Re: “The Trouble with Kaiser's Technology

It is important that the nurses "on the ground" speak up for their patients. Before systems are put in place they should be fully vetted by the nurses who will be using them and adjusted with their feedback. Patient safety is suffering from the rush to incorporate the latest technology without the prerequisite ethical and functional review from the registered nurse clinical staff. I am a registered nurse and I see this happening daily.Big data and technology do not heal. Direct care nurses save lives ! Patients not profits are nurses priority..

Re: “What Happened to the Chron's Paywall?

I just went to the SF Chronicle, and the "firewall" is up again! $99 for a full year. I occasionally enjoy going there for SF stories, but I ain't gonna pay that money for access.

Re: “Inspections from Hell

The house on Cedar St. was inhabited by a "friend" of Doherty's with extended family who lived like squatters in the house. Every now and then, they'd replace the tarp on the roof, but it was my understanding that the top floor unit was uninhabitable due to water damage. During that time there were two fires. The first time, I personally called the fire dept., but the occupants would not allow the fire dept in and put the fireplace fire out themselves. I mentioned this to a neighbor, and he explained that if the fire dept went in, the building would be inspected and red tagged and they'd have to move. They continued to use the fireplace as the primary heating source as the heating didn't work even though a child and a disabled woman lived in the house. 7 years later, it caught fire again, (2nd chimney fire) and was red tagged after the fire dept put the fire out. Everyone got out safely, thankfully. It then sat for a couple of years mouldering without a new tarp on the roof. The water damage was so extensive that the ground floor hardwood floors were rotted out in spots. Finally about 5 years ago, Doherty lost the house, I believe due to unpaid taxes, and was finally put up for sale and rehabilitated. This guy never took care of either of his buildings, maybe he got in over his head, but he refused offers to buy the Cedar St. property numerous times. Here is a link to a photo of the Cedar Sy property before rehabilitation; The writer of this article should have split this into two different stories. Past corruption in the building dept. had nothing to do with the Doherty situation.

Re: “Monday Must Reads: Richmond Cop Fatally Shoots Suspect; Six Californias Measure Fails to Get Enough Signatures

This is important local news!

I think probably the number of bear "incidents" in Yosemite has dropped because of the effective policies and hard work of government right here in Oakland. That's where their efforts have gone. Maybe they can focus them a little more close to town.

Also the sale of the "local" papers is no doubt due to their focus only on the bad things that happen around here, so that nobody reads them except maybe them damn Yosemite bears.

Re: “Pot Farm Showcases Radical Water Conservation Invention

Drip irrigation is second, only to letting the hose run unchecked, in water wasting methods. Mr. Monroe's statement about drip systems is a very common mistake. Even water board management and staff have only been able to come up with water saving methods like, "don't flush the toilet" or "use a hose shut off valve".

Re: “Artist Creates Free Store, Art Gallery, and Studio in Oakland

I want to repost a comment left by someone on a Facebook post regarding this article. They put it so well. I couldn't say it better. I hope they don't mind.
"This is problematic because it clearly makes distinctions between "poor" aka "those that need" and "rich" aka "those that give. It frames her in such a way that it becomes another "white savior narrative." It's a good idea but location and situation create a different set of politics around it. The way the article frames it also doesn't help the case.
More than anything it's a division of status and class. Yesterday some art student said "I like working in grungy, filthy areas of society, so I don't mind working in low-income society spaces." This only reinforces this idea of the patting themselves on the back and breaking ground on new ideas that have long existed and been in places.
Another question that arises is "social practice," what is it? And how is the narrative being framed and shaped by institutions and the media? Why write about her and not all the projects that come out of east side arts? Their work is as much valid in social practice as hers. Those of us in the field have to be very careful in how we use that term and frame our projects- and also be vocal. It's a new term being thrown around to label any art in the world that's outside institutions. And don't even get me started on institutions and what they say about things as such..."

East Bay Express told me they don't write these kind of articles, when we were doing something similar at Moco in downtown Oakland two years ago. I think we were too ethnic for your paper maybe.

Re: “When Liberals Take Control of Police

On September 14th, a Richmond police officer shot and killed a man who attacked the officer, who was on a normal patrol at a liquor store. This is the first officer-involved shooting of this kind since 2007, but testimony to the fact that attacking any police officer is not conducive to one's health, even in a police force the author of this article claims has been taken control of by liberals.

Re: “The Trouble with Kaiser's Technology

I must say I agree with it all KP MUST, HAVE TO DO BETTER! recently I had surgery, post operatively, I could not empty my bladder. 1st nurse who was going off shift scanned my bladder said I had 400cc of urine. I needed an in and out cath. I heard him tell on 2nd nurse..2nd nurse said she'd do it. He said he can do it, she replies "I got it" he leaves. While I could not Pee, no matter how many times I said I had to pee; she stayed in the computer. My husband and cousin, who were at the bedside said she kept scrolling up and down the computer. Now after reading Wootens comment I understand what she was doing. She was completing the spreadsheetn looking for what best fitted my situaion. Final outcome: by the time she cath me there was a total of 700cc of urine & probably 45 minutes later. (I cant be sure of the time frame - as it's recovery time. I know factually it was a long time). I did not report it as I didnt want to get anyone in trouble. Im thinking I will now seeing its a technology problem. A model of care that does not work or not as effective as they, KP, intended it to be.PRIORITY IS THE PATIENTS NOT THE COMPUTERS NOT THE BROKEN TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS! Keep the patients safe keep the nurses safe keep us all safe. #power to the nurses!!!

Magnus also brought the civil side of crime reduction strategies into the police dept. Code enforcement is the tool of an effective broken windows program.
