Oakland, Berkeley, And East Bay News, Events, Restaurants, Music, & Arts
If you have met Paul Hayward you will know that hospitality is what will entice people back to Overland. The food will be inventive and delicious but the welcome and the overall experience will make Overland a cornerstone of the burgeoning Jack London square and surrounding area. I first met Paul in 2008 and again in 2014, his warmth and charm will win you over and put you at the ease you normally associate with family. Get down to this bar and witness it for yourself, then tell your friends... you will be a part of History.
good reveiw and went around the corner from my house to Chick and Tea and man that was one good ,spicey piece of chicken. Of course I threw a bit of siracha on it, but hella tasty and my tea was good.Welcome to Temescal Frank!!
I totally disagree with the opinion stated above. I come a few time, and the food is delicious. The service is very good too.
friendly folks. i liked the Kalua Pork, but the spare ribs were thin cut and not worth it at all.
@Ruby, i also had the musubi. i think the comment on the rice being "medium-grain sushi rice" was more that it was medium-grain, like you see in sushi. it's not vinegared like you'd see in nigiri sushi
Great review! I loved the sentence about the affectionate couple and the flock of middle school girls. Really evoked Taiwan for me!
Checked it out the other night, and was pretty disappointed. The Szechwan dishes that we are familiar with from China Village had little distinctive character: The pork shoulder looked like China Village's (see top photo in this article), but the meat was dry, as if it had been slightly undercooked and then removed from its braising liquid for a time. (And, like Luke Tsai, we found the "spicy" moniker wholly undeserved ... what we detected was a heavy hand with the five-spice.) The wok-charred cabbage that Tsai praises was limp, not very smoky, and overwhelmed by the black vinegar dosed on the finished dish -- bleccch. A spicy stir-fried chicken dish had wonderful color and was perfectly cooked, but lacked savor. The only real success was the braised eggplant, which my wife very much enjoyed.

She is talking about Pure innocence idiot! The blank white page that was her mind until the schizophrenic chaos in her brain began. Get a clue!
"I had this pure life, which in my mind is white," she said.
Get the fuck out.
The rice in genuine spam musubi is not sushi rice -- i.e. not flavored with vinegar-sugar-salt but with salt only.
Dis tacs is gut o may got only problem hay jab one maricon uglie an madafaker pans on
Segue, information is freedom... so how about restaurants have to tell you (along with nutrition facts) the environmental impact of their dishes. We only have one Mother Earth folks!
(Oh, Chawhaus is good, pricey, but good and the staff is extremely conscientious)
Considering that California is still in a drought, it would be lovely if the East Bay Express did their part by not 'featuring' meat-centered restaurants. After all, approx. 47% of all water usage in Cali is animal agriculture. It's like the Express exists in a space bubble, separate from Earth, but the reality is that we are all in this together. People still eat meat and they still drive cars and that's pretty much why we're in the mess that we're in now, but people also smoke cigarettes and that doesn't mean that you glorify it, just because people are doing it. I know you're trying to be 'fair and balanced' in your reporting, and that's honorable, but the reality is that if the journalists have their heads in the sand, we're ALL screwed. Just sayin'...
Oakland is no more. Fruitvale, San Antonio, Eastlakecare the next immigrant neighborhoods to fall.

I am a local and am very happy with Sequoias.
There was much buzz about this place in the neighborhood before they opened up and I wondered if they could meet expecations.
They definitely have.
The homefries are unsurpassed.
