Re: “Dieting for Drought

I'm not sold on the use of ground water. I think we are taking from the future, to have something now. Ground water is like money in the bank, we may need it for a rainy day. No pun intended. Look I know almonds are profitable. I also know we have over thirteen million in the Stanislaus county . Can we sustain that type of water use? We are irrigating like there's no tomorrow and sadly if we keep it up there won't be.
I am sold on cutting back, and not just food. It takes over 1800 gallons of water to make a pair of jeans. 400 to make a t-shirt and 39,090 to make a car. If we make our clothes last a little longer and our car run a bit further we all benefit.

Re: “Where Vegans and Meat-Eaters Happily Coexist

Michele, what don't you look down on? People want to earn a living making food for people and people want to pay for food to be made for them, let it be.

Anywho, great useful article!

Re: “A Guide to Eating Alone

The bar at Lalimes is great for dining alone. You can read a book or engage with other "bar people".

Re: “Where Vegans and Meat-Eaters Happily Coexist

"where can meat-lovers, cheese-loving vegetarians, and vegans peacefully coexist? It can be challenging"

At home. Most families have members who have different styles of eating. Wife is a vegetarian; husband a carnivore; one kid a vegan; one kid eats only cereal.

People do cook and eat at home. It's fun. It's sharing. It's eco-friendly. It's tolerant of diversity. It's cheap. It saves time.

Re: “Hot, Hot Heat

I picked up one of these bottles from Beauty's Bagels and it's worth it. I think it might replace my Sriracha habit.

Re: “A Guide to Eating Alone

For eating alone, I also recommend Grand Lake Kitchen, 576 Grand Ave, Oakland, as well as B-Dama, 4301 Piedmont Ave, and Portal, 1611 2nd Ave, Oakland, CA.

Re: “Hot, Hot Heat

Great article! Thanks for taking the time to interview me for it - a couple of minor corrections: none of my flavors are discontinued, and my '89 Dodge is a full sized bad mamma jamma!
:D

Scott Zalkind
Lucky Dog Hot Sauce

Ps - Fikaris FTW with "volcano with babies shooting out of it on fire" - hahaha - that might be my next label.

Re: “Q: Where's a Good Pub Quiz in the East Bay?

Hi Ellen,

Great article! I've been looking for some good local trivia nights. Have you heard of this group called Pub Trivia Nerds? http://www.pubtrivianerds.com/

I was also wondering if you knew of any pub trivia forums locally where i could perhaps connect with teams? Have a great day.

thank you,
Chris

Re: “Staircases to Heaven

Charles Fleming, the author of Secret Stairs: East Bay originally got into walking stairs in LA because of health problems. Also I wanted to point out that Oakland Urban Paths (http://www.oaklandurbanpaths.org/) does walks on the stairways and pathways around Oakland every 2nd Saturday. Some OUP folks test-walked routes for Fleming's book.

(thanks to Zaineb for helping me de-confuse myself on my EBX accounts)

Re: “A Party for the Ages

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Julian's stories thus far, but this one is something special. I have a want to be initiated the same way he did -- but I almost don't need to because it was described so well. Keep going man, love your stuff.

Re: “A Party for the Ages

I became a volunteer before ever attending the solstice party after hearing about it. I had a great time helping, and seeing all those people having a good time made me happy that I was a part of it.

Re: “Vegetable Gardening for Dummies

That’s a great post about growing veggies. I am a gardener and organic produce consumer in San Jose. We are inviting gardeners in the Bay Area to use Local Carrot to list produce that they will be growing this year. We think it’s a really cool, useful, and revolutionary app that is good for your health, strengthens the community, and helps save the environment. Would you try it with your friends and tell us what you think about it? More info is at http://www.LocalCarrot.com.

Thank you so much,
Michael Still
