Re: “Sista Sandwich Allows Gluten-Free Diners to Grab and Go

This looks like a great start. I'm concerned about cross-contamination and xanthan gum. Nice work!

Re: “Oregon Governor Approves Medical Marijuana for PTSD

Current drug PTSD treatment for Veterans found ineffective.

Eli Lilly made $70 billion on the Zyprexa franchise.Lilly was fined $1.4 billion for Zyprexa fraud!
The atypical antipsychotics (Zyprexa,Risperdal,Seroquel) are like a 'synthetic' Thorazine, only they cost ten times more than the old fashioned typical antipsychotics.
These newer generation drugs still pack their list of side effects like diabetes for the user. All these drugs work as so called 'major tranquilizers'.This can be a contradiction with PTSD suffers as we are hyper vigilant and feel uncomfortable with a drug that puts you to sleep and makes you sluggish.
That's why drugs like Zyprexa don't work for PTSD survivors like myself.

Re: “Getting Your Hands Dirty at Hang Ten Boiler

A foodie friend of mine told me about this spot and well, we essentially raved about the Hang Ten sauce. If you prefer your seafood fried, they've got you covered. For meat-beaus, you're in the right place since they offer chicken, steak, short ribs, pork cleaves & more. We had a ton of fun! I enjoyed meeting everyone and getting messy with the crawfish boil.

Re: “NLRB Rules in Favor of Oakland Airport Workers

Is the NLRB even legally constituted today? If challenged, will it even be able to show that it has the authority to make any rulings?

Robert is probably right; "most employers know they will lose"....but that seems to speak more to the fairness (or lack thereof) of the board than anything else. Perhaps it's time that we, as a nation, simply get artificial creations like the NLRB our of the natural free market process. You'd think after the examples of massive unemployment that unions have presented this country, people would start realizing some elemental truths....the primary one being is that if you spit in the face of employers, they probably aren't going to increase their employment.

Re: “Privatizing UC Instruction

I did not think that I'd see in my relatively short lifetime the full transition of higher education from public institution to industry (complete with a "just in time" contingent faculty), and then to automation and outsourcing. Seems like the aspiration is "do more with less" but for most of us it translates to an imperative "do more, get less." I guess when you have a hammer everything looks conveniently like a nail, and we've got MBAs eagerly pounding all over our economy. But hey at least we can still spend on all those nifty capital projects on campus, right? Then at least we can still look world class. Table tennis on the green roof, anyone?

I can't say my run-ins with online courses have been worth the same as real world classes, but I'm sure they've got all sorts of clever new *tools* to edutain the students.

Re: “NLRB Rules in Favor of Oakland Airport Workers

The Port may not have given the restaurants a hearing, since its order was administrative. What the restaurants may find, though, if they appeal, is that the state proceedings are now pre-empted by the NLRB. They may never get a state hearing, but the NLRB will give them one. And, assuming the evidence already found by the Port is good, an NLRB violation could in the long term result in a court order. Sure, it may take time. But...the NLRB...if it sees defiance...may get a temporary injunction to put these employees back to work--with backpay.

“Same claims, different forum,” said Foster. (In other words, same ol' same ol' breaking the law/ retaliation/ intimidation against workers. Let's remember who's doing what here.)

Re: “NLRB Rules in Favor of Oakland Airport Workers

Same ol, same ol with NLRB. I've been there done that, it's a three ring circus with no hope for a fair forum. In fact, I think most employers know they will lose but have to go through the motions. I'm sure if they could they would jail most employers based on the lies and half-truths presented by the employees and their ambulance-chaser attorneys, that is until they ran out of employers to jail or intimidate. Hang tough CMC & Alimson and I'm sure the battle you are going through is being closely monitored by other employers at the Port of Oakland. The Port of Oakland is no prize and if you want an example look at the Jack London Square ghost town thanks to the mis-management of the Port of Oakland.

Re: “Different Pets for Different Folks

Too bad that you list East Bay Vivarium as a source for pet rats. If you look at their website, the only way they list rats is as feeders for reptiles. There are at least two rescue groups in the bay area that are better choices if you love rats: http://www.rattieratz.com/ and http://www.northstarrescue.org/

Re: “Corrections for the Week of June 5, 2013

You keep letting Fire Fighters slide by while focusing on cops. Fire fighters rescue kittens and risk their lives in illegal grow houses. But that should not exempt them from a hard look at what we pay them, any more than we should exempt non-sworn maintenance people, parks and rec, clerks, and especially managers in all departments.

Re: “Rich, Black, Flunking

I am a 2010 black male high school graduate who did crappy in a middle class predominately white but mixed High School; then did good in an even more mixed Community College (graduated with an Associate Degree) and then transferred straight to a diverse and somewhat prestigious University and am on my way to graduating with honors with a BS degree and then going to grad school. Here are my reasons why I did crappy in High School and then excelled afterwards:

1. If you try hard and do well then your reward is to be enrolled in Honors/AP courses that have zero to very little black students, where you will have a harder time fitting in (which is HUGE deal in high school).

2. Too much exposure to a victim mentality. As a black kid, I was exposed to so many ppl saying "aint no white man gonna hire us", "yeah, they racist, they dont even give us a chance", "blacks have to work 10000000x harder", etc. Even though some of this may be true to an extent, this is VERY discouraging once you hear this over and over and over again from all these different sources and makes you not even want to bother getting good grades to be [supposedly] treated like garbage in the corporate world.

3. African American youth culture DOES NOT value education. They see the actual academic content as something white and irrelevant; WHICH IS TRUE since almost all course content are about whites (and to a lesser extent: asians) so whites&asians could relate to the content MUCH easier since they see their own faces. Plus, black culture in general is just much more laid back

4. Social expectations of Black people. It's been proven that when somebody is expected to behave in a certain way then they're more likely to fulill that role. And let's be real, society's expectations of blacks are very low and awful.

5. Adult College Grad rates by race are different: Even though my town was solidly middle class (and the census put all race's median household incomes at around the same), the black adult college grad rate was still somewhat lower than the white adult grad rate. I honestly had no clue that AP classes even existed in HS since my parents were not college grads and they couldn't guide me along the way and show me the benefit of taking them (like graduating quicker). **It would be interesting to see the educational attainment by race in Shaker Heights; sometimes there are disparities within towns**

I also agree with his points about:
- Mistrust in school system (my parents mistrusted all of the school systems that I attended so I developed subconscious negative feelings towards it and refused to dedicate so much time towards something that had no respect for me)

- Black Americans being more likely to come from an unstable home
