Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
reading express since it began. thanks for being here. this movement is not going away, and anyone who thinks its misplaced or just a bunch of sore losers, i hope you are brave enough to admit you were wrong after these deplorable people and their false god have brought our country to near ruin. cause thats what its gonna take, now, for america to come back. we are going to hit a bottom so hard it will scare you nearly to death. many will die, which i do not want or relish. many will commit suicide. families will be torn asunder. our national security will suffer greatly. only those who take a principled stand against him and his monsters will be able to stand proud afterwards and say "i was right when everyone else was wrong".
Right after joining hands... jump in.
Protesting Trump is about protesting the hateful rhetoric he promoted. It shows solidarity- that we will not sit by and watch our neighbors be bullied or harassed.
I want to believe that not everyone who voted for Trump was racist - those people should come and stand with us today.
I love it how Trump fans pop up everywhere, cementing with their diction and attitude the notion that the not-so-swift mean people have won this round.
When I was young, I was more egotistical but not out-spoken like Donald Trump. As i got older, the people I loved died and I was faced with a new sense of responsibility. My actions reflected what was really in my heart - a need to help people and contribute toward the betterment of society. I sense that in Trump.I pray for a miracle and am optimistic.
The republican crybabies in congress kept crying for 8 years after Obama was elected (twice). They held their breath, preventing any legislation, until he left. I say that Democrats give in too easily.
I will be there. I am so disillusioned in our democratic process after this election. I know there is not much we can do but protest while we can. I fear that our First Amendment rights will be gone along with many other civil rights. I could barely face my students on Weds., Nov 9. How do I tell my 18-year-old students or my immigrant students who just became citizens that their votes matter when they believed in America and voted for the very first time and this happened? The only true thing Trump ever said is that this election is rigged.
I wasnt happy when Obama won and swore it was by some tricky means or scam election but did I break stuff or riot? No. Noone did.We just grumbled amongst ourselves as normal non criminal people do but these unAmerican vigilante terrorist like riots have got to stop now.The SWAT team or someone should take control of these mobs actions asap.Suck it up liberals crybabies minorities democrats or whoever makes up these criminal mobs and accept the same democracy that put that POS Obama in office PERIOD
If I was close, I'd come with 50,000 safety pins..There's a LOT of babies that need to be diapered I guess...
I do not believe this out cry has anything to do with being a sore loser. My grandson broke into tears when he realized Trump won the election, he wasn't being a sore loser. People are worried, scared, and confused. They don't know where to go for help or how to respond to this event. I know I sure do not know what to think.... I know that most of the people that voted for Mr. Trump are good people but he seems so unamerican, so full of hate. In all my many years I would have never believed such a person would be our president. I have been so depressed that I am hoping that by taking part in "hands around the Lake" and voicing my pain I will be able to let it go and move on.
ajax you're lying obviously
And instead of blaming liberals or democrats or Hillary supporters or anarchists, the mayor and the media blame Trump? I don' remember republicans rioting in the streets or burning cars or breaking windows in Oakland or advocating killing the president when Obama was elected.
So a bunch of criminals break windows of innocent business owners and advocate the assasination of the duly elected president and the mayor of Oakland sympathizes with them? Amazing.
Come join us
I didn't vote for Trump, but after watching the sore losers protest, I now wish I did.
Send a bill for repairs to the Donald. Since he's so rich, he should be paying for the damage he is causing to our nation for hijacking democracy the way he has just to have a platform for his vitriol and hatred.
I keep thinking about bringing safety pins tomorrow for this event and linking them to safety pins of others, and creating a giant, circular chain of safety pins that would symbolize the resolve of Oaklanders to protect those threatened or attacked by Trump followers and policies. We could donate it to the Oakland Museum of California after the event to represent intent of the people.
It's not a poor tax and working out doesn't fight obesity. Diet is the only thing that controls obesity. This is a lifestyle tax. If you choose to live an unhealthy lifestyle you must pay higher taxes. Otherwise when you get the inevitable diseases that come as a result of your poor life choices you will be a burden on healthy taxpayers. Surgery drinks & smoking tobacco are in no way necessities. They are unhealthy optional luxury indulgences that lead to diseases. Tax payers shouldn't have to pay for others bad choices.
A citizen's Right of peaceful protest is in the Constitution. There is no Right to break the windows of businesses, start fires, write grafitti on sidewalks and buildings, to encourage confrontation and block Freeways.
We have worked so hard to make Oakland a great place to live and work. It is starting to blossom. Art gallaries, restaurants, new businesses, jobs and more to come. Supposedly youre protesting Donald Trump. He does not live in Oakland. Most residents do not support these violent protests. Please, respect your city, our city and the people who live here. C.Burd
The final quote from Krista Gulbransen makes me feel uneasy; it almost sounds like a veiled threat. My assumption in voting for Measure U1 was that the tax was significant but not unsustainablethat profit margins would cover a large part of the cash going to taxes. Is there any way of measuring the real effect that this will have on landlords ability to make repairs and upgrades to old buildings? Aren't there laws on the books to ensure that necessary maintenance is done?
Sincerely, someone who lives in an old building in Berkeley.
P.S. it strikes me that 166% is a very misleading and alarmist way of explaining a tax hike from 1.08% to 2.88%.
