Re: “An Amusing East Bay History

A friend of mine who died last year in her nineties, used to get dragged to Idora Park by her parents. She claims it was a really boring place for kids and an excuse for their parents to schmooze (and I assume booze).

She much preferred the Fox.

Question: is the windmill next door to Steele's on Telegraph a remnant of Idora? Was the miniature golf range that closed about 20 years ago on Telegraph a vestige?

Re: “A Question of Devotion

It doesn't get mentioned in this article, but Laura decided to put her career on hold to be the stay-at-home parent for Simon. Through her tireless dedication and hard work, she has been 90% responsible for getting him to this stable, relatively healthy place he his today. To learn more about the Fitch-Jenett family and their struggles raising a child with a life-threatening illness, go to www.simonlev.blogspot.com

Re: “The Tour de Coop

I work for Animal Place, a nonprofit sanctuary specializing in the rescue of abused farmed animals, including chickens. We operate Rescue Ranch that saves the lives of thousands of hens from the egg industry each year. We have two facilities - Vacaville and Grass Valley.

We currently have more than 1,600 hens available for adoption who were saved from starvation by a California egg farmer. Those interested in adoption can find out more here: http://animalplace.org/adoptable_birds.htm….

I think it is important to remember that the backyard chicken movement has a dark side to it.

Rooster Chicks: Male chicks are killed or used as "packing peanuts" by the hatcheries supplying backyard chicks.

Parent Birds: They are housed inside sheds. They never see the light of day. At the young age of 18-mos-old, they are slaughtered.

Transport: Day-old chicks are shipped through the postal service with no legal oversight and often in any climate conditions, resulting in the unnecessary death of sensitive baby animals (who are never raised by their own mothers, either).

Chickens are intelligent, social animals. They can be wonderful backyard companions. Adopt, don't buy.

Re: “Napoleon's Epic Premiere

For those who arrange weekend marathons to watch all of Star Wars, the Godfather, Dexter, or The Wire, five and half hours is nothing. The fifteen-hour production (over four nights) of Wagner's Ring Cycle was an unforgettable event in my life. Some things can be so worth the time, so there's no way I'm missing Gance's Napoleon! Thanks for the alert, Ms. Harwood!

Re: “Small Dogs, Lofty Dreams

About as classy as midget wrestling. The Dachshund Club of America (DCA) sez:

DCA continues to maintain that racing is bad for the breed by encouraging the breeding of dogs for that purpose rather than as examples of the breed standard recognized by the American Kennel Club. Racing also encourages the misuse of dogs not suited for this activity: Dachshunds are not designed to be a racing breed, but rather to go underground.

Re: “Saved by the SPCA

Hopalong is great. One of the more reputable animal rescue organizations around.

Re: “Countdown to Goodbye

I'm really going to miss going into space. I don't mean I really went into space, unless you count inner space. I don't. Count it, I mean. It's pretty crowded compared to outer space and you don't get to wear a cool, white suit. Well, you could wear a cool, white suit, but you'd have to hang out a chi-chi resort, which, as I understand, is pretty much unlike outer space.

On second thought, the food at a resort probably beats sucking lunch out of a tube and chasing it down with Tang. And then, there's the bar where you can pay with little plastic beads. Maybe, I just need to go to a resort and forget about this whole space exploration thing.
