Very nice playing. Always an ABB fan and sorely miss Duane.
@Lawngun- Great guitarist, great performance! Thanks for posting...will definitely check out more of Tommy. BTW you might like this vid of Luvplanet's Mark McGee playing sweet slide and solos as Gregg Allman's guitarist on "Melissa". Best part kicks in around 4:10. Enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-C7PsXI7a4
@Lawngun - very nice, thank you for sharing. I appreciate good music and I admire many great guitarists and musicians....and this is why I dig Luvplanet so much. Research and reconsider. Peace
Aw, Mariska. If you want to hear a GUITARIST, Tommy Emmanuel is THE MAN. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIWSVTaytOw…
I have read the CD Lovolution review along with the comments of fans/readers/columnist and it is interesting how low some of the comments are. It seems to me that the columnist was an inspiring musician that may have some resentment toward any band who creates original music. Luvplanet is a very high energy talented band who combines folk/rock/alternative/country/ and blurs all lines in trying to define what type of music they create. There sound has influences from 70's Rock but they also pull from there eclectic music interests that span country, classic, jazz, blues, pop. I have seen a hand-full of live performances and the energy that live performance bring cannot be heard on a CD. I enjoy the CD very much.
To those people who are open, you will feel the magical quality Luvplanet brings to there music.
It seems that most of the reviews written for this segment have a negative undertone. I am wondering if it might be time to bring someone else into the mix who may have more constructive criticism.
Dude, I love how everybody is getting so worked up about a review in "local licks". Grow a thicker skin, get a better name and suck it up.
Stop having your aunts and uncles come in and defend you on an internet message board!
With hundreds of bands in the bay area that play the same old cover band music, it's nice to go and see a band that performs their own music!!! I have seen Luvplanet perform many times and go as often as I can. Nicole Sutton does not have a twangy voice, I don't know what this critic is thinking, and as for "SKRONKING"????? I have no clue what that means but I must agree with with the other review about Mark McGee being one of the greatest guitar players out there. I think the critic of this article should do a little more research first. And as for Luvplanet being a "dumb name", I think that was a pretty childish remark in itself.
luvplanet is a really dumb name for a band, unless the band members are like children, or are clients of Creative Growth. I commend Rachel for actually giving them a chance.
Thanks, Lawngun. You just made my day:)
@Lawngun - I don't agree with you at all. Garage band? No way! You need to listen to more of their music. These are incredible musicians - Mark McGee is a very well known and respected guitarist in the U.S., Europe, Japan, etc. Take a look at this live video of "The Stone" from the current Luvolution CD: http://youtu.be/bZIOxq9nM-Q and an official pro video from their previous album Lucky One: http://youtu.be/0RaMOaXVkXg
Thanks for posting a link, Composer K, so I could hear what all the excitement and venom was about. Sorry, fanboys and girls. Gotta side with Rachel on this. Sound like a mediocre garage band to me, but each his, her or its own.
Dear Rachel, I am writing to express how very disappointed I am with your review of Luvplanet.
I consider myself a fairly savvy music listener and I appreciate diversity, originality and high level musicianship in the music and artists I choose to listen to. When you add a great emotional connection it's a done deal for me...I am a fan. I discovered Luvplanet recently and I have become a great admirer of their music. It is unique...it is uplifting...it is extremely well crafted.....it is rock....it is melodic...it is so many wonderful things. Therefore, I truly can't comprehend how you could have listened to the recent Luvplanet CD and how you were able to write some the statements that appeared in your "critique". To me, it sounds like you did not put any effort into your review, perhaps you did not listen to the whole CD or even some of it. Please listen to their CD again and please come to a Luvplanet show and watch them perform live. You will LUV it - I'll even buy your ticket. :)
After reading your review it's obvious to me as to what transpired. You may have been listening to "Luvolution" but you certainly didnt' actually hear Luvplanet's music. Those of us who can "hear" Luvplanet find ourselves truly blessed to be able to comprehend their incredible lyrics and song writing skills. This band is awesome. Luvplanet is the best original rock band in the bay area. Stevie B
Rachel Swan, Who are you? I'm sorry the day you lisened to Luvalution was not a aesthetic day for you. Seems like you are full of plaitude days. Variation in music is known to people who can hear them. Nicole's voice is her own unique sound and goes very well with Mark's ( Skronking? , what ever that means it is not in the English dictionary.) Gutiar. You may want to get a better sound system to lisen to the CD's you are judging. You will hear how great Scott & Tommy are. Only then, you will know how fantastic the band Luvplanet truly is.
Wow, you sure have the Luvplanet review all wrong. What a inspiring, talented local act they are. Is it safe to assume that you didn't listen to the entire CD? Amazing how you can take something so good, write just a paragraph and completely not capture the essence of the band at all. Go see them live, then listen to the entire CD. Only then may you be able to comment accurately. This review is all wrong....
It truly seems odd to have someone review local music when that person is so obviously tunnel-visioned and intent on dismissing anything she doesn't like. It's critics such as this that have us true music lovers scratching our heads. Did she actually listen to Luvolution at all? As a music fan of many genre's, I have to say that Luvplanet are simply the most creative and musically sincere bands the bay area has seen in a long time. I remember the first time I heard Luvplanet and how it brought me back to that moment when I first discovered music. Their music made me want to know more; hear more. Spin the disc, see them live. You'll be glad you did!
Luvplanet is one of the most original, talented, and (as you so perfectly illustrated in your review) underrated bands playing in the Bay Area today. They are the true heirs to the lost thread of San Francisco sound pioneered by the Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead and later evolved by local bands like (shriek!) Journey (and like The Dead their studio recordings do not provide a complete picture of the magic woven in the segue jams that spontaneously occur between songs). Luvplanet integrates diverse influences from the 1960s onward into something new with a positive vibe and must-be-seen-live-to-be-fully-appreciated energy. Based on your assessment of the lyrics and the riffs I can't believe that you actually listened to the CD all the way through. Re: banishing Nicole to the folk realm, do you have a problem with strong women who rock because that is exactly what Nicole does on stage without a twang in sight (see "Virtual Life" from their last S.F. show at The Showroom- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBby50mNKF8). Thanks for reviewing Luvplanet but please check them out live or give the CD another spin.
WOW, You are really misinterpreting Luvplanet there Rachel. This band is true to themselves playing euphonious music from the heart to ours ear and heart. The music is their motivation as well as their message of goodness. This band spreads good energy and if you give them a chance by listening with repitition, you will find it is uplifting music. I myself have been playing it in my shuttlebus in NYC for College kids and they ALL have grown to like it a lot. Luvplanet is a jewell in the rough. They will grow in popularity with or without your approval.
I don't know about that CD review, but LuvPlanet is the shit live. Very, very legit. Friendly people, positive music, and they get everybody dancing. I was so impressed when I saw them- people of all ages were having a lot of fun.
