I'm British and recently holidayed in California, and I took a couple of bags of Bhooja King snacks home for my husband, who loves spicy snacks Wow! I wish I'd bought 10 bags!

I wanted to add , I find the following three restaurants wonderful and very sensitive to the Gluten allergic.
Mariposa's is our favorite, not that its really a resturant more of a bakery really, but great on the go for a slice of pizza or hot cocoa and a delicious steamy garlic bagel. And the owner Pattie is a sweetheart. We buy a lot of are bakery staples from her.

And the OUTBACK Restaurant in Concord is the very best team I experienced for sensitivity to my needs , as well as attention to detail . The one in Pinole damn near killed me twice.

And the PFChangs in Emmeryville is stellar. JUST be careful to order only from the Gluten free menu. We once had a large party and people were ordering from not only the gluten free, but also the regular menu. And for some reason I had the tastiest Singapore Street Noodles I have ever eaten there, that are listed on the gluten free menu, ended me up in the bathroom for the duration of the meal, ( no pun intended). I have had the noodles several times before and they never bothered me, but this time they had that special sizzling WOK flavor, so I should have known better.

Beware- Rick & Ann's IS NOT GLUTEN FREE, I called ahead TWICE and they said they understood and accommodate people with a gluten allergy all the time, and when we got there I again spoke to the hostess who was very nice. BUT- after waiting TWO HOURS, we finally get a table and the waitress doesn't understand why I don't want my ' gluten free' pancake made on the same grill where the wheat pancakes were made, she spoke to the chef who says they do it all the time AND then tries to talk me into ordering the tofu scramble that is made with soy sauce! I asked her , "do you mean " WHEAT FREE TAMARI ? " , SHE SAYS NO , SOY Sauce. And then I tell her ," gluten allergic people can't have soy sauce", she argues with me and saysv" why not ? Its made from soy beans . " , and rolls her eyes at me! Well we of course left starving and pissed.

You should have mentioned that there is a big "breaking of bread" get-together where family and friends are invited to share a "pan de muerto". During this simple evening, the bread is cut into even portions for all the guests and then served with coffee, hot chocolate or "atole" (a hot pudding-like drink). The guest(s) who gets the piece with the small hidden toy (ususally a baby that represents Baby Jesus) will have to host another get-together on February 2nd of the following year (El Dia de la Candelaria).

I was so happy to come across your informative stories shedding light on Celiacs. I have know I have it for 10 years. On top of celiacs I am allergice to eggs, dairy and yeast. I also cannot successfully digest nut or seed butters...I do not know if it's the yeast in the nuts/fruits or the fact my villi aren't strong enough to handle the heaviness of the butters...but I end of with a yeast infection type breakout on my face and it's not pretty. I was one of the overweight types. I lost a lot of weight after I diagnosed myself with it (with the assistance of a nutricianist). I have been able to maintain a healthy weight for years now as long as I take really god care of myself. It is sooo hard even after all this time. I was really sick after something triggered some horrible reactions to everything I was eating at age 23. I was projectile vomitting, had horrible skin issues and stomach pain. I worked at a health food store at this time and believe it is what was my saving grace. I was able to discover new foods and read all about it, daily. I read stories in magazines and online but none of them ever tell of the horrible effect is can have on your health. I was glad to see you actually touch on it in your stories. Some things that people may not be aware of is that it's not only the foods you eat, it is the products you use. You quite simply CANNOT allow gluten (also found in oat which you neglect to mention once in your pieces) into your blood stream...so even your beauty/body products need to be gluten free. Dessert Essence has introduced a yummy line of gluten free shampoos and conditioners and Burts Bees has a great gluten free body wash. The mineral make-ups are mostly gluten free as well. Quinoa is a saving grace for protein and grain suppliment; the four, though expensive makes yummy breads and muffins. People need to beware of additives in products and chemicals because they can be grain derived. I have to admit that I cheat...it's so hard not to. I do it out of frustration. I don't go eating an entire piece of cake or a slice of pizza, just a nibble once in a great while. I react to so many things...even the gluten free baking items effect me sometimes. Thank you for all of the resources such as local eateries which cater to our needs. I did notice that Pasta Pomadoro still lists the gluten free pasta on their menus...I am so bummed they don't provide it...I was excited! Thank you for that information. Enjoy, Stacey Louiso
