's to get a "simple meal" and take a load off are now flocking to The Veg Hub for $10+ vegan meat analog sandwiches.

* That the typical McDonald's customer "might actually want to eat" the same.

I mean, sure, there may be some folks who would rather eat vegan fake meat than McD's and have been eating Quarter Pounders in despair, waiting desperately for such a place to open in the 'hood... (because for some reason they can't travel outside the Dimond to find the food they really want???). And I'm not defending McD's in any way here. Just saying I find these statements really, REALLY hard to believe. Got any sources, Luke Tsai?

Re: “Letters of the Week: 'Baconslut,' Single-Payer Health Care, and More

Jerry. How old are you? Have you ever served in the military? Worked as a paramedic? Assisted in a soup kitchen? I hope you provide yourself with the opportunity to engage with the human race as a complete human, to experience him/she/their/it suffering first hand. Your nonchalant critiques are cruel.

Re: “Town Business: A New Police Headquarters. Does Oakland Have the Money?

The police building is pretty poor, but the roads we need to travel on to get there are even worse. I think our roads are a crime, and I should file a police report sometimes. Oakland tax payers voted to tax themselves for infrastructure improvements. How about the city council discuss putting people to work on the roads to get to the new building before they build the building?

Re: “Town Business: A New Police Headquarters. Does Oakland Have the Money?

New OPD headquarters and crime lab might be somewhat of an easier sell to sales and property taxpayers if Oakland could show us that crime is steadily improving (that means fewer crimes!).

Otherwise this looks like yet another typical big financial surprise for the complacent citizenry of Oakland. I won't mention the word "pensions."

Yet there could be some creative thinking.

A new Trump tower where OPD Admin now sits. Forty or fifty stories with a new cop shop just above the retail at street level. Kinda like where developers like to put the affordable housing. Could be a win-win (developers and cops win).

How about including a new cop shop with a new Raiders' stadium project? If we're willing to give them $200 million in infrastructure, they could give us a $200 million cop shop. Could be tourist draw, too. Another win-win.

Re: “Developer Stiffs City on Permits for West Oakland Condo Project

Oakland should be so lucky to take a chance on this dump. This location is where I pretend, to stop.

Re: “Developer Stiffs City on Permits for West Oakland Condo Project

Clearly, EBX has reached the peak of investigative journalism. After all, "The failure to obtain permits could cost the city up to several thousand dollars, depending on how many days the street is obstructed. "

Several thousand, OMG!

And, further, the developer knows other people and even has friends.

This is right up there with the works of Bernstein and Woodward. Maybe they will make a movie - All the Developer's Men. Oops, no, that is taken already by the orange guy who is in DC right now. They will come up with something else for this political thriller.

Re: “Togi's Serves Real Mongolian Food

We just had their beef and noodle dish with a cabbage salad for dinner and it was great! The noodles are fresh and peppery and one order fed us both. We ordered take out, and brought it home. Sometimes it just beats cooking after a nice walk!

Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

"Too bad about the religious beliefs"? Next, we'll be hearing the over-used (and much abused) word "hate."

I'm gay, and I'll enjoy the food, even if I can't get married in Rev. Chew's church. I won't resent his beliefs about human sexuality if he won't resent mine.

Would he refuse to serve me if I came in with a boyfriend? If so, he has a problem -- but I somehow doubt that would be the case.

Live and let live.

Re: “Should The Next Oakland Unified Schools Superintendent Be Homegrown?

The charter comments are not based in reality. Can you site your data that supports the anti-charter comments? Close to 1/3 of Oakland public school students attend charters. Growing for sure.

Re: “The Veg Hub in Oakland Cooks Fake Meat for the People

I was excited that a vegan restaurant was opening in my area, only to find that it was mainly focused on soy soy and more soy based foods. I consider myself a healthy vegan, and all the mentions of salty in your article are another reason I could never eat those types of foods. That being said, they do seem to have a fresh salad bar, which could save a trip to Whole Foods when my fridge is low on the stuff. There are all kinds of vegans, but the fact that they are not killing the animals is a good thing. Too bad about the religious beliefs.

This has been a problem for years, and EBX only cares when they dredge up a Schaaf connection? My lord.

Re: “Developer Stiffs City on Permits for West Oakland Condo Project

The permits for sidewalk and street closures were likely required in the conditions of approval as deferred permits, which the contractor is often in charge of procuring before work proceeds. At the time of building permit approval, you cannot be sure of exactly when a sidewalk and street will need to be closed.

Re: “Developer Stiffs City on Permits for West Oakland Condo Project

"Protopappas is also a close friend of Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and Gov. Jerry Brown. He has served as political campaign fundraiser for both."

I think we're not supposed to judge people by their friends. Or their fundraisers.
